So I have been playing for a little bit now. I am Still level 1 missions. I fly Cruiser or BattleCruiser class, and also trained up in Survey and Salvage.
If you havent trained survey then salvage, Do it. Buy yourself a salvager. Salvage all wrecks and it will increase money by 4X.
Now my question is.. Is there a better way to make ISK other than agent missions and salvaging. It seems early into a career on EVE, this is the best way.
Anyone else have opinions or ideas on the quickest way to make ISK?

You could always try belt ratting in lowsec... You can get some decent BC spawns in 0.1 or 0.2 systems and they (as long as you keep your wits about you) really aren't as dangerous as a lot of people make them out to be.
Also, if you are in a Corp with people that run lots of level 4 missions, ask if you can tag along with them to do the looting/salvaging, I know a few people who have made a nice sum from doing this.

train up your social skills and at least get into lvl 2 missions, then 3s and so on.

I have social, connections and negotiations skills to raise standings and increase the reward money agents offer (although this is minimal next to bounty/salvage). The other obvious way to raise your standing and reach level 2/3/4 agents is by completing lots of missions.

Personally I would advise against ratting in lowsec in anything bigger than a cruiser. BCs are a little slow to warp and most pirates (myself included ) would jump at the (very rare) sight of a BC ratting.
I hear 0.0 can be safer, and it is surely more profitable, but I don't have experience with this aspect of the game yet.
The safest way for you to make money is still probably the salvaging route.

Trading. Look through the market for anything you can buy low and sell high.

If you're in a battlecruiser... you could really be flying lvl2's without much trouble... the money is a lot better. lvl3's should be beyond you assuming you've got your tanking skills up a bit beyond what you started with too.

Edited by: Nash Leigth on 11/06/2007 21:17:47 I found that ratting in low sec paid better than lvl 1-3 missions. Not only did all rats have bounties but they also dropped much better loot. It was different back then, of course, when I started the game, because as all T2 prices crashed so did prices on named items that rats drop. Back then local hull expanders cost 20-30 mil a piece, for example, and if you got one it paid for a number of cruisers or one entire battlecruiser from just one item. Right now I don't know how profitable low sec ratting is - people still say it is better than running missions. It is risk vs reward kind of thing and you will have to deal with pirates. My experience is not standard in this matter because for all the time I spent low sec ratting as a noob I lost only 2 ships to pirates for a total worth of may be 8 mil. I got really good at avoiding and escaping them while ratting, but I know experience of other players wasn't the same, so some people choose to go back to high sec.
I heard people say that 0.0 ratting pays same as lvl 4 missions. While I have ratted quite a lot in 0.0, I haven't done too many lvl 4's - helped out some friends with a few but that's it. In my experience, lvl 4 mission running isn't nearly as rewarding and requires much better equipment and more highly skilled character. Some of these missions involve warp scrambling rats so that when players just progress to the level of having access to them, any mistakes cost them in battleships which is really what you need to fly for lvl 4's. Since I picked the career of belt ratter, once low sec rats stopped being challenging I went onto 0.0 ratting. I ratted with just a bit over 3 mil skill points in a cruiser, made about 10-20 mil an hour and was feeling very happy and much richer than my mission-running friends. I've gotten so good at avoiding pirates in low sec, plus I have gotten very lucky a few times, that I haven't lost a ship ratting for months in 0.0 to a pirate. Just like with low sec, I've had a few close runs but ended up losing more to rats than any player pirates. Once again this wasn't typical because at the same time quite a few people from my alliance lost many battlecruisers and battleships to other players. But even if I lost a ship, it was just a cruiser which making 10-20 mil an hour is really cheap to replace. Eventually I trained up tanking and damage skills so that it took 3 minutes to kill a battleship and I could tank any dual-bs spawn I could find in the area in my flimsy cruiser (I thik I had 5 mil sp by that time).
Eventually I discovered ways of making even more money per hour of playing the game than with 0.0 ratting, so I stopped the ratting to focus on other activities. But in my assessment, comparing lvl 4's and 0.0 ratting, it really depends on what you want to do: make more money and play at more risk - or make less money and play as less risk. Because sometimes you think about it and the money isn't really worth it. All depends on how you prefer to play, because after all it is a game and you're supposed to have fun with what you do, not just make ISK doing it.

I've got a few ideas listed on my guide, but most strongly I suggest Salvaging. For newbies, it's awesome. You can get 100 to 250K of materials from NPCs you kill, easy and often. -

If you are in a BattleCruiser you should be flying through the L1 and L2 missions (no pun intended). A BC is complete overkill for those missions. Keep grinding through the low levels to get to L3 missions (where the BC will come in handy). Make sure to work on your tankin skills cause they will be extremely useful in higher missions.
As others have suggested you could do some low sec or 0.0 ratting for some very easy cash. I spent last week at our POS and was ratting in my Tristan blasting 375k ISK spawns with my simple T1 blasters and rockets. As Selene had mentioned the rats are definitely not as hard as people make them out to be. Granted, you DO have to be careful and my purchase of a T2 AB and a T2 Armor Repper really helped solidify my ability to stay alive. That coupled with the fact that if I came close to trouble, the little frigate can align/warp so much faster than the bigger ships its amazing.
After about 5 days of ratting in low sec I managed to pull in approximately 20 mil. Granted this is relatively low compared to what others are able to amass in a simple day...some of my mates can pull 80 million a day if they focused ;) Gotta remember the nicer loot that is dropped as well (no salvage tho). I never was acosted by a pirate either, altho I kept a watchful eye on local.
Be brave! Take a trip down to 0.1-0.0 and see whats cooking. Just make sure that WHATEVER you take down there you are willing to lose. I wouldn't have minded if I lost my Tristan and mods since I only had about 2.5 million sunk into it (mostly because of the couple T2 items I had). ----------------------------------------- Don't submit to stupid rules Be yourself and not a fool Don't accept average habits Open your heart and push the limits |
