Edit: Let me put that another way: If Sanrio made Hello Kitty Online In Space we wouldn't quit for that either.
So you are basing all your predictions on the fact that WOW is so lame?
No, I am basing them on that there is no connection between Starcraft Online and what appeals about Eve.
Other than the space part and the rich background that would allow factional warfare? Oh wait...
Factional warfare is a very recent addition and wasn't what drew the majority of us to Eve. Furthermore WoW has factional warfare and it sucks because it's badly implemented. That leaves the fact that it's in space. Nope, I don't think that's what Eve is about either. ----- I'll be in my pod |

TBH I was expecting tabula rasa to be a game I would play, Sci-fi mmo combined with FPS style twitch action, cool yeah?
No. Tabula rasa is utterly pointless...grouping with other players, everyone feels like an NPC, only to kill mobs for loot (which doesn't really do anything) ad nauseum, nothing is even remotely challenging, the professions are a joke, and the PvP is...uhhh...well utterly pointless sums the entire game up really well. there's nothing there. Nobody I asked in the Beta could give me an answer either, just a cynical 'hmmm, grind loot for epeening' reply. It's a shame, I followed the progress of the game for a while and it's evident nobody actually knows what to do with it.
The point is Sci-fi does not make an mmo good, lasers and spaceships are just pixels; the idea behind why the game exists does - it's gameplay - after playing the endless split-second PvP of guild wars and the well...intimacy, hands-on human interaction of eve, any game that makes me grind against endless mobs of AI routines is just unbearably soul destroying, the endless possibilty of human conciousness VS the limited certainty of an NPC. I get this out-of-body experience and I ask my self 'what is the ******* point of this you idiot, stop playing it, you're better than this'.
I can't see blizzard deviating from their WoW method, sadly, if they were to make a starcraft online.
And for what it does, WoW isn't such a bad game.

Looking at the Starcraft3 site, it's nothing more than a version of Starcraft with central servers and leader boards.
To start looking like a serious contender against EvE, an MMO would need: Player driven economy Time-based skill training 10k+ simultaneous users online 50k+ players in a non-sharded universe Non-instanced dungeons/encounters Game environment where more 'detail' can be introduced without expanding land-mass (or) Come-up with a totally unique concept.
Without these things, they may capture market share (or grow the market like WOW has done), but I don't believe they would cut into EvE player base in any significant way.
While no-one comes up with a totally unique concept, I don't see the other contenders for a while. Particularly not on planet-surface-based games, where it's only possible to expand or add detail in 2 dimensions.

No - 9 milion boxes sold, wich they call subscribers. Marketing.
I left WoW some 6 or so months ago. Tried Vanguard, GW and ended up in EVE. At first it was a SHOCK !
While in WOW, like all Blizz games, you hust sit at youre keyes and can start doing whatever it is you would like to without even checking manual, EVE is 180 degrees diferent. Everything is complicated and has many factors to look into before you do just about anything.
And that ladies and gents is WoWs and Blizzards alike strongest point - ITS SIMPLE ! Well simple to start, WoW is mostly PVE game ( PVP is laughble compared to EVE )and it takes much time, dedication, exploration, research and frustration to play end game content. So all of you that never got to end game in WoW - you realy dont know what youre talking about. It would be same for to to talk about apropriate use of a Titan as mining machine ...
I had great time in WoW. It was my first MMO and as great Blizz fan from before - PVE content was exciting as well as new branch of gaming - MMO. As with all things that dont evolve - WoW has become big, slow and utterly uniteresting from expansion forward. Great grind fest.
World of Starcraft will without a doubt be much like WoW. Simple to play, difficult to master with milions of fanatic fans.
Will that endanger EVE - as both games are space based ?
I would say yes to a certain degree. Players like me that havent been playing EVE for years will probably migrate. After all - when Blizz speaks other MMO devs stop and litsen. When PVE becomes boring and PVP is nothing more then geind for gear while watching TV, in order to do better DPS in PVE - we will come back to EVE and have good time killing someone.
BTW - I know that most EVE players look down on WOW as whole and WOW players. Well now ladies and gents, if PVE is not youre cup of tea thats fine, but dont tell me WOW is easy to play ! Boss encounters were not even close to easy and it took lot of TS / Vent cooridination and every class to do its job and do it well. There was little or no margin for error. So dont look down on something you didnt try. ( Not talking about 14 day trial :P )

No, because instead of having realistic-looking ships they'd have abhorrent cartoonish monstrosities which would completely destroy the suspension of disbelief.
On the plus side, they could call it "Earth and Beyond 2".

I heard somewhere that when the Eve server reaches 40-50,000 concurrent users, there is no amount of technology you can through at the problem, the code will just not be able to handle the number of db/server transactions. Ofc, you can hear may things many of which can mean very little.

No offense but the topic is just kind of stupid.
WOW and if Blizzard released a Starcraft version cater to a entirely different player type than does Eve.
People play Eve because there are real consequences and a real "living" economy/political sub-games.
I can't see too many WOW players who raided for 10 weeks straight enjoying their character being killed and half their prized inventory items being destroyed while the others going to the person that killed them.
EVE is an MMO for people who prefer a little pain in their game.

Well, that's about what I think also. The graphics are good looking yet this game looks awfully cartonish if not totally childish. The main market targetted by this game are 15 years old and below IMO.

That information is fake since it usually takes credit card information as the "player" and often all the information is filled out by the account holder. So, consider that a fantasy and if you play WOW you will understand WHY and HOW anyone can assume that WOW has a younger player base.

EVE developers cannot be complacent. Just because they have continually expanded in the past couple of years does not guarantee growth in the future.
The biggest boost to EVE subscriptions was in the 6 months after SOE's NGE expansion to SWG. There simply at the time was no real alternative for a space mmo other than to come to EVE.
Thus if a suitable space genre game came out that was not associated with SOE (STO will be SOE affiliated), then there is a danger that some or even many of that group might leave EVE. Not all would.
Blizzard has a great marketing strategy. It is much like McDonald's. McDonald's doesn't make the best burger, they never have. However their marketing made them the big burger powerhouse they are today. WoW is no the best MMO in my opinion. SWG prior to the CU and NGE was superior. Blizzard's marketing would probably attract a large amount of the new players, which means not only would you possibly lose a segment of the existing population but you would also have fewer numbers coming in.
It wouldn't kill EVE though, and undoubtedly some of those that initially tried Starcraft Online would return or possibly play both games.
The problem that could really hurt is if there was another big scandal involving the developers or volunteers that erupted at the same time of a Starcraft Online or other major space MMORPG. It would give a place for players to express their displeasure and more would leave EVE.
EVE really has been hampered in growth primarily by the developers themselves and by hardware constraints. The developers need to make sure to keep their noses clean, as do the volunteers. Continued scandal has hurt the games growth. It could be catastrophic if it continued and other viable options were out there for space.
The second problem is that the technology has not kept pace with what the developers have wanted. I am not convinced the next round of hardware upgrades will help either. It is getting to the point that growth is limited by technological constraints and if there is not some great technological breakthrough then the only way EVE can maintain its current growth is to shard. I know the devs and some veterans don't want to admit that, but it is a major hurdle to maintaining growth. The current system can barely deal with what we have.
Thus the question is not simple, as it depends on more factors than Starcraft Online itself. It would have the potential in a perfect storm scenario to severely cripple EVE's future growth and possibly ultimately doom the game. Outside of a perfect storm scenario then although it would have an impact of probably a loss of 20-25% of subscriptions it would not mean the end.

Now I don't want to be mistakenly badged with the "omg WoW-fonboi" here, but I can't abide factual inaccurary like this. How these 9 million active accounts are broken down into actual players and gold farmers/macroers is a matter for a different debate.

i'll give you a few hints. - the 28 years is based on a survey from a respectable source, and not from credit card age. - the 27 years for eve, I don't know, maybe credit card age, who knows ? I certainly don't.

Alright so a pointless grind of levels to an endgame cartoonish looking fashion show and grind for constantly better items entertains an older and more mature audience than EVE. Of course the one survey was infallible and you are indeed correct that everyone that plays EVE is younger and WOW indeed attracts the older players.

So you doubt WoW has 9 million subscribers? So I should doubt that EVE has 200k subscribers?
If Blizzard were to make a new game it would be different I believe *cough* Diablo *cough*. Anyways, all Blizzard has to do to destroy EVE is to include hardcore PvP. Now there are rumours about a Diablo MMORPG aswell, just as there are rumours about everything else, who knows.
But Blizzard is the leading company in the MMORPG field and they have what it takes to make whatever be a success. ALL Blizzard games has been success, I wonder why?
So if World of StarCraft were to be made? It would probably be good and steal subscribers from all over. EVE would sink as it still would have problems with lag and boring POS warfare.

WOW has about 9.5m subscribers now if the subscriptions have risen at a constant pace or risen. There is a large percentage of gold farmers.

Sorry but people play EVE because its EVE. Blizzard is very successfull, but they copy themselves in every game they make. If you dont like wow, its safe to say you wont like starcraft or diablo online either.
Blizzard would never go for the kind of pvp you have in EVE with real losses, because it will cause too many whines. Just look at how they crippled the pvp in wow on pvp servers, even when it doesnt have any real consequences other than a 30 sec corpse run. EVE survives because it offers something different and sticks to it. And no its not just the sci-fi theme.
World of starcraft would compete with world of warcraft, not really with EVE. Blizzard always follows their standard template for a game.
