Couple minutes after i logged in, Finnish channel looked like THIS.
Whole channel seems to be very very annoyed (to put it mildly) about those damn spammers. (and im sure its same thing in every single major channel).
Was thinking how to get rid of them, heres couple (some usable, some less than usable and some propably quite stupid) ideas:
1. Automatic chat channel monitoring
- chat servers are automatically monitoring all major chat channels for certain strings (for example, known isk seller web site addresses). - when string is found, GM is notified and (s)he can quickly get rid of the spammer.
This would make process of getting rid of these spammers quite bit faster (ie: remove petition process).
2. ISD monitored chat channels. - Give ISD right to mute people. - When ISD member sees spammer, he could simply mute the spam bot.
Again, it would make process quite a bit faster.
3. IP address monitoring and banning. - All IP addresses of accounts banned for ISK spam are logged. - When certain IP pops up regularly (lots of trial accounts banned from that IP), ban the whole IP address (or certain IP address range).
Yeah, yeah, i know this doesnt work too well. (dynamic ip addresses, proxy servers, and all that fun stuff makes it hard). But it could possibly get rid of some of them.
4. Require credit card number for trial accounts. - And ban the credit card number completely (if multiple violations happen)
5. Make trial accounts invite only. - Means that only current players can invite their friends - invited trial account is used for spamming purposes, trial account who gets banned and account who invited it gets a warning (and eventual ban if it continues).
OK, fifth one might be bit too harsh (but it was just an idea) :p --- Get rid of those *bleep*ing secure containers. *bleep*! |

A suggestion to ccp: throw the offending sites on the word filter so that they can't be linked in chat. Problem solved, thank me later.

That's how I see it. Not pleasant, but... that's how it might actually be.
Probable internal position (publicly unvoiced, of course) on the matter by CCP : "only causes minor annoyance to users but no significant subscription drop rates, trying to properly fight it takes too much resources for the potential benefits it can bring, and might actually reduce new subscription rates by accidentally blocking innocent people (potential future subscribers) from the game if we take an IP-based approach, or could also reduce new member growth if we limit trial signups in any other ways than email addresses".

Possibly.
But it also eats quite a bit of GM time because im sure they get huge amounts of petitions for these spammers. And every petition needs to be processed.
Its only minor annoyance if they have monkeys working as GM team who work for bananas (otherwise it costs CCP quite a bit of money) :) --- Get rid of those *bleep*ing secure containers. *bleep*! |

Uhh yeah that wont work. Please look into the whole spam filtering thing ... baysan and keyword filtering and you will see that filtering content is incredibly hard. Even the most hardend spam filters still have things that manage to fall through the *****s. These guys ... there clever. Even more cleaver that you think you are.
Eg, if www.aisksite.com if filtered, then they will start using [email protected] ... and once that gets filtered they will change to a new name ... again and again and again. Then they will start using the special characters that look like the letters ... (vi/-\gra ... v|agra .. etc..). I managed a spam filter for a compnay ... every day they changed things.
If blocking spam was that easy as you think it is, then we would not have things like spam assassin, or any of the professional email spam filtereing services (which cost ALOT OF MONEY) out there. Your solution looks easy ... but really it will not work.
I would also like to point out that there is probably somwhere in the thousands of chat channels in eve. Filtering the content on all of those channels in real time would take another Jita Node server just to do that. Yes you could try it client side ... but then there would be new client spam filter updates every two days.
Sorry but it aint that easy.

A lot of trials are actually new players that are deciding whether or not they want to play EVE or not. EVE isn't exactly the most noob-friendly game in the first place, and ballgagging them is hardley the kind of treatment that would get them to convert their trials.

They have even started spamming the macrointel channel. I would be supprised if there was a channel less likely to have isk buyers in it.

they can type in help and local, they can join the other channels and watch them but cant type in them if their trial. that would be good imo
and blocking known sites in filter is good too
edit: an option for player channels to block trial accounts would be nice too

Other games solve that by having new characters start in a seperate instance which you can only leave after getting to a certain level or having done a number of quests.

That has nothing to do with isk spammers. Its just their way of doing newbie tutorials (doesnt prevent players from joining chat channels) --- Get rid of those *bleep*ing secure containers. *bleep*! |

And in the process they make it a tad more difficult for isk spammers to conduct business, do you really think they didn't think of this rather nice side effect?

There may be a solution here. Allow trials into player channels, but only after a 20-30 minute tutorial.
That'll not put a damper on the real newbies who are likely to stay, but slow the spammers *way* down. If they have to spend 30 minutes to make a spambot (after having to code the path through the tutorial into it) only to be banned seconds after spamming -- may be inconvenient enough to cause some of them to seek alternate advertising outlets.

They will just macro the tutorial, and get back in the channel faster than midget on a slip-and-slide. Anything that a player can do with a few clicks, someone can make a program for.
