I run eve from my clean E drive on purpose!
I DO NOT WANT MY CACHE ON C:\whatever\whatever\...
your /end /LUA:OFF switches don't seem to fix that problem...
Please, how can I have my cache where I want it?

Edited by: Ishina Fel on 19/06/2007 23:09:28 the /end /LUA:OFF switch makes sure the settings, pictures, browser, fonts, map, shader, temp and texture folders remain in your installation directory.
Still outsourced to the system partition are screencaps and chatlogs. Nothing else.
If that didn't work for you, you didn't set the switch properly

1. Blame Microsoft and Vista for that. CCP had no choice.
2. The "<path_with_spaces_in_it>\eve.exe" /end /LUA:OFF works. Just DON'T use it as written in the patch notes, write it like in here (notice the location of the quotes). _ New char creation guide | Module/Rig stacknerfing explained |

Patch notes show quotes in the wrong place.
Make sure your properties / target looks like this:
"C:\path to eve client\CCP\EVE\eve.exe" /end /LUA:OFF

and get ready for a LOOOOOOOOONG wait, dont kill the client, if it uses CPU in task manager that means it still alive, just needs time. A lot of it. Took my client about 20 minutes to start working, despite putting the required switches in command line. Just be patient ;)

I agree this isn't ideal. I can't begin how much its going to screw with my RAM drive, and I can't remember how I installed it. :S

Well, sort of.. They could have detected the OS and programmed a conditional move. Not too hard really.

Keeping it simple is a good practice. 10000 x simple = complicated

You could try to move your cache folder where you want and drop a shortcut in the install dir

I guess you could always tell windows to use a folder on a different drive to store documents and settings. --- WTS: Forum Signatures, price negotiable. Evemail me!

Start -> rm My Documents -> properties -> move (if i recall right)
or rm anywhere on mydocs works too i think (exept when you actually browse to it in the filesystem, then it's just like any other folder)

You can use NTFSLink to symlink the folder, solving the problem.
Its a stupid change by CCP though.

vista won't allow programes to mess around in the install-dir for programs, for security, just like operating systems do.

You can, but you need to use the gpedit tool and edit UAC and something else.

Does anyone know if it specifically points to the folder Quote: "C:\Users\%user%\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE"
Or does it actually point to the UserData Folder variable?
If it points to the system variable, then I should be fine because I moved my UserData folders to the D: drive. I'd still rather have them under Eve though.

Why shouldn't a program be able to edit its own directory?

Because computers may be used by more then one person. If your program should support such a situation you will have to keep user data in separated directories anyway.
If you do backups (do you?) separation of user and application data is a good idea too. Same goes for migration to a different host. --
There are countless games in the world. There are at least as many ppl that dont like one or more rules of said games. That never stopped smart game designers from creating good games.

Except, of course, that its more likely that one person will have multiple EVE accounts than the single EVE account will be used by multiple people.
Especially since the latter is against the rules, and the former will result in the cache being shared between accounts, borking them all up.

It is still possible to keep everything nice and contained.
This has been discussed in the development forum.
You need to create the folders
<EVE>\My Documents <EVE>\Local Settings <EVE>\Local Settings\Application Data
And then start EVE with the bat file (correct paths as required):
set USERPROFILE=C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE start "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe"

<EVE>\My Documents <EVE>\Local Settings <EVE>\Local Settings\Application Data
And then start EVE with the bat file (correct paths as required):
set USERPROFILE=C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE start "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe"
Thats a good idea actually. Aditionally I dropped a "EVE.CMD" in the \EVE directory, made a shortcut to it - gave it the EVE icon.
Content of the EVE.CMD:
Quote: SET ThisDir=%~dp0 SET HOMEDRIVE=%~d0 SET HOMEPATH=%~p0 set USERPROFILE=%ThisDir% START %ThisDir%eve.exe /end /LUA:OFF
However - the bloody "\EVE\capture\Portraits" folders are still created under \My Documents. Grrrrrrrrr - I dont want that rubbish in *MY* documents.
CCP - please listen to your customers, let us be able to move the content of "My Documents" by using either: - PREFS.INI - or Registry
EDIT: Bummer - typo in the EVE.CMD file --------------------
- It's better to keep your mouth shut and let people believe you're an idiot, rather than opening it and removing all doubt.

Pls no. One of the good things about EVE is that it is (or was) just a directory tree of files, and didn't require permissions to mess with the registery etc.

edit: Seconding the prefs.ini idea. No registry hax required, and it gives us a choice. I like to use a ramdisk for my cache because that ****zle makes eve go zoooom. ______ Unrepentant Southern Federation Cheerleader.
