I'm not playing this game for long yet but when I played World of Warcraft it meant "Away from keyboard". It probably means the same here.

This term is primarily used to apply to flying from one place to another on autopilot while you are off doing other stuff, AFK. -=^=-

"Away from keyboard" is probably the best definition, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was originally "afn"-- away for now-- and somewhere along the line it got changed to "afk" because people can't spell. The same thing happened in Counterstrike with the arctic warfare magnum: it was originally abbreviated as the "awm," and somehow "awm" morphed into "awp."

It is not a recommended mode of play, BTW. (By The Way)

AFK mode is often used in conjunction with the autopilot, so you can warp between systems while doing other things. However, if your route preferences are set to include systems with security less than 0.5, then you can simply replace AFK with DOA.

AFK mode is routinely tossed in the face of freighter pilots who load up 1M km/3 of goods then set some destination like 30 jumps, then go off and do stuff like build a house or something, then come back, dock, and sell all the goods for some ungodly profit. -=^=-

AFK - While it technically means "Away From Keyboard"......I also refer to it as "Available For (easy) Kill".
It can be done, but isn't recommended.....I occasionally do it in hi-sec, but NEVER in low- or no-sec. You'll likely come back to find yourself either in your pod, or more likely waking up in a clone vat.

No, dip, it was always AFK. It originated in Telnet when people got up from their keyboard. The Arctic Warfare Magnum, the AWM as you put it, is actually a real gun manufactured by Accuracy International, and there is a variation called the AWP (Arctic Warfare Magnum, and the Arctic Warfare Police). In version 1.0 the developers mislabeled the gun and the name stuck. I am not sure but I think in Source they actually changed the gun to be a simulation of the actual AWP, and not the AWM.

It means that whoever said that is probably running missions.
I jest, in case that much wasn't obvious.

I was wondering about this when I read the OP. Thanks for the information. I first ran into it in EQ where they had a command you could turn on that echoed "away from keyboard" if someone sent you a tell. I didn't expect it originated there though and was wondering about its true origin.

Believe it or not, awp sounds better than "awm"(sounds like 'um') on vent, and 2) its faster to type. 3) "always win pwning" :)
