Memory's hazy but IIRC it was claimed somehere that 200 isk is enought to afford a family upkeep on most planets for the rest of their lives. Which is the main draw of shipcrews, even though it is a dangerous job. However, if that is true, it begs the question why don't capsuleers crash planetary economies just for laughs.
Actually now that I think about it, wasn't there a chronicle about a space station bartender that became super rich from the tips left by drunk capsuleers. I have no idea what the chronicle is called though. Might've even been one of those fluff news stories when we still regularly got them. |

I think the comparison was more along the lines of the cost of a shuttle was roughly equivalent to a blue collar worker's yearly pay planetside. |

The forums now have a solid search function. If there seems to be a chance that the topic you're about to open may have been discussed before, it might be enlightening to try a few searches. Amarrad - Amarr language project |

Comparing Steel = Tritanium, I came up with 1 ISK = 8.5 USD Comparing a PI warehouse to a 130000 (i.e. probably 5000m3) square foot warehouse, 1 ISK = $3.5 Daemeon Fyral did the numbers for Dairy products and came up with 1 ISK = 5.57 USD Comparing RL Cattle to EVE PI live stock, EVE "Carbon" to real world charcoal by the ton are also well under $10 USD per ISK
Of course manufacturing processes are different in the EVE universe. Most space worthy ships are assembled from raw materials within a few hours, with manufacturing being a fraction of the cost. Meanwhile in the real world, the cost of the original minerals is a fraction of the cost of production any advanced craft. Super sci-fy nanites undoubtedly have a role to play in that. Thus Tech 1 items cost far less than their real world counter parts.
I vote 1 ISK = $10 USD |

From http://www.eveonline.com/mb2/news.asp?nid=2340
"To put this in perspective, an average family living on a planet might, in the course of a lifetime, accrue savings of about 10,000 isk."
Assuming that EVE is on average a bit poorer than RL earth, you can actually go for 1 ISK = 1-10 EUR/USD, which should be plenty an estimate for most purposes :-) |

I vote 1 ISK = $10 USD Steel is a blend of iron and carbon, two elements you can literally trip over on Earth because we have so much of it. Carbon is effectively inert, and iron is only marginally volatile. Tritanium is found only in space, is extremely volatile, and therefore has to be worked under very specific circumstances. It is not an apt comparison.
A real-world warehouse is four walls and a roof with a bunch of shelves. A PI warehouse is a high-tech, probably largely automated storage facility that can link to a perfectly optimized global infrastructure on worlds as diverse as Mercury and Jupiter. It is not an apt comparison.
All PI material costs are determined by player market forces which don't really take the cluster's demand for beef into account, so it's difficult to compare Livestock to cattle. It's difficult to estimate the costs that go into maintenance of internet spacecattle and production of milk, but whenever something needs to be transported by capsuleers I get the feeling that it usually goes from mundane to near-luxury. Its not exact but...
~$15 (USD) = 1 PLEX
1 PLEX = ~450M Isk (eve-central)
so... $1 USD = 30M ISK
1 ISK = $0.000000033 USD ...Can't. Tell. If ...Troll? Or Serious.... |

The official answer, should there be one, should probably be put in EVElopedia. The only entry there now is an acronym dictionary. The Pod Goo Podcast http://www.podgoo.com
