I want each contender to create their interpitation of a pirate flag, privateer flag from 1600-1700th. This may sound easy but...
Starts Today, Ends one week from now. The flags shall be sent to [email protected] and they shall be posted here.
1st: 500m 2nd: 200m 3rd: 50m
A simple idea could be to take the Gurista Bunny to place on a black flag...
Rules: 2D, No rippling Could your pattern have been constructed back in 16-1700? Is the content of your flag appropriate to 16-1700? Is the visual style consistent with the artistry of 16-1700?
No sawtooth edges, and i want Weathering (The flag should look used)
When saving a flag file for submission, it must be a 128 pixel x 85 pixel .png file.
Once you enter this competition your submissions belong to me, i can do whatever i want with em whenever i want.

Quick info: 1. The skull is a rabbits one (Guristas in the 1600s... :P) 2. The hour-glass means "Your time is short" (as you fans of history already know) 3. The heart and drops of blood means "We take no prisoners" (again, history) 4. I couldnt think of a good way to make a black and mostly white flag look 'old' so I went ahead and made all the objets look overly hand-made as the shapes have been blurred out a bit by age.

Someones intending on using these flags for Potbs I assume. If that is the case, you might want to add to your post that the colors especially need to be within the time period. For example, don't use a bright white, use a softer more washed out look, almost vanilla in color. Same goes with black, don't use flat black, use more of a Grey hue. Just keep the colors soft or your flag wont get approved for Potbs

I thought these rules confirmed that:) Could your pattern have been constructed back in 16-1700? Is the content of your flag appropriate to 16-1700? Is the visual style consistent with the artistry of 16-1700?

EDIT: Tried to age it: 1. Foggy/highlited
2. This one has been washed by one too many washers through the years :P
This is art, when someone thinks outside of the box. First, they didnt have this sharp dye in that time so to make something look something like that in that time, use a brighter black or dark dark grey tone, and same with the white and red.
There are examples amongst the other compedators for weathering.

Edited by: Gojyu on 06/06/2007 09:01:12 My first entry (got a few more ideas, but not the time tonight)
"Death for crown or coin" :)
The skull with hourglass is a standard pirate image. The crown identifies them as a privateer, but the coin at equal height on the flag shows that they place their loyalties to anything that gets them money equal to their employer

I would like to suggest to not use as bright white. But otherwise good thinking and nice design.

Alright, I'll bite.
I decided to use the two most classic pirate flags I could find and mix them with an eve influence. I went for the blood raider skull rather than the guristas skull because I felt it worked better on a flag. I tried to keep it simple, as if done with white on black, but made it look aged and worn according to your specifications. Half of them are black on white, the other half black on white with some painted blood. I decided that it was perfectly legitimate for the period to use red ink as some pirate flags seem to have red on them and there is nothing stopping them using actual blood. you can claim it's the blood of your victims :).
Standard skull and crossed bones. Aged and slightly weathered.
Standard skull and crossed swords. Aged and slightly weathered.
Bloody skull and crossed bones. Aged and very worn.
Bloody skull and crossed bones. Aged and very worn with a fold mark. That's not a ripple or three dimensional effect, it's a mark where the flag has worn due to repeated folding, perhaps around a flagpole? I included this variation in case you preferred it over the one before.
Bloody skull and crossed swords. Aged and worn.
E-mailing a copy of each to you now. Let me know what you think. If you like the style and have specific requests for emblems that you want mixed in or other flag compositions, I can do that.
EDIT: There we go. Let's see them now.

I like the idea, but i would like to see a darker grey tone in it, almost look like you poored bleach on it and ran it in a washer:) Otherwise great work

That's kind of what I was going for, since you said weathered and worn. I have some bad glare on my monitor right now, though, so I didn't realise they were so bright. Here they are without that applied at all:
Would you like somewhere in between the old set and the new set or is this sufficient?
EDIT: Here they are with some light wearing on them:

Okay, here we go with some more ageing. I dropped the relativelt high-quality of the skull and went instead with the one more washed-out and way easier to do with thread and needle :P
1. Faded the black to a more grey and added some discoloration to it (various highlites). Also made the white more 'vanilla'. This is my personal favorite, since the hourglass is a bit askew and the blood is bright-red, which imo gives it a dark/twisted feature :)
2. Cropped up the hourglass a bit
3. Hourglass and faded the red

Something in between would be awsome, An RGB color around 50, 40, 30 works spectacularly for black, and 235, 230, 220 works beautifully for white.
This is somewhat black for that age: link

I updated the second set since they were still too bright. You might have to refresh them a few times. how do they look now?
