Can one PvP solo in a Thorax or do you need a better ship for PvP. I am itching to do some PvP, but do not want to be a chump our there with a lame ship.
If Thorax is okay, any recommended setups?

thoarx is one of the best solo pvp cruisers in game, in my rax iv taken down pvp BC several times.
as for setups all you will ever need to know when setting up a rax will be int he ships setup post, contains many variations, but i would suggest sticking to blasters :)

i'm not sure about the skills, but i've fought quite a few thoraxes, and here's my thoughts on which modules you WILL need:
T2 Blasters T2 Medium NOS (x2 if possible)
Webber Warp Disruptor II (24km range) 10MN MWD Tracking disruptor maybe? (I'm not sure how many mid slots it has)
T2 or Corpum Medium Armor repper 800 or 1600 Plate EANM x2 or Nano's / Overdrives (Again, not sure how many slots this has)
You will want Kinetic or Explosive drones, something to "round out" your damage, so you get a good range of types of damage IMO.
Basically, everything tech 2, very good skills to back up your tanking / damage) and DONT neglect the shield skills (namely the skill to boost shield amount, and shield regen)
My opinion is my own, not of my corp or my alliance. If you have problems, we can have a "who can do L4 missions faster" duel >:) |

You don't know one of the most basic things about fitting this ship, and you're advising the OP to fit a multi-hundred-million ISK module on it?
800 or 1600mm plate, MWD/web/scram, and a NOS (doesn't have to be T2!) is good advice. As is blasters and explosive drones. However, you don't have to T2 the whole thing, but what you do need is a good sense of target selection. Don't try to "punch above your weight" until you have experience and confidence in your abilities.

Edited by: Johho Bulon on 04/07/2007 15:12:35 I like the Rax myself. However a Thorax is going to be somewhat skill dependant for fitting because of its PG and CPU and the ever present temptation to put Neutrons on it :) It could really do with having 4 mids, but you are stuck with three unless you fancy shelling out 70mil isk+ for the faction version.
Highs Modal Electrons x4 (or Ions if your PG allows, maybe T2s if you can) Medium Nos x1 (named is better)
Medium Cap Battery or Recharger 10MN MWD or AB depending on grid Webber or scram
Low Med Repper II EANM I/II x2 Armour Plate as big as PG will allow Backup sensor array. PVPing you are going to come across dampeners, jammers and so on fairly often, so it is good to have something that reduces your susceptibility to them. If you choose not to, then a good named mag stab will give you an extra 10% + hybrid turret damage and speed up the rof :D
Drones Hammerheads I or II depending on what your skills allow.
If you can afford it, and don't mind adding them to a basic cruiser a cap rig and pg rig, can help make your ship much more heavy hitting, as you can remove the cap battery/charger and add a tracking computer (helps to pop speedy frigs). A better choice might be a an ECM system because a lot of PVPers will have webs and scrams fitted, and may be able to hold you out of range, breaking their targeting for just a few seconds so that you can close to blaster range with your mwd or warp away can make all the difference in a tight fight. Even as it is the Rax is effectively a small BC and can tank relatively well. Just pick your battles carefully and you should be bringing the superior force to bear :)

I have seen Nos on several threads. Does this stand for Nosferatu?
Does it drain the capacitor of the other ship? Does it really help that much?

Without cap ships cant run modules; so cant repair armor; fire weapons (minmatar and missile ships excluded) etc.

I notice that know one usually discusses using shield extenders. Any reason for this?

Look at its stats
Short answer: Its Gallente
(Slightly) Longer answer: Far higher armor than shields. More low slots than midslots

the thing with the rax is you can get in it with just a handful of skills, however a highly skilled pilot can utterly destroy people when piloting a ship like this with high skills.

/me shrugs
sometimes using the best modules help with taking out pesky battleships + command ships in a cruiser

Edited by: anillation on 06/07/2007 14:54:13 Edited by: anillation on 06/07/2007 14:50:56 I have lower sp. (4mil and switched from caldari). The setup I have been using is: 5x named light ions (w/ antimatter) 1x 20k disruptor, 10mn mwd, small cap booster (150 charges loaded) sar II, 1600mm tungsten plate, 2x eanm, 1x exp hardener.
Setup I'm toying with now (more suicidal): 5x named heavy ions I (w/ antimatter) 1x 10mn mwd, 1 20k disruptor, 1x small cap booster 1x mar II, 2x eanm I, 1x exp hardener, 1x magstab
The last one I haven't really got to test to much yet. I hear if your drone skills are high a vexor is the way to go. Still training skills just got t2 drones

PVP is all about target selection, you can pvp in just about any ship in game and be succesful.
My advice, learn the names of all the ships out there and the bonuses they get before your scrammed and its to late.

Thorax is great. But some setups here make me wanna cry. If you go solo with a rax your (3!) med slots can only look like this:
1 x 10mn mwd 1 x web 1 x scrambler
Scram should be obvious. (i like 20km - but 2 points are also nice)
Without a webber you will miss certain targets due to tracking issues. Also nearly every target with mwd and every target with web+mwd will be able to get away from you because you can't slow him down. Chasing him around repeatedly is stupid in a ship that has limited cap like rax has.
And you need a mwd if you fit blasters. I cannot believe that people use ab+blasters. Have you people noticed blasters don't have awesome range?
With low skills (t2 small blasters) the following hi/low fitting can be quite effective:
his: 4 x light neutron blaster 2, 1 x med nos lows: 1 x small rep, 3 x hardener, 1600RT
Cap is always a problem but small blasters/repper don't use that much and the nos helps a bit. If you move up the skill ladder to med t2 blasters and awu you might wanna try:
5 x heavy electron t2
1 x 800RT, 1 x med rep, 1 x dmc, 2 x mfs 2 or 1 x eanm, 1 x mfs 2
Cap is a nightmare on this one. Basically its who dies first - your cap or your enemy? Personally i'd use med blasters on rax only in gang and then with injector. It's a personal choice - dishing out some heavy dmg can be nice too.
Drones i'd support the idea of explosive drones. I'd personally consider 2 x warrior, 2 x hobgoblin, 3 x valkyrie for solo. But of course 5 x meds do more damage which is also fine. ECM drones can be worth a try - just don't expect miracles. I personally always end up with combat drones - but its an option.
You'll have fun with this ship only make sure you forget about that extender thing.
Viable targets imo: All t1 frigs, assault frigs and t1 cruisers. Noob bcs can be approached with distinct confidence. Don't forget about haulers at the gate.
