For everyone who doesn't know of one very important game mechanic that they fail to mention until it happens to you. For those that already know about this please avoid posting flames....
Everytime you do something in EVE there is a 30s "session" change
Docking, changing ships, jump clones, etc, all of those are session changes, but MOST importantly... When you jump into a new system.
Yes, that's right you have 30s before your allowed to jump to the next system, so that means if you make it to the next gate in say 20s you have to spend 10s more sitting at the gate recieving "Session change in progress" and at which you are vulnerable to being killed.
So to avoid this make sure to STAY cloaked for 20s if your next gate is very close to where you entered the system, otherwise your a sitting duck at the next gate.
Amamake is a perfect example of this being a problem.
if you come from Siseide gate and Dal gate to the Osoggur gate it takes less than 30s to get there. Which is why it's such a popular camping spot for pirates with smartbombs. Because they know with the session change issue that you most likely will be stuck there.
So basically they are exploiting a very flawed game mechanic.
You have been warned.

This is not a flawed game mechanic, it is there for many reasons.
These session changes also include changes to gang/fleet roles.
Once you know about this mechanic, you can adjust your behavior to match. You have been warned.

Yeah, and ask yourself how is it 99% of players get to find out about this " game mechanic"? they get blown up and podded at a gate losing thier ship, items, and implants. They petition it and find out by some Gm who doesn't give a rats ass about what happened and knows that MOST people in EVE don't know about the session change.
so yeah naturally you adjust your gameplay AFTER already LOSING things to this ******** game mechanic.
Go troll elswhere noob, it's wonderful YOU know bout it. But I am trying to help players WHO DON"T know about it
so GFY

Honestly, I expect that a lot more players learn about it by trying to dock just after undocking. It will pop up with the same warning.
I am sorry about your loss. Players also need to learn that you will experience losses due to mechanics that you are not aware of prior to your loss. This game is simply too complex to know everything about how it works. Some mechanics are broken and need to be fixed. Most are the way they are for a reason.

No, it's a stupid game mechanic. It annoys me every time I dock and want to change ships. It gets people killed who don't know about it. It also guarantees that you get podkilled in that situation - because you can't jump for 30s after you transition from ship to pod.

Thank you for the post Kirell. I have encountered this mechanic many times while docking, but I never realized that it would apply to gates, as well.
Please don't feed the trolls.

The easiest way to avoid getting podkilled because of session changes is to have a safespot you can go to after your ship explodes. I know that you might not necessarily have a safe spot in any given system, but Ive found its a good idea to have them in any system you frequent

Which brings me to my question. I've read a lot about making safespots and advanced safespots, but I can't seem to be able to make any. I know you're supposed to bookmark while warping between two celestial objects to make a spot that you can warp to, and then can warp from there to somewhere else to make an advanced SS, but I can't find the "make bookmark" option while warping. I get it when I right click on a planet or something. I've tried right clicking in space, on my ship, on the overview window... nothing. Is it because I'm still on trial or am I missing something incredibly obvious?

This game isn't like other MMO's. It has a very high learning curve and a lot of undocumented information that gets passed down via player talk over issues and forum topics.

Its there so I can't undock in whatever, insta dock from a camped station, change up and re-undock in 5 seconds in the ship I need to kill whatever is out there.
for Instance, 5 ship camp, I undock in BC.. I can't instadock, they get a chance to kill/bump or whatever. I can't just dock and grab a dread and pop out to kill them in 2 sec. Its all there for balance and planning.

Click the People and Places button on the left side of your screen. Once that opens up, select the bookmarks tab, or places tab, cant remember the exact name, sorry. Either way youll get a button in the bottom of that window that says "Make Bookmark"
Keep in mind the bookmark is made when you CONFIRM it, not when you hit make bookmark. So confirm it when you are at where you want the bookmark to be.

It's not a "stupid game mechanic" it's just another aspect of the game. What, do you really think that the inability to insta-switch ships is that big of a deal? Most people can't change their pants in 30 seconds, and you're talking changing ships.
Besides which, I would wager that 99% of the EVE population becomes aware of the session change delay long before it costs them a ship and/or pod. It doesn't take an advanced degree in physics to realize that major changes to the game take a little while to take full hold.
By the way, I know for a fact that when your ship blows up you are not hit with the session change timer. I've made several exploratory trips into hostile space in a fast Frigate only to come across a hostile gate-camp. Most of the time I can MWD back to the gate and return-jump without any trouble, and when I fail and my ship gets blown up as long as I've made it close enough to the gate my pod jumps through without issue.
It is a good thing to know up front, so I don't fault you the attempt to warn players that may not have experienced the session change delay. However, it's not one of those uber-critical game mechanics that is a "must know" for survival. --Wherever you go, there you are.

The timer that prevents docking/jumping after ship destruction is 10 seconds. Self-destruct and eject take longer.
----- Tip #243: There is a 30 seconds cool-off timer between most state changes (dock/undock/jump/explode/die/change ship/etc.) known as "Session change". |

I really don't think that's right, cuz my pod would've been liquified more than once if there were really a 10s gap between the explosion and the jump.
situation, I'm within 2,500m of the gate when my ship blows up and I hammer on the "jump" button on the overview. 10s is more than enough time for my foes to lock my pod, and it's not exactly of robust construction. So there's no way my pod can be fully 'in space' for that long.
So either A) the explody sequence takes up some of that 10s before my pod is lockable in space, or B) I can't think of a B since I know the ship setups used and they can lock pods in well under 10s. --Wherever you go, there you are.

The docking timer I can see the need for. What about the gate timer? Going back through the gate is the only option if you're next to it and in a bubble.
