As in I'm totally locked out of using my computer for ten to fifteen seconds while the Eve client finds the picture it needs. This happens when I lock a target, look in my hangar, click on something so it shows up on the overview, etc... Only happens the first time it loads the picture.
Clearing my cache seems to help somewhat, but is imperfect and the problem returns so quickly that simply clearing the cache isn't enough to solve the problem. Add that to the fact that clearing the cache means EVERY picture has this problem...
Any ideas? It hasn't always been like this, but it's been going on long enough for me to not have a clue when it began. And it's really hard when trying to blow up people I've never met before.

the loading is normal, however it shouldn't take that long... do you have DMA enabled on your hard drives? (check device manager) --gordo |

After using some Google-fu to figure out how to do that...
Both my IDE channels are set to DMA if available.
Now, my second hard drive will lock the computer for a bit if I go straight to the drive (but not if I shortcut to a folder in the drive) and don't wait several minutes for it to think, but it's always done that, and the problem persisted even after I moved the Eve install my other drive.

No, but they're not THAT fragmented. Both at about 20%. Not good, I'm sure, but Eve is the only program on the first drive to have any sort of problem like that, and the second drive only malfunctions when I try to go into its main directory.

Tried clearing your cache? Mine had over 2k photos in it when I had similer (but not so extreme) problem a few weeks ago. In settings I now have it not to 'generate a picture'. This also helps when during the start-up process as Eve has less to load and runs smoother.
Good luck ----------------------------------------------- perhaps you confused me with someone who actually gives a funk?

I'm having exactly the same problem.
Besides that, opening eve takes a few minutes, logging in takes another one, undocking for the first time takes another one. Clicking on any celestial object causes eve to halt and "load" whatever it is that I clicked: a gate, a planet, a station... Warping is cool. It starts with warp drive active - freeze - and I'm at the object I wanted to be. Jumping into a new system takes ages. You can imagine that pvp is out of the question. Missions is fun, warping to... in a shuttle or a pod to load all the objects, and going back for my ship to kill it off.
I have literally tried everything. Clearing cache, installing new client, disabling audio, ... eveything I have found regarding regular issues with eve.
I have this PC for a while, it's pretty good. 2,6MHz intel 1,5GB RAM 6800XT nvidia Soundmax audio
It happened "suddenly"
Usually when that happens I'm thinking... f***ing virus. So I launched panda antivirus. I tried AVG-antispyware, used CCleaner, defragmentated, checked hijackthis, looked up if the harddisk didn't show PIO-transfer, checked my harddrive with activeSMART (it starts at 42ŚC and maxed at 60ŚC). Still, starting my PC is no problem, and the issues with eve are present from the beginning when the harddrive is "cool". I checked if my motherboard wasn't showing any broken capacitors, I cleaned the dust from all the fans....
The only thing I haven't checked is if there's something wrong with my RAM, but I'm out of options on how to check that.
It might be a clue, but opening other games like GRAW takes also ages.
WHo's the wizzkid here. Baleorg perhaps?

Memory test showed no problems.
BTW, OS is XP Service pack2.
It could be a process/program running in the background, which doesn't show in any process finder.

If not just eve... then look at windows:
Cleared Temp Internet Files? C:\Documents and Settings\logonid\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
Cleared Prefetch folder (MS recommends doing this monthly) c:\windows\prefetch ?
Installed any other programs recently?
Run any registry cleaners?

It isn't just Eve, indeed. But what has been happening could give people a clue to what's wrong. I haven't installed any new programs except the latest eve-patch. As stated before, I have done "the works" regarding to cleaning up my PC. Ccleaner clears the temp files and the registry and lots of other crap. Emptying the prefetch file didn't make any difference. (but good tip anyway)
On the hardware side, the properties of the IDE port on my harddisk states DMA if available, but has no value set. So perhaps it is my harddisk. But that's a bit out of my league.
This problem has been posted on several "helpdesk" forums, but no success so far.
Keep the good advice coming my way. |

For GC13
What kind of harddisk is your "second" hard disk. Example its an maxtor 80Gb, also note its rotation speed (or RPM) for example 10.000, cache etc (or if you know its model type).
Sounds like it is an "slow" harddisk and there are few things you can do to speed it up abit. Go to "my computer" and right click the 2nd hard disk its drive letter assigned to it (for example "D New volume". Now go to properties in the menu that pops up and make sure that "compress drive to save disk space" and "Allow indexing service to index this disk for fast file searching" are disabled. The 2nd option sounds abit contradicting but it actually helps for old / slow hard disks.
Additionally if not done so allready consider to always partition hard disk in partitions of at most 40Gb. This will lower overhead on the hard disk because the tables per "file IO registry" are kept smaller (additionally this would also optimise hard disk cluster size against a single partition of for example 120Gb).
Also depending on the hard disk the bigger cache it has the better and the higher read speed it has the better. If it is an old hard disk (3-4 years) consider "upgradeing" it because you might also start getting other problems soon (bad sectors upto disk failure). If possible (check if your motherboard supports it) even upgrade to an SATA or SATA II hard disk, they make alot of difference speedwise and cause alot less overhead compared to IDE based hard disks.
As for james ****ey this might still be relevant even to your case. Also a note some antivirusses are real CPU hogs (and considered eve loves to "chew" cpu they might be pvp'ing (process VS process) for it ). Try temporarely running without antivirus / firewall / other rotection tools to see if they are the cause of it or not. Although i think your problem might be the same as GC13's.

James, I basicly have the same setup as you aswell. Are you running DualCore CPUs? I'm using a Pentium D 2.66 533MHz FSB with 1Gig of Ram to boot. I've heard that XP and EVE don't handle dualcore management very well, and its always been better for me to give Eve a higher priority setting as well as CPU 0 affinity = 0 | CPU 1 affinity =1 for the ExeFile.exe in taskmanager. It still doesn't help the loading/lag problem though. I've had the problem ever since I started playing at Relevations 1.
Everything you describe in your post as being a problem, I have encountered aswell. Even my HalfLife 2 has been lagging lately and I don't understand why. I've done Virus and Ad-Aware scans and eliminated any threats (very little, but some found) and it still hasn't fixed the problem.
What Forceware/drivers are you using? I'm thinking that it may (or may not) be a driver problem. Older drivers tend to work better (in most 1st party cases) so we should possibly consider rolling back? To what version I'm not sure.
If anyone can suggest a good working driverset for the Gf6800 GS/XT card it would be appreciated.
Let me know if you find a fix, and I'll do the same.

We'll I've gone through many late nights over the course of the last week or so trying to figure out what the hell the problem could be. I'll run down the list of things that I've made to improve my condition. Firstly, I'll list my original problem as it was very similar to James's.
System Specs (Original - With Problem): Pentium D 805 - DualCore 2.67GHz 533MHz FSB x64 1GB Kingston DDR400 XFX 6800XT - 256Mb DDR3 AGP 8x - 128bit Memory bus - 1680x1050 resolution EVE/System Drive: WD 120Gb Caviar 8mb Cache 7,200rmp 420W Enermax PSU - High amperage /w EMF prot. Windows XP SP2
My problem was that in game, I would experience serious lag and framing during combat/mining (events with many things to process) which made the game very hard to play and, at times, frustrating. Using the in-game monitor (CTRL+ALT+SHFT+M) I found myself reaching a MAX FPS in-station around 20 and in-combat LOW FPS of 3-5.
Something was clearly not right.
There has been long-outstanding known issues with XP SP2 and Dual Core processors - they simply just don't work together. Any experienced Dual Core user should be able to tell you that when you switch from SP1 to SP2, there is a SERIOUS drop in performance. Microsoft released a hotfix for DualCore machines with XP SP2, but I found that it was pretty useless. The hotfix can be found here if interested. So my first step to try and remedy the problem was switching to Windows Vista Ultimate x64. This would enable the 64bit technology with my processor as well as help improve my running conditions because Vista was designed with DualCore in mind.
Running Vista, I noticed an immediate increase in Windows usability, and even in EVE-Online game speed. I found that the game had picked up to 20-25 FPS, out of station, and I was in heaven. Problem solved right? Wrong. I booted up the next day to find that after a few minutes of gameplay, the in-game memory (as seen in monitor window) to be running at around 400megs instead of the usual 200-250 as experienced with XP. I also noticed that Vista windows tended to lag out a bit which caused me to do a little more research on Vista and system requirements. For a rough overview of Vista and its capabilities/problems look here. I read on some tech blogs that most games and large memory-oriented applications (such as photoshop etc.) may experience system bottlenecking due to Vista's active memory usage feature. For those of you who aren't familiar with this, Vista has become known as a 'Memory Hog' for this reason but its really not an accurate analysis. Since the general user's system now has 1Gb of ram out-of-the-box, Vista has replaced the 'Scratch Disk' feature and buffers programs in RAM to increase application speeds and efficiencies - anyway, getting back on topic, I decided to buy another 1Gb Kingston DDR400 stick of ram to see if it would remove the constraints of Vista.
After this, Vista started running much more smoothly but EVE was still struggling. I installed the most up to date Forceware drivers as well as Rivatuner to overclock my GPU and card memory frequencies. Rivatuner can be found here. Its a little tricky to get around the Vista UAC, but when booting press F8 and select "Disable Drive Authentication" option to workaround any NVstrap.dll problem. After monitoring my system through Rivatuner, I found that the GPU was running at 70-80 deg C (even before overclocking) - quite hot! So I took the video card out and cleaned all of the dust in the fan and memory radiator unit. This recuded the running core temp to ~65 - 72 deg C and increased my FPS to 40+ in-station and 20-30 out-of-station. So heat was the main problem after all.
The best thing that anyone can do to increase their FPS is clean their damn computer equipment.
