The missiles/guns thing from both sides:
I have good missile skills DPS wise (heavy launcher spec to 4, rapid launch 5, warhead upgrades 5) and I have perfect gunnery skills with all the spec skills at 4 (of the ones that I use).
I have to say, I like missiles better. No tracking, no cap, no real range issues (within scram range, most of my missiles fly twice as far as I can scram/fight, even with my Lachesis).
By being able to switch damage types and do **exactly** the same base damage, regardless of damage type, I get much more effective DPS out of missiles, and missiles flat out ignore all the issues of turrets.
I can even use FoFs in a pinch if I'm ECMed, which I've done a few times with limited success. But it beats not being able to do *anything* if you're ECMed and use turrets. Missiles have no missile specific EW like turrets do (Tracking Disruptors). No, Defenders don't count.
I love my launchers on my Lachesis. Love them to death. It's what makes that ship as good as it is. If it were fit like the Arazu, with fewer launcher slots, or even with all turret slots, it would be junk.
With the Arazu, DPS is crap, range is crap (you have to sacrifice range for DPS with guns, not so with missiles) tracking is crap (again, no range unless you're using rails and spike). Etc. etc. etc.
It's horrible. The Lachesis stomps all over the Arazu in DPS. And why? Launchers. If the Arazu had 3x launcher slots, it would be AWESOME. You could MWD and orbit all you wanted. Your missiles would still hit. You can change damage types and focus on the weakest resist. You could hit from 50-60km for FULL DAMAGE, instead of having to downgrade your DPS for range.
Did I mention that missiles don't take cap? 3x 250mm T2 rails with Antimatter and 3x Magstab IIs in the lows for max DPS (because the Arazu has such poor DPS) absolutely crushes it's cap. It's just not sustainable, even with cap rigs and a mid slot wasted on a cap mod.
This is just one clear example of where two relatively similar ships with very similar capabilities are *completely different* from a combat/dps perspective.
Another perfectly good example is the Ferox. It has gun slots. But no one ever uses them. It's far better to use launchers that are capless, can change damage types, no tracking, etc. Than to bother with rails or blasters on it.
If I could fit 7x unbonused launchers on my Brutix I would. You bet your ass I would. All that cap-free DPS would be a godsend.
