Edited by: Siigari Kitawa on 28/06/2007 03:12:03 This game seems to exhibit more themes of an RTS than of an RPG.
What's an RPG?
Typically it involves
Leveling up a character by destroying or killing NPC spawns that give you experience points, at which you will receive a certain amount and "level up". You learn different abilities with the experience you gain, and are able to wield new powers as you level up higher. You do lots of quests and gain special items which strengthen your character. You also role play a character, which is typical however of any game you play.
Those are some of the defining qualities of an RPG.
For example, in any RTS, you typically
Do research on things you can build or use, harvest materials for money, build factories, manufacture lots of "units", then you zergrush your opponent with all forces available to wipe them out and take over their resources, while keeping defenses at your own bases in place.
Sounds pretty straightforward.

This definition of RPG is so 70's. It is not mutualy exclusive, Eve is a RPG in which some people roleplay strategists and tactician, those people play Eve somewhat like a RTS.

You get to play all the strategic elements in a regular strtegic game (logistics, building etc) and you get to be the little grunt unit that pewpews stuff. That's what EVE is :). The ultimate strategy game where you are also a grunt ^^

LoL every video game is a RPG. Think about your simulating being a space pilot or maybe a football player. It really doesn't matter.

One of the reasons I like EvE, except for missions of course, the game doesn't make you out to be some godly leet hax, of course we are the few, the proud, the pod pilots...

Somebody made a similar point recently essentially saying that the alliance and corp leaders are playing a RTS and the rest of us are their grunt units in the game they play.
Actually, sounds more like feudal warfare. MMORPRTFWG.

Agreed. I just beat STALKER: Shadows of Chernobyl.
There are no levels, no skills, yet the closest games I've found to compare it to are something between Deus Ex and Oblivion. Its sure as heck an RPG, at least in part! That proves at least IMO that you don't even have to have character advancement to make it an RPG.
An RPG is a game where your actions and existence in a game strongly depend on what type of character you choose to play.

RTS = any game that isn't turn based and depends on winning by thinking just a little bit.
RPG = any game where you play a character other then yourself

No. Just no.
RPG is a game which supports role playing your character. It gives you enough options to make decisions that are suitable for the character you choose to play. It does not force you to take actions that are against the morale of your character. Leveling up and gaining abilities has nothing to do with role playing. They are just mechanics.
Many so-called CRPG's fail on this point. EVE comes pretty close. The actions you take on this game have effects beyond your character. You can actually try to shape the world via your actions. No one forces your character to do anything (s)he wouldn't do, even though someone might try to tell you what you should do. It is, however, your decision that matters, not his.

Eve has many dimensions. I think its basically like a RTS in 3D space, where every player fly one "unit" in the game instead of controlling hundreds and collect resources, but its also like a mmorpg where you level your character through different kinds of pve activities.
You could say the same about WoW. Its basically Warcraft where each player controls a unit. Eve has many more dimensions though, like economics, the dynamic market system, invention, ships with tons of configuration options etc.

(lol MMORPRTSG)
I've played several role playing games that involve absolutely no levels whatsoever. PARANOIA, for one. The games published by White Wolf, for another.
I played online roleplaying games back in the mid 90's, MUSHes like Texas Twilight and Cajun Nights. Of course those were based on White Wolf's stuff, but they had no levels either.
I know that the fantasy side of it is heavily into levels (thanks Gary Gygax) and I know that online fantasy games specifically seem to live and die by the level (but I have no interest in those) but it seems that your expectations of what an rpg is perhaps comes from a lack of broad-based gaming experience. Which could mean that you have a broader base of real life than some of the rest of us
I do agree with the RTS aspect of it. One important aspect of RTS's that I have played that differs from Eve is that in RTS you pay for an upgrade and it applies to every unit. In Eve you gotta tell each unit to upgrade, probably pay for it separately, and listen to it whine about really wanting to go back to what it was doing before.

Most RPG don't have levels actually, you'll have trouble finding a non-fantasy RPG with levels.
