I am flyign gallente and currently using a navitas, it was 20% bonus to mining laser yield per level and -60% mining laser capacitor use.
first off could someone explain capacitor use? also with only 1 level of this ship, what 'level' is it referrign to?
ok onto my real question, i noticed im very close to destroyer class. and the gallente destroyer class has no relevant mining bonuses, however it has 8 laser slots, compared to 2, they both hold one drone.
im debating which would yield more. also debating imicus, which can hold 3 drones and 2 lasers.
any help appreciated, unsure what ship is best suited for me.

Good luck fitting 8 lasers on the catalyst <_<
OK, your capacitor is the light yellow thingy in the middle of your ship info display when you are in space.
When you use a module it uses a certain amount of capacitor per cycle (see duration in item info). The 60% bonus means that your mining lasers use 60% less capacitor, which leads into the next questions, the 'level' it speaks of would be gallente frigate, as that is the class of ship. Any time you see a 'per level of xxx' in a ships description, if none is listed, then it means the main skill required to fly said ship. For the navitas, it is gallente frigate.
If you are serious about mining, then you will want to work your way up into a mining barge. As a decent interim ship you could get a vexor (cruiser class) that has a mining drone bonus.
The biggest problem with mining in a catalyst is that it lacks CPU power to put very many miners online, and of course no bonus. It also has a rather small hold so you will be jettisoning alot to keep the hold clear in order to avoid continually manually restarting your miners.

The "per level" is referring to each level you have in the skill required to fly it.
The -60% capacitor use is a flat bonus, not per level (obviously).
If you could manage to get eight mining lasers going on a Catalyst, it would yield more than the Navitas could, since the Navitas can only, at most, have a 100% bonus to two lasers, which can't beat eight. Of course, the CPU on your destroyer is lousy, meaning you can put two Miner IIs on your Navitas (with a level or two of Electronics) and out-mine a Catalyst because of the Catalyst's weak CPU not allowing it to fit many lasers.
Stick with the Navitas over the Imicus. That bonus to mining amount on your lasers is way better than two drones.

what other types of modules should i fit my navitas with? mining laser upgrades? i mean how else should i improve my yield? im currently just stuffing canisters with kernite and using my industrial 1 to haul.

Congratulations! You already discovered the mining strategy known as 'Jetcan mining'. This strategy circumvents the small hold on most mining ships by using the gigantic storage capacity of jettisoned cargo containers. Note however that there are 2 serious drawbacks to this strategy which balance out the efficiency you can achieve this way: 1. Jetcans last for about an hour, then they decay, taking all their contents with them. Make sure to pick up your goods often or they will go bye bye. 2. Jetcans are free to be looted by everyone. EVE is unique in that rather than imposing a contrived difficult to enforce 'play nice policy', it actually encourages scamming and theft. Nothing is stopping another player from nabbing your hard earned ore and then shooting you to bits if you try to retaliate against it. In fact, some players actually specialize not so much in stealing the ore, but denying it to the miner and hoping that in order to get it back, he will void CONCORD protection so he can be attacked without repercussions. Be VERY wary when jetcan mining.
Some things to enhance your Navitas: - Mining (duh). Might already be at 5 if you picked the prospector background. - Gallente frigate. As explained above the cargo space and mining yield of your Navitas will increase with each level of this skill. - Miner II's. For turret mining there is no substitute until you can fit modulated lasers. - Mining upgrades. You are right. Bear in mind however that these increase the CPU need for your miners. For mining, CPU = yield. - Electronics. Increases CPU. See above. - Astrogeology. Increases mining yield more (advanced mining). - A mining drone. The Navitas is pretty much defenceless against rats and as an armor tanker the only way to mitigate their damage realistically is to sacrifice a precious low slot for an armor repair module. Might as well go all out and fit whatever boosts mining and just flee when rats appear. - Mining drone operation. Boosts yield. Max this out to be able to use the much more effective T2 mining drone. - Mining foreman. Boosts yield if you are in a fleet and you are in one of the commander slots. If you picked Prospector, you will have this baby at 4 with Leadership 1, meaning you and 2 buddies could form a single wing fleet with all of you benefitting from this bonus.
Eventually you will indeed want to move up to a Vexxor.

This can be extended to about 2 hours if you rename the jetcan. Whether or not you do it to extend the lifetime of a jetcan, it is a good idea to rename it and put the creation time on it - for example "My Precious - 2054" - as it can be easy to forget how old a jetcan is. If you are worried about a jetcan popping, but don't want to have to haul yet, jettison a new can and move the stuff from the old one.

Another thing that won't apply to the Navitas, but is good to know in general, is that you can also increase the CPU of a ship with 'Co-Processor' modules. These need the Electronics Upgrades skill to fit, and fitting one or more of these to your low slots can give you the extra CPU needed to squeeze an extra Mining Laser Upgrade (MLU) on the ship, which means 5% more ISK/hour for the miner!

Indeed, but since the Navitas only has 2 low slots, fitting a co processor isn't really a viable option. It might be one once you hit cruisers though. |

What are the advantages of using cruisers?
It will actually beat the Navitas in Jetcan mining? Assumming you have the Mining 4 and get a %80 bonus...using 2 Miner II's, that's Like having 3.6 miner II's in action.
How do you get a cruiser to match this performance?

Vexor can fit 3 miners as well as 5 mining drones. It gets a 20% yield/level bonus for the drones.
But instead of cruisers, you might as well train up for a Procurer if you're serious about it. It can fit strip miners as well as drones, which will outmine most cruisers (except an Osprey, but it's very close). Train a little more and get a retriever or coveter.

Procurer gets outmined by anything that uses more than 3 lasers...

While I agree that training to Mining Barge/Exhumer is a must for anyone who seriously wants to mine, the Procurer(the smallest ship) is only good for being a component of a Skiff(Tech 2 Procurer). Or if you desparetly need ice, as only Mining Barges can use Ice Harvesters.
Perhaps you meant Retriever(2nd ship)?
If at all, start with a Retriever, better to wait till Covetor, though.

It is possible to squeeze 5 of the EP-S Gaussian I Excavation Pulse mining lasers onto a destroyer.
If your Gallente Frigate level is at 4, you'll barely beat the Navitas (2 Miner II lasers and 1 Mining Laser Upgrade). The Navitas pulls ahead if you train Gallente Frigate to level 5. However, that training time is probably better spent on Cruiser or Mining Barge skills.
Plus, have you ever mined in a Destroyer with 5 lasers? Lots of attention and mouse clicking to keep from overfilling your cargo bay and loosing the advantage due to things just stopping. I'd stick with the Navitas until you can get into a Vexor or a Retriever. Don't buy the Procurer mining barge... believe it or not, the Navitas pulls in more ore (unless you're using a T2 strip miner with crystals, but with the skills required to do that, you'd better be in a bigger barge by then).
You want to get your Mining and Astrogeology skills to level 5. These both provide a 5% bonus per laser per level, no matter what ship you're in, and they're required at high levels for the barges anyway.
