There are some things that make me so angry, that we should return to Victorian punisments such as the birch for some crimes.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/6916745.stm
I just can't believe how low some parts of society have become some times, and I think some people just frankly need some sense beaten into them.

Seeing as that would probably count as manslaughter, we can probably just lock the little ****s up. Beating them with a stick doesn't seem appropriate in this day and age. --------

Quote: Chav or Charv/Charver even Chavster (male) and Chavette (female) ('ch' pronounced as in chair) is a mainly derogatory slang term in the United Kingdom for a subcultural stereotype fixated on fashions derived from American Hip-Hop fashions and stereotypes such as gold jewellery and designer clothing combined with elements of working class British street fashion. Chavs are generally considered to have no respect for society, and to be ignorant or unintelligent. The term appeared in mainstream dictionaries in 2005.

Unfort. this is a very common sight throughout the UK now, "Yob rule", no point locking them up, they'll be out within a few months due to over crowding. I'm more in favour of allowing non chav like people the chance to buy a 12 bore repeater and a box of cartridges. --------------------------------

I'm also inclined to make punji stick pits around the inside of my garden to stop them steaming through.

As a firefighter, have you come across the gas can in the car trap yet? Its a real nasty thing to do, because the gas canister looks like someone in the car, the firefighter have to go in and check.

We need a different approach. Locking yobbos up short term or even for a long time doesn't do them any good. They just associate with more scumbags and become "better" at being scum.
We need some sort of short sharp shock. Somehow instil a sense of discipline and self esteem. If they won't tow the line and cooperate, then we need to be able to punish them with force.
They show people no mercy, we should begin to show them none.

Im all for beating the little ******* with a stick. Hell ill do it if you pay me a good wage and keep me supplied with bamboo.
In all seriousness though. Something does need to be done, this is getting out of hand, unfortunately theres too many prissy little ****s in the world these days that try to enforce human rights bull**** if you beat the little ****s senseless. Prison is a joke, prison sentences are pitiful and prisons themselves are more like holiday camps then, well, prisons. Overcrowding... how ammusing, its a goddammed prison, cram the ******* in till they cant take a **** without it soaking 4 other people. Not humane? Tough ****, their serving time for a crime.
The world needs sorting out, I think its about time we stop people from commiting crimes by making them too ******* scared of the consequences.

I still think we should turn antartica into a world wide prison. All you would need for guards is a few ships to watch for floaters.
wouldn't need to land anything, just airdrop suplies to them and let the bastards build their own shelters and services.
This would make people think twice about commiting a crime

Is there a lot of crime directed at the fire services while working? What else do they do?

Having met many chavs before, I know that there are some of them who are in fact, quite intelligent, and removed from their peers, can change completely. If they are amongst people of the same age who frown upon their actions, then they quickly change their ways in order to be accepted again. Of course, as soon as they go back to their old friends, it all starts again and they go back to being the same old chavs every knows.
Obviously part of the solution is to isolate them from each other, and have the mix with more likeable people instead. This way, by the time they get back together, they praise each other for the good deeds they do, rather than the bad ones.
Of course, that isn't really an easy solution to use, and doesn't work for all of them, so it's some kind of proper, non-***** punishment that is needed. What needs to happen on this front is to create some kind of fear of the law, and the police. At the moment the police in the UK seem to be unable to act very much against the chavs, because they are almost all quite young. Because of this, the chavs have no fear of the police, and the police become even less effective.
It's all a terrible social circle of peer pressure and poor education.

Yeh lets bring back corporal punishment because that use to work really well... Because no one committed murder in the days when you could be hanged for it in Britain...
Making tougher punishments isn't the answer to getting rid of crime, it only works to a point.
Removing the factors that cause people to turn to crime does though. Its not a coincidence that most youth crime is from the bottom of the social and wealth ladder, how often do you see Eton boys running around stabbing people?
In a capitalist society someone has to be at the bottom for us to be at the top. So if the bottom layer turns anti-social so be it.
Anyway kids being ****s is nothing new, just suck it up and get on with life.
Thats my view on things at least.

... That'll be Capital Punishment you're talking about there.
I do actually agree with your comment about punishment, "it only works to a point". However we do need a carrot AND a stick. The carrot alone is no good.
Most of the UK "police, camera, action" documentaries I've seen on TV show a lot of the young chavs have no fear at all of the police, and annoyingly the police often even seem to try to be nice and joke with them while they are taking the ****!

I agree, currently where i live some people don't have running water in their taps because of flooding, so water tanks are supplying homes currently. Idiots have been opening these tanks, and putting bleach into them, that water is the only water available at this current time due to flooding.

On a related note, in the aftermath of hurricane Katerina (sp?) in the southern US, rescue workers were shot at by looters. I recall seeing (with great satisfaction) the National Guard going in and 'clearing up' the problem (and I'm a liberal Canadian who generally disapproves of guns and violence).
When society breaks down, it gets pretty freaky.
It really is a pity there isn't a modern version of Aus to send the truly incorrigible to.
I recall a quote from a movie: 'Crime cannot be tolerated; criminals thrive on the indulgence of society.'
Gangs build up their own micro society where they define the rules. At some point, the society at large has to either abandon the area (some of inner-city America in ex.), or act in draconian ways. Sadly, both are abhorrent to a 'civilized' society.
I'm really not sure what an effective solution is. __________________________________________________ FOLD. The Ultimate PVP. It really is Us vs. Them. clicky |

I don't think you see the point of prison... its supposed to offer a chance to reform and become a better person not torture...

Where this to have taken place in the US, they would have been arrested and charged in the death of the guy that the medics were not able to get to. Allowing anyone to get in the way of medical response teams and not reacting quickly and with the full force of the law is a complete disservice to the citizens of the city and society as a whole. It's not an issue of bringing back a style of punishment. Toss them in jail for 10-20 years and their friends will get the idea that doing a repeat is not healthy for their future. |

And you wonder why us folks in the US are so protective of our right to bear arms. The sound of a 12 gauge Browning shotgun racking alleviates this sort of problem quick-like.
Look on the bright side: about a decade ago, Charlotte, NC's South Boulevard was so bad, they had to issue the paramedics sidearms. The gang-bangers would shoot at each other, and as soon as someone was hit, they'd stop. They would then wait for the ambulance to arrive, shoot the paramedics (guaranteeing that anyone shot would bleed and die where they lay), and then have it out with each other. You're not quite at that level of messed up yet. Count your blessings.

Technically manslaughter. The UK is getting pretty bad. I keep expecting to hear stories of escalating vigilante crimes. I can only imagine the state this country will be in in 10years. If you think the kids today are bad, wait till you see the horrible creatures they spawn.

Yeh it's manslaughter, but they were obstructing an ambulance. Flashy lights, sirens etc, they damn well knew what could (and did) happen.
