I know the dedicated pie-rat answer to this question will be : lock, engage, pod/ransom! I am more curious as to the casual pie-rat/anti-pie (who could be anti-pie its so tasty)/other combative low sec dwellers answers.
Do you lock everyone you encounter in lowsec out of general paranoia/caution/prudence regardless if you plan on engaging or not?
followup: (In your opinion,) Does this tend to escalate hotilities faster/more often than a non-targeting policy?
2nd followup: If you are locked in lowsec by a non flashy/someone you dont suspect of being a pie, do you return the lock, escalate the hostilities, run, something else?

1) If I'm getting locked in the first place...its because either a) I want to be. or b) I screwed up and wasn't watching local carefully enough.
2) I always lock back, because hey, if he shoots first.. no problem. If I think I can take him, and its worth the sec hit. I'll even fire first.

Yes.
Followup: Yes. As for the second, I'd cheer him for the remote repair. As I dont suspect him of being a pie - it must be a blue.

You said "pie-rat," so I'm obligated to disagree with everything you say, and call into question your mother's honor.
And by the way, I rule you.

Generally if i can take a target or group of targets i will lock everything there is. You'll be surprised how mnany will engaged. Recently had a harbinger engage my astarte in jump range of a high sec gate, a myrm engage my astarte in insta dock range of a station, and others. Always worth a lock.

yeah, always worth locking people, esp when they randomly open fire on you meaning you can whip them without sentrie aggro.
its amazing just how many players fail to take down someone with a decent setup, even when wsaid person is tanking sentries themselves

I only lock when im in warp disrupter range. Sometimes I undock and a carebear launches drones and locks me. Something rarley happens, often waiting for the other person to shoot first or waiting for the other person to dock/warp first because you don't wan't to apear weak or something. :P
