I've just bought a Caracal ahead of me training the Caldari Cruiser skill, and was wondering what kind of weapons/shields it takes? Does it take the same Standard Missile Launchers as destroyers and frigates, or is there some sort of special big missile launcher for cruiser?
And what kind of shields should i get for it?
If anyone feels the need to give me a whole list of stuff to put on it, then keep in mind i only have 2.5 million ISK to spend.

Caracal - yay :)
I'd go for 5 Assault Missile Launchers. They use the missiles used in standards so no need to change there.
Shields - 1 Medium or even a large Shield Booster, 1 Extender and 3 NPC specific resists (assuming you are missioning ofc).
Lows - BCS & PDU's :)
Get named if you can or generic if you wanna save the iskies. -------

I'm a money hoarder, so i'll go with generic. One question though - what are BCS and PDU's?
Thanks for the info on the missile launchers. That was one of my main concerns.

It's a cruiser, cruisers take medium sized modules (Or if you're skilled, you might be able to put large stuff on it, but I wouldn't bother with that for now.).
Missiles aren't actually called "medium" missiles, but "heavy" missiles.
For cruisers, you have 3 missile launchers: Assault launchers - A cruiser sized version of a standard missile launcher. Fires quicker and has more capacity. Good for taking out frigs. Heavy launchers - Fires heavy missiles, good for cruiser sized targets. Heavy assault launchers - Fires heavy assault missiles, fast ROF, short range, kinda like bigger rockets.
Shields, etc. all medium.

BCS = Ballistic Control System, boost the rate of fire of launchers and damage of missiles. PDU = PDS = Power Diagnostic Systems, an all-around module to boost power grid, capacitor, shields, capacitor recharge rate and shield recharge rate. -- V.H.

EDIT: This is the nicest online community i've ever met. Very helpful people! :)

Train up Weapon Upgrade at least to lvl 4. It reduces the CPU need of your launchers.
You should also try to look at using Heavy Assault Launchers or Heavy Launchers. Heavy Missiles have better range than Standard Missiles. --- It have always fallen to a few to sacrifice for the good of many

Now I don't fly caldari cruisers yet but I would go for
HIGHS - x5 heavy missiles or x3 heavy missile and x2 assault missile launchers if you have fitting issues
MIDS - best med shield booster you can afford plus relevant shield hardners (active or passive depending on how well you can fit stuff again) for what you are fighting
LOWS - A BCS for sure and maybe a PDU as well...

Considering you only have 2.5M isk, my suggestion is to make sure you don't try to PvP with it yet, and stay away from lowsec until you have some more skills under your belt and some more ISK in your wallet. Remember the old addage "Don't fly what you can't afford to lose."
If you really want to go into lowsec, I'd suggest keeping a very close eye on frigates in the system. They may be a lower class ship, but if they're speed tanking they can beat you a lot easier then you'd think. One of my favorite targets when I'm pirating in my Rifter are Caracals, especially if they're fitted for rating or missions.

What? I killed my first victim when I only had like 600k sp, and was barely 5 days in the game...
I've also killed alot of people in my caracal.

That leaves alot to be imagined....
Solo? Enemy ship type? Enemy time played? High sec, low sec or 0.0?
As for a Caracal, go with heavy launchers.

I killed my first victim at only about 4 or 5 days played as well, but I was in a Rifter flying against a miner... details are important. If you're flying a cruiser with medium guns 1, heavy missiles 1 and you can't fit the appropriate mods, you're going to lose an expensive toy to someone flying a much cheaper, better fitted ship. I'm not saying he needs to have max relevant skills, just not to try and take on people in a ship that he doesn't have ANY relevant skills in yet.

Also, he only has 2.5M ISK, and it's a VERY bad idea to fly something you can't afford to lose.

So basically, don't fly anything you can't afford to lose, insure your ship, and most ppl I know have a dedicated mission-running ship. That way, if their chips are down, they can fall back on running missions to get more money with low risk of losing everything except your ibis. It's happened before, I helped someone who lost a BS on a L3 mission cuz they didn't know what they were doing, and had to start up all over again in a cruiser.
Re: Missiles: For L2's and below, you fight a lot of frigates. I personally would advise the assault launchers, fire standard missiles, and you'll kill more efficiently. If you must use heavies to kill all those frigates, maybe a target painter would help too.
You will greatly increase your effectiveness if you fit your missiles and hardeners for racial damage types. You should pick up the appropriate hardeners pretty quickly, or just buy some generic ones. They will help. Use the right ammo, and you will notice a difference immediately. Copy the npc damage notes from someone and keep in your in game notepad

Caracels are pretty much shyte unless used in a group and you're firing at range. As a solo hunter I can't see how you could beat anything with it unless you attacked someone completely clueless.
To the OP, if you plan on mission running with it keep it, it's great, just whack on 5 heavy missile launchers, a med shield booster plus mission specific hardners or instead use medium shield extenders and bcus in the lows., if you're planning on going into low sec to belt rat then you'll most likely die the minute someone sees you on the scanner and can be bothered attacking you, the caracel is paper thin with zip capacitor to maintain a tank.

I just setup a Caracal shield tank last night to do lvl3 missions and works pretty well. Although it was my first attempt at lvl3 missions i did come across a bunch of destroyers and 3 BC's, had to warp out 3 times to let shield recharge but was fine with that.
4x heavy launcher 1x light launcher
3x medium shield extender 1 1x larger shield extender 1
1x PDU
easy to setup on low skills and low budget.
