Is there a chat channel in-game for people looking for a gang? If there is not someone should start one.

People in the know tend to be intensely suspicious of people offering gang invites, as there are tricks you can use to involve gang members in your wars (usually fake wars just for ganking gang members), getting them ganked when they don't expect it.
Also, since Eve is so large there would need to be dozens of channels. People usually just ask in Local when they need help.

Try to look for a fairly active corporation in your area and see if you can 'buddy' with them. Join their ranks and gang with corpmates. The recent wave of the age old scheme to lure people to certain doom via the gang system have made people wary for joining any gang. No matter how trustworthy the inviter looks on first sight.

Unlike other games, "Pick up Groups" in EVE are a dangerous and inadvisable thing to get involved with. Because it is a PvP game, that allows non-consensual PvP anywhere, you need to be careful who you trust. There is always someone out there willing to exploit your ignorance of the game mechanics, so it's best to be as careful as possible.
When you need a group in EVE it's all about having friends. The best thing here is to get into a decent corporation that does what you like to do. PvE, Manufacturing, PvP - There's a corp out there somewhere that will do it.

Ah, I suppose you're right, I hadn't thought of that. Good point though. I guess Eve is like RL, you woudln't just go up to someone on the street and invite them over to your house. Anyway, thanks for the advice and help.

No, you have it backwards; you go over to said persons house, and while they are in the other room, you steal their stereo. This is EVE, screw them before they screw you.

..you steal their stereo. They catch you, and throw a punch. You shoot them, then claim self defense and CONCORD lets you go.
