Hey guys! I'm really new here and just discovered mining. I picked up a "badger" which has like a HUGE cargo hold. My question is, can park next to a really big asteroid and mine it while I'm alt+tabbed out of the game? Like i don't want to get in trouble or anything so I just want to be sure.
Thanks!

It's not against the EULA or anything, but it's really not smart.
Suicide attacks are relatively common in high sec, as is jetcan flipping, which can trip you up and make you a legal target if you're not paying attention.
The only "safe" place in EVE is inside an NPC station in high sec. The rest of the time you need to be on your guard.

There's no problem with that......it's long and slow and boring, so you're best off watching a movie or working on something else. You can't setup any form of scripting to do it, but as you've described it's OK.
I'd do it in high sec space only (0.9 or 1.0), and check back periodically. In 0.8 or lower you'll get popped by the belt rats, and in 0.4 or lower you won't last long at all with the player pirates and rats to contend with.
I'm often alt tabbed out (or semi-AFK as it's known) while things are happening in game. I run 2 accounts on one PC - so there's really no choice, but to alt-tab between them.

Curious: What is jetcan flipping - how do they make you a target with that ?

Take the ore from your can, jettison it back in their can. If you grab their can by mistake say goodbye :)

When you take from someone's can the owner can attack you. So they nick the ore from your can and start flashing red because of it, but that's not a problem since THEY are in a combat ship and you aren't. They hope you will do one of two things;
- See them flashing red, get mad for being stolen from and start shooting them, at which point they are allowed to 'defend' themselves and gank you.
- see that they pur YOUR ore in a new can and you then try to take it back, at which point you are stealing from THEM, so they can open fire.
The best way not to get ore stolen is by not mining solo into a jetcan, simple as that.

Yeah it's known as "afk mining", where you sit in .9 or 1.0 and mine into a hauler. Use a survey scanner to find a big fat roid, point the laser at it, and go to bed.

It would takes ages to mine anyway and can't fit weapons if you got a miner on it, rats would kill you afk.

and then goto work, lol...
