i'm thinking of picking it up and playing it when i get eve-burnt(a fairly common occurance) and from what i can tell, the biggest gripe with it so far seems to be it's pace and its community, can anyone confirm/deny these things? i can deal with a slow pace(i do play eve after all) butif the community's rally ****e i ca't deal with that.

okies, thx for the headsup, now then
Shadowbane? oldish but seems okay, lots of room for customising apparently, plus nation-building, PvP for a Purpose(a major Eve-draw for me that has fallen somewhat short) Ryzom? new, looks like a really in-depth world, with full-on MIGRATING mobs, critters that actually hunt in packs, work together etc... PLUS skill-based system apparently(downloading trial so i'll let y'all know about that) unique races.
it's weird, MMORPGs.com has givinen LOTRO an 8.4... but everyone who plays it seems to HATE the pace and community normally there's not that split...

Edited by: Aeryn Davenport on 15/05/2007 23:10:51 Edited by: Aeryn Davenport on 15/05/2007 23:10:18 I've played it and think its an awesome game. There's no "l3gol4s" because they have a very strict naming filter. Some people whine about that I guess because some legitimate names aren't allowed because they are not "tolkien" enough, but I don't think its that big of a deal. I think it really improves the experience too. In general, everyone seems very friendly and nice and Turbine is very committed to making sure the experience is positive. It would probably be a good idea to find a group you can regularly quest with, or join a kinship. Turbine has also built in a lot of protections to prevent the griefing/exploiting that were common problems in WoW.
Every fantasy MMO post-WoW can be called a WoW clone, whereas WoW is just an Everquest clone. Calling it a WoW clone doesn't mean anything in regards to how good it is. Its not revolutionary like EVE if that's what you are interested in. EVE players are generally elitists anyways, so I have seen a lot of hostile comments about LOTRO. Obviously its nothing like EVE, its like comparing FIFA and Gears of War. Completely different genres.
I play in a gaming portal and we have quite a few members playing it who love it. If you look at the reviews around they are almost universally positive. I don't actually have an active account at the moment but I am seriously considering going back so that I can play something a little less nerve racking then EVE when I want to relax.
I would play it over WoW any day of the week. One reason is that the graphics are rendered much more realistically and they look gorgeous. You can actually look out over the countryside and be amazed by it. When you travel through the countryside you really have a feel of trekking through Middle-Earth. It really feels like a huge world and they've barely unlocked a fifth of Middle-Earth so far. I think they did a great job of making things look like you'd imagine they'd look like in the Tolkien books.
Another reason is that the quests are very immersive and very well done. You really get sucked into them and don't feel like its just a quest grind. When you do major storyline quests they are very engaging, and its a lot of fun getting into groups and adventuring together. You also feel like you are really exploring because the quests will send you to a huge range of different locales that are very different from each other.
Its definitely an infinitely more laidback game then EVE. Its more akin a traditional RPG then most games that claim that title. The PvP seemed pretty lacking to me, but I did not really care because the real focus was on questing and I loved it. It might be a little too warm and fuzzy for some people in regards to the fact that you aren't trying to destroy other players, but the content itself doesn't pull any punches. So if it sounds like something you'd like definitely check it out.

Actually i believe it has this. Every now and then you get a quest or something to play a high level evil guy...heard it somewhere...not sure.

When you reach lvl 10 you can create a monster character (spider/warg/orc/uruk hai, etc), you can have a character for each class. You can play them any time you want, they have their own missions to do, so you can build them up a bit, even though they are level 50 forever.
When the good guy players reach a certain level (i think) they can enter the area the monsters live and pvp to their little hearts content. There are castles to take over (so territory control) and other stuff to bash.
Generally its quite fun, and a nice change of pace to eve, and after you've blocked a few muppets the community is pretty good.

I read (on the LOTRO site) that their aim is a fully player-driven economy, which is pretty cool.
On the other side, it's badly sharded, and there are almost 10 shards in Europe already, divided by Language. Which sucks.
Anyone know if the PvP is instanced like POTBS? Any dynamic elements to the game (Player build structures/huts etc.) [and no ****e like DAOC separate zone for housing does not count]

Pvp is set in one region of the map (another to be introduced in an update soon), this region has a number of castles protected by (at the moment) npc's.
These castles would ordinarily be also protected by players (still waiting on the good guys levelling up on the server im on).
To take over the castle for your faction you need to defeat the high level npc's, it is also a persistant area, no instances.
So, lots of to-ing and fro-ing. Thing i havent found out yet is if it will get reset to normal status at any time, say end of the month, but it would seem sensible.
Last time i was playing, a group of about 15-25 monster players barged into the main central castles, and much fun was had thumping the good guys, and getting thumped by them.

Check out this thread on Scrapheap Challenge. LOTRO is getting a lot of love. And Calmodown a lot of stick (of course...).
