A series of short horror films i watched when i was younger. Part of some movie season on Ch4 or something similar.
All the movies were extremely low budget, if anything though it added to horror effect. All of the short movies were forgettable except one.
a 10 minute long movie were a man is getting ready for work in the morning. His wife is seeing to the kids, making breakfast. The kids can be heard running around making all sorts of noise. But the camera just follows the dad. He irons a shirt munchies on toast then goes for a shave.
While hes in the bathroom the camera is positioned just behind his shoulder. (At first i never even realised that you didnt even see the camera reflected but anyway) He washes his face then lathers up some nice shaving foam. His wife shouts up the stairs his kids are still running amok, the man laughs.
He starts shaving and by this point your thinking what the hell is all this about. He bends down to wash his face but his reflection stays exactly were it is. Its eyes started bearing down on this guys head as he washed his face.
Then he stands up and his reflection instantly acts as normal. He bends down again his reflection gains its manic experssion again only this time its faster. He drys his face and brushes his teeth bending down again and again to spit in the sink. Each time his reflection is getting worse and worse and gelid smile arced its way across its face. It looked human but wasnt at the same time extremely eery.
I cant detail how they done it or even describe the mans face but it was nerve wracking. Eventually the man finished up and left the bathroom his reflection watched him go and for the last 30 seconds you are left alone with a reflection that is furiously trying to get out of the mirror. The clip ends when it fixes its eyes on you and its hands reaches through the mirror to grip the frame.
I was about 12 when i saw that movie and i did not like our bathroom mirror for a long long time. Funny enough it co-incided with my period of extremely unkept hair
It was by in far the eeriest creepiest scariest thing i have seen.

That double dream bit, where you think the guy has woken up from a nightmare, and the nurse goes to open the curtains ...
Hehehe, here you go ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkXsIa62bmg (Don't watch it if easily scared etc. etc.)

I actually restrict my horror movie watching - it makes the few I do watch all the more affecting and terrifying. Something about desensitizing yourself to the horror doesn't sit right with me.
That said, 28 Days Later is the scariest movie I've ever seen. My Wife is a horror connoisseur and she had just as many nightmares as I did after seeing that movie. It didn't help that I was put on new painkilling medicine just at the time we watched that movie; I kept waking up paralyzed and semi-conscious. Not a good situation when you think there's zombies out to get you.
She would also like to add The Descent as a scary scary movie; I refused to watch it after finding out it had a leg breaking scene. (I am all sorts of messed up after breaking my leg on a motorcycle a decade ago). My Wife keeps asking me to watch The Descent; it's become a running joke between us.

Only film I have watched that made me jump was Alien, the scene where Dallas is in the air ducts with the flamethrower.
You know the Alien is going to jump out of nowhere and get him, yet everytime I watch it it still gets me.

when I was younger almost any film with anything slightly scary used to mess me up completely. now i'm older I seem to have become numb and I couldn't tell you a film that scares me, Event horizon is one of my favourite films of all time.
one thing engrained itself so deeply that it may actually still scare me.. if I was suddenly confronted with The Groke then I think i'd just die.

The Grudge - I thought it was scary and yes I'm talking about the american version.
Jaws - this movie totally messed me up as a kid. I saw it when I was 6 or 7 and it took me over a year before I dared swimming in the sea. I still a little bit scared of sharks today because of this movie

3 movies tie it up for me all cause I was realy young when I saw em for the first time:
Poltergeist (the first one only): I grew up having Weeping Willow trees that scratched on the windows of my room >.<
Nightmare on Elm Street (the first one only): Led to years of nightmares I HAD to wake up from or die lol
Alien(s): The first or second though the second was more action movie than horror IMO I had a heating/cooling vent right outside my room as a child and after seeing those movies I couldnt walk on it for ANYTHING >.<

Event Horizon, scary when i first watched it, saw it the other day and it wasnt scary but it was awesome. Troll 2.....Seriously the acting absoloutely terrifies me in that film (youtube it to see some prime examples)

Edited by: Nai Ling on 26/06/2007 12:59:28 For me..
1.) The Grudge 2.) The Ring 3.) The Exorcist (when I was small... now I f'in love that movie)
I really can't understand the fad nowadays to create movies that are more gory for the sake of being sick and depraved rather than actually trying to scare you. A good focal point for my arguement would be the new Exorcist: The Beginning, and The Hills Have Eyes (remake). They were just bloody and sick just for the sake of trying to gross you out. Not scary, just something that makes me walk out of a theatre and ask for my money back.
I really like M. Night Shamaylan (or however you spell it) movies, though. They are 100% suspense. That's borderline horror for me. Sitting on the edge of your seat, completely engrossed in what's going on, and then something pops out, you get totally freaked, and it's just some ******* comming in to check on the poor defenseless girl/guy. My favorite ones from him are "The Village," "The Sixth Sense," and "Signs." _______________________________________________

And I just LMAO'd thru the ring 2. It was ridiculous. THE FAIL.
Chick climbing outta the well, with that thing after her, that is supposed to be the climax? It wasnt even remotelly scary. "mommy, mommy.." "Im not your ******* mother!"

I agree with the above poster. Gore is not scary. To many people, especialy those like us who are ingrained with the internet growing up, are just to de-sensitized to violence to be concerned with a woman getting her eyeball scorched out. I like movies that make you jump, without resorting to graphic violence.
Older movies ive liked threw the years: The Thing, its a classic, and one of the only movies i like kurt russel in outside of big trouble in little china Event Horizon, great movie The Shining, another classic Cant go wrong with the first couple nightmare on elm street, halloweens, hellraisers, friday the 13th type movies. All of the above kinda suck after the first 2 or 3 movies.
I saw 1408 last weekend. One of the best thriller/horror type movies. Minimual grotesque violence, and still made you flinch. Also has great use of lighting, and excellent use of sound as a way to stimulate the watcher.
