Hey there, I am currently listening to DT's newest album 'Systematic Chaos' (actually, make that being totally blown away by it) and was just wondering if there are more DT/Prog Metal maniacs among the Eve players. Although next to DT, I listen mostly to Death Metal (technical DM at that, bands like Necrophagist, Morbid Angel, Nile, Death..), Dream Theater are my all time favorites.
I believe some guy on DT's "The Score" Live DVD put it best; I am talking about the documentary part where fans are interviewed prior to the Radio City Music Hall concert and one guy said: "Dream Theater is five Gods at what they do being put into one band" - I fully agree on that. So, back to my question - anybody else in the Eve community who is a DT fan? Come outta the closet

That is in fact where 9/10ths of DT's cds end up. You start listening to it and are luck "whoa this guitarist is ******* bad ass" and then the singer starts singing, and then the cd is thrown out the window.

Diablo 2 is five years old, and apparently that makes it more mature than the people who play it. |

Right well .. I should slap you around with a trout a little for hijacking my thread, but w/e ^^ .. your question about Death Metal is actually fairly well answered on wikipedia.
Cradle of Filth is definitely not Death Metal, it hardly qualifies as Black Metal actually (too many Goth influences, especially on their newer albums). If you want to know what Death Metal is all about, check out bands like Morbid Angel or Nile. To me, they are the epitome of Death Metal, with all the trademarks that were already utilized by the bands that started the genre in the 1980s, such as guttural growls instead of clean singing, bashing drums and very low tuned (down to A at times), shredding guitars.
However, to put a little twist to it, many bands (such as the two I mentioned) these days utilize the technical prowess of the musicians to create fairly complex songs with a lot of odd time signature changes, high speed blastbeats (north of 240 bpm) and insanely fast double base drumming, while old school Death Metal is rather simplistic in nature. Other bands I'd suggest you get an earful of are Behemoth, Vader, Dying Fetus and Necrophagist, all of them being very skilled musicians who deliver a fistful of metal straight to the face, yet with a lot of bells and whistles added to the songs.
The term Death Metal can be linked to two things .. a) the band Death who were one of the first bands that could truly be called Death Metal (they would later on become one of the most technically complex bands in the genre, up until 2001 when their mainman Chuck Schuldiner died of a brain tumor >_<) and b) the lyrics that bands came up with back in the days which were mostly about death in all variations possible, using very graphic language to add to the overall extreme music they played.
In today's Death Metal however, you will find that a lot of bands moved away from gore/zombie/satanic lyrics to write about politics and society, usually with a very negative take on both things, but most of the times a lot of guys are fairly spot on about what they have to say.
I hope this helped a bit, other than that check the wikipedia article or go ahead and listen to some of the stuff mentioned.

I'm definetly a Dream Theater fan. They are the best musicians around. All of these "Nu-metal" bands can't hold a candle to what DM do live or in the studio. And to the guy above me who said they aren't heavy enough...go to YouTube and look for "The Glass Prison" and watch that live show in Toronto. You won't be disappointed.
Now show me one of these newer poser bands that can play like that
BTW, been listening to DM sense '89.

Absolutely agree with Buxaroo. Dream Theater definitely are the finest assembly of musicians you will find in all of metal. On a related note, DT drummer Mike Portnoy is the youngest ever drummer to be inducted into the drummers hall of fame at the age of 37. If in doubt, check some youtube footage of his drumming and you'll know why.
As far as my fave DT album goes, I cannot really tell. It depends on the flavor of the day for me, but even though I don't think they have one bad song, they surely have a few songs across albums that stand out among all the other great songs. To me, those are 'Pull me under', 'A change of seasons', 'Octavarium', 'The Glass Prison', 'The dark eternal night' (off their new album Systematic Chaos), 'Metropolis Pt. 1', and last but not least (I am sure I forgot some) the whole second CD of their 'Six degrees of inner turbulence' album, which contains the title track with a running time of approximately 45 minutes. The classical intro alone is imo the best mix of rock and classic that was ever written and the lyrical concept of the song(s) is ace (if I'd go into detail I'd have to post for hours ^^).

I absolutely love Dream Theater and have for a disturbingly large amount of years. I still remember hearing their When Dream and Day Unite album while working at a music store and falling instantly in love with them. -- Lil Miner Newbie Skills Roadmap | How to Build from a BPO |
