I've only just started on my pirating journey by spending time in a 0.4 system. I am confused about something regarding the flagging system.
I flew back to the insystem station from a belt and there was a red flashing pirate in an Ishtar sat outside the station. I checked his info and he was -9.9 sec status.
My question is, I thought station sentries would attack him?
Also, if I had of targetted and engaged him, I know the sentries would not attack me as he is a red flashy, but would the sentries attack him if he fought back??

if you have a sec status below -5, you will ALWAYS flash red, meaning you are always KOS. If he attacked first, the sentries would shoot. If you did, they would not, and he could freely attack you back.

If they were flashing at first due to outlaw status or killrights sentries will ONLY engage if THEY agress (and you are not considered outlaw or they have killrights on you). If you agress ANYONE they are allowed to defend themselves. ___________________________

also if they're below -5 they'll only be attacked by sentries automatically in .5 sec or higher. ______________________

Not the sentries, just the faction police. Fear the Ibis of doom!

Sentries only shoot you if you have committed a crime no matter what system you're in.
And yeah as others have said if you attack an outlaw first then they can return fire without sentries attacking them.
