Would it be possible to get a GMT clock in the Eve bootstrap program. It is something easy and possible useful when the server say it will be up at a certain GMT time and if you had a clock just next to the server message it would be real easy to estimate when to try again.

Haha I just made a similar post. It sucks being in the good old USA west coast time zone and having no clue when the server comes back up.

Edited by: Sandra Jones on 21/07/2007 08:58:55 For those lesser educated (speak: american) of us:
Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is a term originally referring to mean solar time at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich in England. It is now often used to refer to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) when this is viewed as a time zone, although strictly UTC is an atomic time scale which only approximates GMT in the old sense. It is also used to refer to Universal Time (UT), which is the astronomical concept that directly replaced the original GMT.
you can find which timezone your in here
so finding out what it is for you is a very basic addition (while i know that your public schoolsystem sucks, im still sure that you learn addition in your very first school year - like we do in europe too)

Well, it would be a substraction for americans and they might even have to convert am/pm to 24 hour clock to get their head around it. Given that DT is early in the morning for them, that would require a trip to the nearest StarBucks for some brainfuel.
Anyway, I used to play SWG on an east coast server.I'm in GMT +1, east coast is gmt-5, then there's daylights saving that started at different days here and there, etc. Long story short, got tired of the math. So I got a cheap alarm clock, set it up next to my pc and set it to east coast time. Very convenient, when stuff is planned and such all it takes a glance to know when it starts, don't even have to have the pc turned on.

I guess it might be useful. But it is not really hard to get your local time and calculate it (I'm at GMT -6 here). There are also sites that give you the time in different areas:
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/
Check London time for GMT.

This would be very, very nice. Not only is Americaland not on GMT or anything close to it, we also have daylight savings time...but not in all states...and sometimes we change when DST happens...and its all really confuzzling. _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

London time is BST (British Summer Time). Currently 1 hour ahead of GMT.

No need to be an ass.
Alot of us Americans know what GMT is.
EST == GMT -5hours CST == GMT -6 hours MST == GMT -7 hours PST == GMT -8 hours
And as for european public schools being so much better. Talk to some of the people in the poorer parts of england(Say : Cornwall?)) and they'll tell you quite a different story.

no, its not:
11 - (-6) = 17 WRONG 11 + (-6) = 5 RIGHT
substraction when calculating time realtive to UTC is used when converting local time to UTC, not UTC to local time. Math can be so beautiful.

Why did you call it UTC instead of UT
Don't call americans uneducated, because there are a ton of uneducated people in every country. Considering the number of high-tech gadgets America has brought the world, and has done for the scientific world sometimes alone, I wouldn't be making statements like you have made.
Some of the largest companies on this planet were founded in America, and they have brought yourself and the rest of the worlds gadgets you use everyday.
Just to name a few people that brought gadgets you use everyday: Alexander Graham Bell - Inventor of the telephone Dr. Martin Cooper - Inventor of the mobile telephone ( aka cell phone ) Thomas Alva Edis - Light bulb Benjamin Franklin - Do I really need to explain what he brought to this modern world? Henry Ford - This is another person, do I really need to explain what you most likely drive every single day? Albert Einstein - He did his work in America, without America's support he might not have been able to do his research. Stuart W. Cramer & Thomas Midgley, Jr - One basicly coined the term "air conditioning" the other created the first chlorofluorocarbon gas, Freon which something you use everyday. Steve Job and Bill Gates - Home Computers with user friendly Operating Systems. * I am putting Steve Jobs and Bill Gates because lets be honest they did bring us user interfaces in one way or another that has made computers 1000% more user friendly. Clearly they were not alone in this process, but Microsoft and Apple Inc were the leaders and still are in the operating system industry. Before Apple OS and Windows/DOS operating systems were really not friendly to the normal everyday person.

Alexander Graham Bell - Inventor of the telephone
Born in Scotland, migrated to Canada in 1870, to US in 1871, invented the telephone in 1876, became a US citizen in 1882. Thus the telephone was invented by a Scotsman living in the states.

Henry Ford - This is another person, do I really need to explain what you most likely drive every single day?
Henry didn't invent the automobile. Henry's genius was the invention of the production line that brought previous expensive products within reach of the masses.

Albert Einstein - He did his work in America, without America's support he might not have been able to do his research.
He published the 4 papers he's best known for in 1905. He moved to the US in 1932. A large part of his time in the US was spent in various organizations opposing racism and pro zionist movements.

Airco is more or less development of the refrigerator, not really an invention. Freon has been banned for a while now since it causes holes in the ozone layer.

The majority of windows features were first available on MacOS. Bill Gates is a savvy business man but he certainly doesn't belong in a list of inventors without some hefty footnotes. I do agree on Steve Jobs.
Out of all the US citizens you could have picked for a contribution to the world, you kind of picked poorly.
For instance, the Wright brothers, Robert Oppenheimer, Charles Lindbergh and Edwin Hubble.
I do agree it's silly to call the whole of a population uneducated. I also think it's silly to list the US's contributions to the world and getting most of them wrong. Besides that, a large section of those contributions were thanks to WWII dislocating a large number of people and the US being the place to be at that time. But then we get into the discussion of what makes it a US contribution, the money or the brain that did the work.

Edited by: WhitePhantom on 23/07/2007 00:03:06 Fine I made some poor choices, but those people even if they came from another country, did alot of good work within America. Without the support of Americans, where would those people be exactly?
I knew 2 of those choices were not american born, and I should have been more clear when I said Henry Ford invented the automobile because clearly he was able to bring it to the masses. I still believe Bill Gates to be worthy to be in some of the great inventors of our time, even if one might give co-credit to things he brought the world. He took operating systems, made them so easy to use, just about anyone could use them. Even if his ideas were based on user-interface design seen in earlier versins of Apple OS, he made them easier to use, of course that comes at a cost which is known by tech-savy people.
I just dislike when people show hate towards americans for silly reasons. Considering the only reason our education system is strained is because of the fact, the believe that everyone should get a basic education. We even educated young adults who are not even suppose to be here, so before somebody attacks America for what they believe to be uneducated people, give us an example of a country that has a better system that does the samething.

And honestly, I find it offensive that you are ignorant enough to make a generalization about an entire country (@ The person who referenced America as being less educated).
Also, just because some one requests a feature like this, does not mean we are to stupid to figure out what time zone we are in, or how to do it our selfs for that matter - it is just making it easier / faster for people who are not used to converting time in EST (Or whatever Timezone they are in - I am EST) to UTC / GMT in their head (And there for do it slower) or do not want to be bothered with it.

Discussing how Americans or non-americans are stupid may get this thread closed and posts removed.
Back on topic.
I think Eve is UTC, not GMT, and only visible difference is daylight saving really (not atomic whatever). GMT has daylight saving (I think), UTC does not, Eve time does not (if it had, difference in my country wouldn't vary between +1 and +2). So its apparently UTC. I'm not absolutely sure of above but I think it is so.
Proposed clock would be cool and useful. Tiny downtime "calendar" downloaded from small separate server (including planned extended downtimes and planned time to fix on unexpected downtimes) would be very nice too.

no you are wrong, GMT as well als UTC dont have a Daylight Saving Time Offset in it, Daylight Saving Time works by switching the Timezone, so Great Britain for Example who have UTC (often misscalled (for historical reasons) GMT) switch to BST during the Summer, Central Europe in CET Timezone switches for the Summer to CEST etc. Eve stays on UTC the whole year.

Well, those post show that either you are still running on XP... In Vista there's an easy solution: Gadgets! You can have more than one clock in the sidebar and set them to different time zones...
So, get rid of that old (probably illegally copied) Windows XP of yours and get Windows Vista. It's quite cheap if you get the OEM version. Plus, if more people get the x64 version, you force the producers to code x64 drivers. There's no difference in the price, and most programs run in Vista anyway, if it's not a program from 20 years ago...

You're french aren't you?
Funny that you try to explain how Europe uses time zones and daylight savings time, since they are american ideas you guys borrowed. The railroad companies came up with time zones so that they could print an accurate schedule. Before time zones every town based noon off of the sun's zenith locally. And who ever came up with DLST needs to be shot. It's a stupid idea.
Here in the US, we don't change time zones. We just move our clocks forward or backward an hour. Yay for europe trying to make telling time even more confusing.
Oh yeah, GMT/Zulu time, is always the same, reguardless of whatever name or local adjustment political leaders want to give it.

there where timezones before that, for example in the uk and their colonies, just the system that is used today was proposed first by some american railroad guy. and btw, its DST not DLST.

wrong.
