Edited by: Antithysis on 23/05/2007 02:38:00 Edited by: Antithysis on 23/05/2007 02:26:16 I've been using Konfabulator since it first came out, which for those of you who don't know about allows the use of widgets like in Apple's Dashboard for OSX.
I saw this widget and thought it looked really good, but I'm always sketchy about giving account details out. Does anyone know if it is valid or not?
Widget: http://www.neoscrib.com/index.php?page=project&id=37067900
Thanks in advance for any help.

Edited by: Ceraphin on 23/05/2007 04:52:05 I'm the author of the Widget and it is valid (I wouldn't post under my character name if it weren't). I'm in the process of writing a (semi) technical paper about the specifics of the security measures taken.
To keep it short, sweet, and to the point, the Widget stores the password locally and encrypted in the Windows registry under "HKCU\Software\Yahoo\WidgetEngine\Widgets\EVE Online Skill Monitor". When the Widget logs in to the EVE servers, it is on a secure connection (https) using TLS and so everything is completely encrypted. Other than that your password goes no where else.
In the paper I'm writing I'm going to include an ethereal capture. For those of you who don't know what ethereal is, it's a very well known popular network analyzer. You can capture the network traffic yourself while the Widget is running by using Ethereal or the more correct version known as Wireshark. You can get Wireshark from http://www.wireshark.org and Ethereal from http://www.ethereal.com
And finally, you can download the Widget from http://www.neoscrib.com.
Thanks, Ceraphin

Pretty cool.
Does running this stuff use up much of my PC's resources? I like stuff like this, but I always end up removing it to increase performance...

Ditto. Stuff like Yahoo Widgets and Google Desktop look cool but ultimately they just eat up RAM.

Great widget, but i don't seem to get it to work properly. It reports server status but otherwise only says 'loading'...
It's not my software firewall (tried turning that off to no effect). I am behind a router - any specific settings needed there?
I have a number of yahoo's (formerly konfabulator) widgets on my desktop and the information they provide (HDD, CPU, memory and web traffic for instance) far outways the few MB's of memory they use or the 3 or so percent CPU on updates (using a lighter shell than explorer makes that a moot point for me anyways). And no i have no uber PC.

In versions below 1.0.8 you just have to reload the Widget to get it to show the info (assuming you're connected to the internet when you load it). It will be fixed in version 1.0.8.

On my computer it only takes up about 7.5 MB. If this is a problem then you should seriously consider upgrading your computer... (I know, power user, blah blah blah... 8 MB isn't that much). While it's idle (which is most of the time) it doesn't take up any CPU either.

I think i found the problem, the new one was installed next to the old version rather than overwriting it and somehow didn't get any context menu items even though the old version was not running... idunno - it works now.
New problem though - it shows the info and picture for an alt with this char's name and i cannot choose who the thing shows ---sig--- Yes I just won the thread. Everyone can now start bowing down to me in an orderly fashion... SIG pic |

Edited by: John McDuff on 26/05/2007 17:11:26 Here i made some screenies from how it does now:
Now for one the charname and race run off the background. But the larger problem is that the stats and picture displayed are from an alt, named Vak'ran, while the charname is from my main. The context menu does not display the alts name, just the main.
If you're still working on this it'd be great if you can fix it - since this would be one of the most useful widegets around! ---sig--- Yes I just won the thread. Everyone can now start bowing down to me in an orderly fashion... SIG pic |

I tried this widget, version 1.0.9, at first it worked fine, but now it endlessly shows "Loading"...no firewall, etc.
Any ideas? |
