I'm going to assume that the alliance tourney in all of it's glory will again be released on DVD this year. If I could make one request which is very important to me. Could the DVD please be released in two versions PAL/NTSC. I hate the fact that I can not watch the last tourney on my TV and that I'm forced to watch it on my computer.

Edited by: Danton Marcellus on 25/06/2007 00:36:44 I'm actually interested to see what the clowns are up to in the studio, especially for the matches I never got to see.
Oh, that would be the last tournament though, the hardly documented one.

Well, tbh I don't see what the trouble would be with making two versions. Sure it would take a couple more hours for video conversion but after that you can just copy the DVD for anyone who wants one. I'm guessing that converting the video to the NTSC format is all that it would take... not too much work... a little time... and a better product.

Yeah, NTSC version would be nice.
Was looking forward to watching it on my home theater, too. :(

I am sure in Aug there will be a DVD thread I think the biggest issue is... what is featured on the DVD..
The Tourney is 6-8 hours of (free) broadcast for 6 days so adding in all the matches in a DVD is almost impossible. However we will of course take on feedback.
As stated before.. Do we format the broadcast for broadcast or DVD is the big question. It can be seen as just plain silly to format tv guidelines during the broadcast because the status icons would be squished towards the middle of the screen otherwise. While at the same time on a DVD could be running off the edge.
So thats the debate I will leave up to the viewers... smaller view of combat or the possibility that some of the sides of the dvd will crop. What should the DVD include.

Question: What's the biggest issue with a release of all the material? I'd love to have it all. :)

jalipo's licensing deals presumably would forbid that ( i'm assuming here that the tourny will be on a free jalipo client with a paid for "premium" stream as was tried last time - i believe xyl or someone has suggested this would be so elsewhere) This is not to mention the horrific logisticxs involved, even with chribba's help and torrents that is an awful lot of footage to make availible.

I guess the main issue is the size of the media, the compression rate you are willing to accept, and how many discs in total that equates to.
To compress 36 hours of media to a single dual-layer I'm guessing you would end up with around 0.5 Mbps average for video. I've never even experimented with lower than 2 Mbps average, and that was just to point and laugh at the compression artifacts. Final quality depends a lot on the quality of the source media and the encoder, but I assume you need around 6 dual layers to stand any chance of enjoying the material on anything larger than your computer screen.
But this is just off the top of my humble head, maybe I'll crunch the numbers after a good nights sleep and a cup of coffee.
On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero. |

First lets answer Blinky....
a box set of 6-12 DVDS would be ...... a lot of work you would be amazed on the 1-3 day transcoding time of 1 DVD and that would still be with editing it down some. Point 2 is production and printing cost. Bulk printing is okay for 1-2 discs but then more you have to get a huge box set etc which would cost players a decent penny for say a box set that size... and lastly space. We are talking about hundreds and thousands of g's.
As for the last tourney .... In Aug there are talks atm of throwing the community some free viewings of last time as a teaser for the next tourney.... < hides so no one sees she spilled the beans >

Why? I can fit 4 hours of TV quality video recording on a commercially available DVD-RW, so thats only a 2 disk set. And unless I'm much mistaken, it's pretty much standard practice these days to sell DVD features in 2 disk sets (movie + special features) so it wouldn't exactly break the bank.

What's the possibility of releasing it on a couple double-sided discs? Surely that's got to help in terms of available space.
Quality of the video becomes an issue I suppose, but surely there are options available.

Here's a handy little tool for calculating bitrates and such for you to play with:
DVD Calc
DVD5 and DVD9 are you typical choices for single/dual-layer discs. Commercial DVD releases typically have an average bitrate of 3.5 Mbps, with max peaks of 7-8 Mbps for the lively bits. Studios have high quality source media and top encoders though. If you are compressing a DV source with your commercial authoring tool at 3.5 Mbps, you'll see a very noticeable quality difference from your boxed LOTR set.
Contacting a professional authoring house and getting a price quote on this would probably be a good idea. I've found that using guys that do this type of work for a living can do wonders for my mental health.

I'd pay upto ú20-30 for the complete boxeset of the torney personally, which is about the same as a series of the sopranos or something here in the UK, I doubt that the production costs would be anywhere near as high for the eve torney boxset.
So MMM I doubt i'm the only one who would pay for it, theres potential money in it for ya ;)

I'd pay some serious dough for a full boxset, as long as it had everything it it, and didn't clip off at the sides.

Edited by: Nate D on 24/09/2007 01:56:54 If CCP/Whitewolf can sell a picture book for $50 I'm sure that would be an alright price for some quality video of the tourney.

Edit: I bought the book the day it was announced.
