I recently purchased an air conditioner and plugged it in across the room from my computer. I noticed that as soon as I turned it on my computer crashed and booting up produced a windows startup error. The air conditioner is NOT plugged into my computer power bar.
Is it possible that I am drawing too much power with the air conditioner and the computer is underpowered? Or does the computer only use a small amount of power? Is there anything I can download to measure whether or not my PSU is getting enough power?

It's possible if they're both plugged into the same room. Try plugging the a/c into a different room and see if it happens.

A computer these days easily uses 300W, especially a gaming setup with CPU and GPU under stress. If you have a large number of drives or a serious high end setup 500W is not strange. If the power group your room is on cannot handle another 1000W or something which an AC can get up to the AC will just be a bit less efficient, though your computer will reboot and stick due to a lack of current (= easiest explanation power over time). Do you experience fuse burnouts a lot? If so they may be a bit low on amperage, trying stronger ones however might not be a good idea if the room's wiring is old (risking fire!). If its not your thing - ask an electrician. ---sig--- Yes I just won the thread. Everyone can now start bowing down to me in an orderly fashion... SIG pic |

Well I'd assume they're on the same circuit and the AC is causing a brief dip in power when you turn it on (like how some appliances dim the lights in the room for a moment when you turn them on). If the power to the computer gets interrupted for a split second it'll crash. If you run the AC on a different circuit it should be fine, just trip the fuse for the computer room and find the closest outlet that still works, plug the AC in there.

Thanks for the replies guys. I moved the AC into the bedroom (1 bd rm apt) and everything seems fine now. It must be on a separate circuit.
