Seems to have some other stuff as well, thought it might be interesting for other people to read especially if they're considering a career in games... Oh and CCP can look at this too lololloololl :) |

Reminds me of a link that was labeled "single-handedly building your own MMO game" and it led to a page about delusions of grandeur.

Hm, is it possible to make better than average game without passion? To be, or not to be, that's the question. |

FarmVille, where "passion" is passion for money, and "better than average" means relying on addictive behavioral and social manipulation.
You can tell me what is and isn't true when you pry the tinfoil from my cold, lifeless head.

Yeah I disagree with this person on a number of points, they sound pretty bitter :P I think if we're being realistic it's not necessarily passion but imagination you need to build games that are better than average.
Look at Skyrim, someone at Bethesda clearly stood up and just went "Yes, I want a game about motherfucking dragons and I want it now and we'll have a huge world filled with tons of NPCs living their lives.... I don't give a damn how long you say it will take lets do it" and then they just went and did it, granted this kind of thinking means the game always ends up with lots of bugs, glitches and crashes but it's better than the games that are made purely for profit. |

If the idiots at work had read his other article: http://drupal.technicat.com/writing/startup.html maybe the company I work for wouldn't be failing.
We're not a startup, we've been in business for 20+ years, but the owner let some stupid ***** start making decisions and everything that he mentioned in his article NOT to do, she did...now we're probably all going to be out of a job within the next year. This chick was an english major, with absolutely no background in business or technology. Her colossal waste of money over the last 5 years has killed us. http://youtu.be/yytbDZrw1jc |

Zenimax is still their publisher, they still had to cut a lot of content due to lack of time as a release date was set over a year beforehand. QA cannot get enough time with a product of that size if there is crunch time of any sort, as has been evidenced by every Elder Scrolls game before.
Some developers care more than others. As far as leading people go, you could go far worse than someone like Todd Howard - He's an xbox junkie but he still cares about what he does and tries to do it as best he can.
Anyway, that article does have some very good points. You have to remember, passion for games and gaming is not the same as a passion for making a great game - Something a lot of people stumble over. |
