prefs.ini has been retired it seems.
I've moved it to every possible folder that eve might look at with no luck. I've also tried opening pretty much every single file in the eve folder and the new eve docs folder thinking that for some reason they might have renamed it, but to no avail.

prefs.ini is in
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\<username>\Lokale Einstellungen\Anwendungsdaten\CCP\EVE\settings
in an english Windows it might be:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Applicationsdata\CCP\EVE\settings
(they are hidden directories by the way)

Yes haxar! works!!! I've just fresh install eve..
The prefs.ini is in different location like haxar say.. is in C:\Documents and Settings\%USER%\Impostazioni locali\Dati applicazioni\CCP\EVE\settings
but i do another mistake!
I open prefs.ini and put advanceddevice=1
and doesn't work!!!!!
is very important (because is case sensitive)
advancedDevice=1 (D is upper!!!)
Bye!

To get the files back where they "belong" this was in the patch notes.
Client Changes Changes to user settings, capture and logs :
In Windows XP & Windows 2000: * User Settings : C:\Documents and Settings\%user%\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE * Capture and logs: C:\Documents and Settings\%user%\My Documents\EVE
In Windows Vista : * User settings : C:\Users\%user%\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE * Capture and logs: C:\Users\%user%\Documents\EVE
This can be reset to the pre-Revelations II location by adding: "/end /LUA:OFF" after the "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe" target in the target box in your shortcut. After this adjustment, settings and data are saved as they were saved pre-Revelations II. The shortcut should appear aS follows: "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe" /end /LUA:OFF
Unfortunatly i've been unable to make it work. Maybe someone could try this? Raindrop

this is an increasing common practice, in fact, 90% of the applications i've worked with over the last few years store their application data under the "C:\documents and settings\<user>\" directory. usually they are small txt files to keep track of settings. bottom line is create your windows partition with a bit extra space. CCP arent doing anything in anyway unusual here.

Yeh I know...Its a hassle which means I'm going to have to format my HDD drive which is almost fine but I'm holding out to get an external HDD...this could be 2 months so in the mean time I'm going to have to monitor the cache file religiously

I have these switches running on three machines, two vista & 1 Win XP Pro, no probs at all...
"F:\CCP\EVE\eve.exe" /end /LUA:OFF
Note, these switches are case sensitive. This will leave all the files in their current place...

Is this effective after cache has been migrated as well? I didn't realize this was a possibility until reading this forums (I should say I forgot, as I read every line of patch notees ). Furthermore, after using this command line entry, I assume it's safe to delete the newly created folder? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

it's a hidden folder, you'll need to have them displayed in order to see it

Local Settings folder is hidden. To make it visible you will need open My Computer, click Tools button then choose Folder Options.
In Folder opens you will want to click the View tab.
In the Advanced Settings window you need to click Show Hidden Files and Folders.

There is a very good reason that Microsoft has local user storage areas (such as this AppData directory, among others). If you have ever been in a real domain, chances are you might be using what are called Roaming Profiles. This means you can log in to systems in your domain and your profile will be copied over from the Domain Controller to the local system you're logging in to (this is so you don't have to log in to the same system every time to get your settings). If you are partitioning your system to store just enough data for Windows and some apps, you should seriously reconsider your partitioning schemes for Windows - or read up on how to tweak profile settings on your system to change the directories where profiles are stored.

Nothing works.
I added advancedDevice=1 to the pref.ini file located in the app data\...\settings folder. No results.
I added /end /LUA:OFF to the eve shortcut, after applying the patch and hence migration.
Now, color depth and depth/stencil format can be changed to 32 bits!! But, I'm still stuck with windowed mode at 1600x1200 and full screen at 1024x728; it s/b windowed mode at 1280x1024 and full screen at 1600x1200.
This crap is driving me crazy and is completely unncessary, as I'm not using Vista and have absolutely NO plans to do for at least a year or more. Why force EVERYONE into an unncessary "migration", which is screwing up things?
Have the Devs, ever heard of the phrase, "if ain't broke, don't fix it."!!!???

Toranaga, i'm no technical expert by any means, but if you changed the prefs.ini file and you added the file migration target, then perhaps your modified prefs.ini (located in the folder "Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\settings" or whatever, is still located there).
I just tried this "/end /LUA:OFF" thing myself and now i have a cache and capture folder back in my EVE folder, but when i loaded up my client my usernames had disappeared, making me believe that you don't get your cache etc actually moved back, but you get to create a new cache and capture folder in your main EVE folder as you could pre-Rev II, so that the folders appearing there now are new and therefore empty.
So just copy over your advancedDevice=1 prefs.ini from your Application Data folder to your newly relocated cache folder in your main EVE folder, because the Application Data directory for your EVE files still remains after you've migrated your stuff back.
Please someone correct me if this is not the normal situtation because i only just tried it quickly now.

The command-line switches, last I checked, do not change the location of the settings files. They only change the location of the cache.
To change EVERYTHING, see this thread.

Well, I fixed my problem. I put in a Petition and the GM asked for my dxdiag info; but before sending it I looked it over and noticed this in the Display Devices section:
Monitor: Generic (or something like that) Monitor Max Res: 600,800
I knew this was not correct. So I, right-clicked desktop, display properties, settings, advanced, monitor.
I noticed that my monitor was set for Generic. I changed that to Cornerstone p1700 and whalla!
Everything is as it s/b. I have access to all resolutions. My fault, just prior to Rev II, I was screwing around with "video out" and different players, editing, etc., blah, blah. ****Forgot to change settings back***.
Thank you for your help and time.
***embarrassed** :))
Now, if I could get my UI Settings and Overview settings to stay set and quit changing every time I log-in, life w. Eve would be good.

If you cannot find the file, use the search function.
Because the file is at the location it was moved to if your not using the command to keep it at its old location.

Edited by: Justus Sandrius on 25/07/2007 19:57:30 Hi Devs and moderators, I think a sticky is needed on the location of the prefs.ini and how to find it (some systems have their folder settings on hidden, so the complete EVE folder wont show in the local settings). It has changed place.
