If you are effected by the Status: Unknown or are a current Pipex or Tiscali user, and are getting disconencts etc, please try the following.. works for me - however I CAN NOT promise it works for you.
I am in NO WAY affliated to any of this software, nor can I support it for you.
Step 1. Visit the following:
http://www.your-freedom.net/3/
Download the Windows full installer
Create a User account at:
http://www.your-freedom.net
NOTE: I paid for this service, i suggest you do, as the free service will be v slow, and its only around 6 GBP. Bargin tbh.
Install the above, and follow the wizard (v basic - it tells you what to select).
Step 2. Visit the following:
http://www.your-freedom.net/172/
http://openvpn.net/
Download openvpn.
Install open vpn - reboot once its finished.
Then (taken from your-freedom.net site):
Quote: Simply click through the installer, the defaults are fine. Once it's installed, click on "Start", "Control Panel", "Network connections". Find the TAP-WIN32 interface, right-click on it and choose "Properties". In the protocol list, find "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", highlight it and click on "Properties". Use a manually configured DNS server: 81.169.172.219. If you feel like having two of them, use 81.169.141.30 as the second but it's not needed. Click all the OK buttons to close the windows.
Now open your-freedom - it will start a connection. Go to the ports tab and insure OpenVPN is ticked on port 1194.
Now open Eve.
Works for me.

Another solution that works for me its also FREE:
goto http://www.http-tunnel.com/html/ and download the program
install and run
goto settings > configure firewall
select auto detect and check the box "allow up to two ips to connect to http-tunnel
now click test if all is good....
goto setting > add ports/applications
type in ip: 87.237.38.200
application port: 2600
pay attention to the local port it assigns (26000 for me)
hit add and then ok.
Now open eves prefs.ini and change the line networkAdvanced=0 to networkAdvanced=1
Run eve and change tranquility to 127.0.0.1 by typing it in.
Change port to the local port specified earlier
now enter... it may take soem time to get past aquiring bulk data, but it did work for me eventually. I am online now at 16:11 so it appears to be working.

I'm not sure where it is in winxp, i thin its inside the cache folder.
In vista it should be C:\Users\(YOURUSERNAME)\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE\settings\prefs.ini which is probably a hidden folder

Not able to sign on at all, it's "Checking status" all the time with or without "freedom" open, i ticked the box as suggested, and also tried to sign on any number times regardless of status.
After a while it's "status unknown" and i have tried many times with out without freedon open.
I never get past "authenticating" before it locks or kicks me off.
Cheers.

Although blaming BT sounds like a cop-out it is very possible.
If you aren't an LLU customer then your connection is over BT cable, through a BT DSLAM at your exchange, over the BT backhaul to Tiscali.
Even if you are an LLU customer several of the LLU operators are still using BT's backhaul because it means they don't have to lay cables and they know that BT's backhaul is very, very good.
As for her calling a manager it was probably self-defense. Faced with an arrogant know-it-all customer that doesn't have the maturity to remain calm and polite probably left her little recourse.
FIWI I'd be more inclined to blame Tiscali than BT but I only have enough information to know that it's possible - not enough to dispute it. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

Fact is that he rents his service from Tiscali direct, which means they are responsible for dealing with BT Wholesale on the link even through BT kit (you cannot call BT Wholesale direct for example). In this case, regardless of whether the blame lies at BT's end or Tiscali's end, they should be the ones to sort it. Accepting there is a problem and then doing nothing about it is worthy of giving them the finger imo...
Back on topic, I'm surprised at so many people signing up to a VPN that they have no knowledge who is controlling it or has access to it, as it would constitute a major security risk in my view...

Realy weird...
Was having trouble with this earlier, saying that it was checking the status for hours, despite every other game (which in reality means Warcraft 3, and WoW) working as well as was to be expected... I assumed I'd*****ed up the wireless settings ( changed authentication methods on the router ) and assumed it was somehow effecting the EVE connection.
Anyway, I decided to give this a go and installed the VPN software first, then the Your-freedom software stuff after. Just as it finished got the dreaded BSOD. God knows what happened but after restarting, EVE seems to be working normally.
Moral of the story...?

I pay monthly fee for eve, monthly fee to internet provider, so why should I pay aditionall $$$$$ to what you are saying to donwload to make eve to run? CCP should fix that. CCP always say 'It's nothing to do with us, it's your ISP' and while technically correct there is something they can do. They might investigate using the same technique as MSN and have the primary port as 26000 and a backup port of 80.
Dunno how viable that would be.

Then i couldnt get past character selection and it keep cutting me saying that the connection was lost. Tiscali ahve said to me that enginers r trying to fix the prob but they need the ISP and port number of EVE. CCP have got me doing a ping test to c where the problem is, from that it seems that it is Tiscali cus i get packet loss through them. But unusally, i got kicked at 4pm =(

Well, I went ahead and called up Comcast anyway. Told them just about everything I have learned here and how this is seemingly only affecting Tiscali ISP users and others in Europe.
I am the only one I have seen so far having Comcast and in the USA to have this problem, or are there others?
Anyway, the first lady I talked to didn't even want me to give her the server's IP address to trace it, then I lost connection to her. Called back, went through the whole story again with a new rep. and asked him to trace the IP of the Server after he told me that "if I can browse web pages that I should be able to connect" -- I told him my first two hops are coming back as timing out - so he askd for the IP Address and traced it and said "Oh wow that's slow, 144ms" and started reading off the addresses and got to "London" and said "London oh no wonder it's slow" (LOL) - anyway, he said he cannot determine the problem that he has to now forward this off to the Administration to get it looked at in the network...
Soooo... here's hoping it is in Comcasts's realm of fixing... if not, PLEASE CCP - fix this and AT LEAST inform us publicly that your people are looking into these problems. PLEASE! I love EVE, it's so darn fun, I am hating the thought of not being able to play.

Ok this is strange. I just remembered our 2nd PC got a new graphics card a little while back. So I installed EVE on it and what do ya know, "Status: OK" 20,777 players!
I was able to start training my skill on the 2nd PC. So.. now why would this only be affecting MY PC - even after I uninstalled it, reinstalled it, formatted my PC and reinstalled it again?

Going through what is different between PCs - the one it works on has ZoneAlarm, my PC has Nortons Internet Security 2007.
I went ahead and uninstalled NIS and tried to connect and connected perfectly! So this is a Nortons problem?
Even if I just disable nortons, I still cannot connect. However, if I uninstall it comepletely (with the norton removal tool) - I can connect. So Nortons is blocking it for some reason.
This doesn't make sense, for I have been playing EVE with Nortons 2007 since June 25th, last month. Then all of a sudden, it's blocking it? Something in the last patch flagging it bad?
I cannot even see a Log for it blocking anything that would have to do with eve.
I am stumped. - Removing nortons now, I guess I'll use zonealarm for now.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful info in this thread, hopefully my details here on Nortons 2007 may be of use to others who are affected like this like me but are not one of the affected ISPs

Ok this thread is starting to get filled with some rather silly ideas.... There are many reasons as to why you may not be able to connect to eve. Go figure them out. This thread is almost entirely populated with those who have problems with Tiscali's service.
No offense to anyone else, but I dont think anyone here wants to hear about how you supposedly fixed it by doing this or that, when in actuality, you dont run thru this isp's systems, or you do and yr not paying attention to the time of day or you had a completely different problem to everyone else here in the first place.
Nothing any of us tiscali uses can do is ever gonna help us. Except getting tiscali to recognise the problem and fix it or leave tiscali. This isnt some random problem, it 4pm til 12am every single day. Like clockwork! Now get a clue and go post your other problems elsewhere.
And if you think this reaction is a little hostile, them I'm sorry but you just stumbled apon a thread full of some very ****ed off people!

Edited by: Lion El''Johnson on 14/07/2007 09:59:28 I have looked into this issue quite extensively of late. It would apear that pretty soon all ISPs in United Kingdom will be joining on the Bandwidth shaping band wagon.
I had a very interesting call with OFCOM yesterday about it and they basically said that ISPs are within their rights to restrict the flow of bandwidth to its users at any time of day.
This is getting beyond a joke to be honest. This to me is not slowing my access down it is a blatant restriction on the flow of information. This throttling is not just affecting EvE it is affecting everything. It took me 10mins to open my email yesterday.
My ISP is Virgin media and I get exactly the same problem. I can connect to eve but it is lag city until 12midnight. I am currently investigating any and all ISP in UK to find out if they all do this.
I paid for the ultimate service, ie. No bandwidth restrictions and here I am connected to a 56k modem with a hefty price tag.
I will hopefully be able to draw up a list f ISPs that shape their bandwidth. I personally see a mass exodus from tiscali and others.
Oh by the way, OFCOM said they can't look into a singular complaint. So band together intyweb peeps and hopefully we can get this sorted.
edit: If you need to compare ISPs then here is an interesting site to look at... http://www.dslzoneuk.net/

goto http://www.http-tunnel.com/html/ and download the program
install and run
goto settings > configure firewall
select auto detect and check the box "allow up to two ips to connect to http-tunnel
now click test if all is good....
goto setting > add ports/applications
type in ip: 87.237.38.200
application port: 26000
pay attention to the local port it assigns (26000 for me)
hit add and then ok.
I dont have the tiscali problem, but i do have a proxy at work, and cant connect due to it. This method worked for me, although as i write this, im still at aquiring bulk data....this is still way further then ever could get before.
the method in the OP did not work for me, as openvpn will not install on vista...at least the 64-bit vista i am running.

Thank you - it worked perfectly for me. The free vesrion was too slow, so I registered. I am not even in the UK, but the traffic from my ISP is routed through Tiscali. I was on my way to quit eve as my connection was dropping out of the blue and no solution in sight...

This bit you now have to do in the short-cut. So find the Eve icon in your start menu, right-click on the icon, preferences and in the taget box mut this:
"C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe" /end /server:127.0.0.1:26000
I'm guessing you put your port on the end of that... mine was 26000.
Sadly I've not got this working. In the http log it says:
[InetEx2: The parameter is incorrect.||] Server: ;ServerNum: 0.
Please de-alphabetise local! Sort it by time spent in local. I don't want to be at the top of local anymore. Ta!

If you want to pursue the traffic shaping issue with Ofcom I will gladly put my name to it as well. I'm a Tiscali customer not Virgin though. UK based ISPs seem determined to limit internet use to web browsing by any means neccessary. I'm wondering if BBC's watchdog program would be interested in this. Googling for port throttling lead me to a reference to them tackling BT over this a while back and BT recinded the policy before the program aired.
My current strategy is to spend any time I would be spending playing eve flaming Tiscali on whatever ISP ratings sites I can find. Others should do the same. CCP might want to beat on the ISPs a bit harders too, as I know of at least one person who I got to try the trial who is now unlikely to subscribe because he cant connect at peak times due to this issue.
The option of changing ISP is not available to me currently, so I may have to pay for a proxy service.

The N4PALM tunnel worked for me, after I got the info about the shortcut alteration. It's slow as crap, may be faster if I register next month, but I can change my skills and that is what matters.
