Why does EVE calculate distance in AU? The denizens on this side of the EVE gate don't know the distance from earth to the sun. They haven't been to that solar system in millenia. Did they find some old documents? Have they just passed this down generation to generation? Did all races use this, or did one race claim it as standard once everyone met up in space?

It's probably the same situation as their timing system.

It's a little-known fact that the AU in EVE was originally based on the distance between Gallente Prime and its star, rather than between Earth and Sol, as the Gallente were the leading intellectual, scientific, and exploratory pioneers of the time.
However, the Caldari government complained that this was an unacceptable display of interstellar bias toward the Gallente (at that point in history the Caldari had a raging inferiority complex), so it was agreed to change it to the archaic but neutral terran AU.

Edited by: Sheriff Jones on 02/06/2007 16:43:29 AU, comes from the words Amarr Utopia as this distance was told in the ancient scrolls as the distance between Amarrians living on Amarr Prime and the holy land where people went after a glorious death, and also the god who looked over them. It has over the times lost it's meaning, and scientists have claimed it to have a more spesific, galactical meaning, but Religious reclaimers, as myself, know better.

For the same reason things are written in english, the metric system is used, and they use standard terms like "railguns" and "shields".
To make it easier for you to comprehend. It would be the reason why most sci-fi movies have english spoken in them except when making a point htat someone is speaking an unusual language. At least the good sci-fi movies. People go to theatres and games for stories, not to get a made up language thrown at them apocalypto style.

Oh Sheriff I should report you to the Emperor and have him make you re-read the Pax for the next yarrr.
"God lives on Amarr Prime but holds a palace for our honoured dead in the holy land 1 AU from Amarr Prime. God will only be 1AU away at most but still watches over our shoulder and guides our hand."
BTW, anyone who asks, a Yarrr is the time it takes for the universe to revolve around God's holy palace. Pirates are those who have been converted and call this repeatedly to ask if their Yarrr of pennance is over.

Originally by: EVE prime fiction EVE takes place in a cluster of stars far from mankindĘs original habitat, planet Earth. How far away, and whether or not that cradle of civilization still exists, is a mystery. Humans arrived through a natural wormhole and, gazing up upon an alien sky they had never seen, were completely unable to determine where this new world was located. From the New Eden solar system, where the gate of EVE once led to the old world, humans expanded in all directions at a furious pace, exploring and colonizing rapidly.

So there you have it. The spacial unit was AU before we moved to New Eden. --
