Cloaking seems to be becoming a controversial issue lately in some places. People are using it excessively and sometimes in conjunction with logging tactics to ôhave their wayö in enemy territory. These cloakers have become something akin to submarines of WWI who were almost uncontested threats in enemy waters.
Now the fact that cloaking allows for new tactics is great for EVE, however is it good if there is no way to counter that threat?
How realistic is it to have entire fleets being able to cloak for infinite amounts of time while nearby enemy fleets patrol and hunt for them? Further, how much fun is anyone having if there is no cat and mouse, no chase and be chased but instead just hide and à. See who has more patience and time to wait it out?
The truth is that cloaking for scouts makes great sense but cloaking in fleet actions is boring for both sides.
I do not suggest taking away ships current abilities to equip cloaking devices. What I suggest is limiting their use or at least giving the other side more equipment to hunt the invisible foe.
In WWII destroyers increasingly were equipped to counter the annoying and deadly submarine threats. Without the anti-submarine aspect of that war, things would have been vastly different. Likewise, without anti-cloaking ships and equipment in EVE just means the future will be more dangerous, annoying and boring for just one groupà those who donÆt cloak.
Some may say, well then everyone should cloak, why punish the cloakers if it works so well? But think about that for a moment, do we want everyone to start using cloaking and everyone just sneaks around, picking off people here and there?
EVE needs to open the doors to a new tactic and something that will make the space more of a fun, action packed cat and mouse chase. I propose anti-cloaking equipment for frigate and destroyer size ships that way fleets will have more reason to have small ships to seek out and hunt cloaked ships.
The only thing I would add is that smaller ships would be much much harder to seek out than bigger size cloaked ships. That way scouting is not ruined since it is important part of the game.
Just my two cents.

No no no. Cloaks are fine as they are.
No tools are needed to find cloakers.
If there is a cloaker in ur 0.0 system so what. If he's afk which is most ppls problem, HES AFK, he cant attack u, smack in local, he cant do anything. If hes waiting to ambush some loner miner, the miner deserves it.
In the system I hang out in, in 0.0, we've had a arazu sit there for weeks. What did we do......... EXACTLY AS WE NORMALLY DID. We mined, ratted and larked about exactly as normal no problem. If u cant muster some guards to protect ur miners, or form up a gang to respond when he attacks you dont deserve to be in 0.0. Im sick of all the nerf cloak threads

Edited by: Anluv Matar on 28/07/2007 01:10:52 It is not a nerf thread, it is a suggestion for a counter to cloaking in the game. Cloaking is great and the current tactics for using cloak is fine too. However it would add a new element into the game by having anti-cloaking devices on small ships in a fleet that use them.
Kind of like anti-submarine frigates and destroyers.

Fact is, if somebody manages to cloak and get away, then all power to them. I tend to congratulate anyone who does manage to slip past a gate camp in a ship not designed for cloaking.
Cloaking's a powerful tool, yes... but let's remember that cloaking allows a ship to do nothing other than not be seen. you can't lock, shoot, or (in most cases) warp... and you can't even move quickly. Cloaking means the most you can do is hide....
how is that powerful? ***

Its not a direct nerf but once cloakers can be found, they will be found with ease, so there is no point to cloaks in the end unless you just use for travel. Since any spies will be quickly found (if u make the chances low, alliances will get spys/afk's with mass of numbers of scanners)

In the early 20th century most naval officers dismissed the submarine for the same reasons, they did not realize its potential. So over the following years as submarines became a threat with new tactics, surface forces were not prepared and had no counter to submarine warfare.
A single cloaker with no plan is not a threat, it is just an annoyance. An entire fleet of ships that cloak moving through enemy territory is a very big threat but also very annoying since there is no way to counter against it if all it does is hide and wait for hunters to leave. Sometimes cloakers go afk for hours. They know nobody can find them since the game really has no device like that. But it would be more fun if there were.
It is not cloaking that I question. It is the games lack of a counter to cloaking. I simply suggest we give players an option for equipment that would allow for more ability to seek and destroy cloaked ships. Make the anti-cloak equipment expensive and a drain on the ship so that only small ships dedicated to anti-cloak operations can use it. But give people a way to keep cloakers something to think about instead of untouchable indefinately.

Ok the last bit is pointless because it comes down to spamming loads of these "anti-cloaker" ships/modules to find the spy. Who cares if the module/ships has no dps or whatever, the BATTLESHIPS ETC IN GANG WHICH FOLLOW IT will easily kill any ships they find. Also i dont know where u get this notion of large fleets of cloaked ships, it simply doesnt happen.

You are asking a question if it is realistic for an opponents to be cloaked from an enemy. This is a whoely realistic part of modern combat and indeed combat throughout history. Cloaking adds so much to the game and in fact will add to the cat and mouse as you call it. In fact your last sentence in the paragraph sums up many of the battles that have taken place, two oppononents placed in a location seeing who can hold out the longest. www.eve-players.com |
