Originally by: Thermodynamics skill description Advanced understanding of the laws of thermodynamics. Allows you to deliberately overheat a ship's modules in order to push them beyond their intended limit. Also gives you the ability to frown in annoyance whenever you hear someone mention a perpetual motion unit.
1) That's unexpected, especially since I haven't seen a skill with jokes like that in their description before. 2) I... don't get it. *Douses Thorax in flameproof paint before hopping in*

The perpetual motion unit violates the first law of thermodynamics.

From wikipedia:
"In thermodynamics, the first law of thermodynamics is a statement of the conservation of energy for thermodynamic systems, and is the more encompassing version of the conservation of energy. In short, the law of conservation of energy states that energy can not be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another, such as when electrical energy is changed into heat energy."
The joke is that the first law of thermodynamics prohibits a perpetual motion device from existing, since its imposable for any machine to not bleed out energy in the form of friction, heat, or even radioactive decay, however small the amount of energy loss into another form of energy would eventually slow and stop any such machine, even if it took eons.
Wow... I posted in two really geekey threads today and its not even past lunchtime.

As the old joke goes:
0. There is a game 1. You can't win 2. You can't break even 3. You can't quit
Sounds like EVE.
Sadly EVE is probably the only MMO is which the playerbase can "get" a thermodynamics joke.

aaaaaaah... took me 10 minutes wikipedia-ing before i got it.
perpetual motion unit is an "infinite-machine" (which is supposed to be able to run forever on a limited amount of energy) and thermodynamic states that an "infinite-machine" is impossible because some of the energy will always be "lost"
not harder than that

Edited by: Teani on 28/07/2007 16:28:12 Actually its the second law of thermo , even if u negate friction etc , then you need a hot and cold "tank" within the system , ie u canŠt take warmish water , extract the heat use it to power a boat. See how heat pumps work! I found the joke quite funny i must say Signature Your signature exceeds the 24000 byte limit on the forums -Darth Patches |

Warping is not moving faster than the speed of light, it is the bending of space so that you can travel from a to b faster.

I dont think you move very fast when warping. Its more like you "bend" space and make the distance short..I think?

You move slowly relative to the warp bubble you've created, but that warp bubble moves at several times the speed of light relative to everything else. - The game is not the problem. The problem is that you are not adapting to the game.
