So this guy in a CNR keeps flying into one of my systems to run missions. And I keep trying to probe him out. Normally I'm very efficient and effective at probing out a target.
I missed the first cycle. Then the second. Then the third. Hmmm... now he warps out and jumps back to high sec. Much grumbling on vent...
So we're rabbling on vent, talking about the one that got away, when.. OMG! HE'S BACK IN LOCAL!!! 111ONONEONE... sooo, back to probing I go..
First probe cycle, nothing. Second, third.. Motherf#cker... he warps off, mission finished, goes back to high sec. HAX.
So now I'm a little irritated. We set up some lookouts, get him on our buddy lists. All the usual stuff. So now we're chatting about some other stuff, some noob comes in with a Megathron fitted with 6 medium lasers (wtf?!) and kinda distracting us...
OMG!!! HE'S IN LOCAL AGAIN!!! So off we go to track down the CNR. I get within 150m km of the target. That's practically in his lap. I start probing. Everyone on vent is giving me crap about how weak my probe skills are. I'm cussing CCP and the nerfed probe strengths. (I have maxed probe skills btw).
Then on vent: "Um, dood.." "What?" "You're using the wrong probe type..." "WHAT?" "Yeah man, you have a mag probe out. You need a grav probe..." "Uh yeah, I know that. I have a mag...probe...out... OMFG.."
So I fixed that ASAP, got a return on the next scan, everyone warped in, and then proceeded to try and ransom the CNR, he didn't want to cooperate, we blew him up, and netted a Gist C-Type XL Shield Booster worth about 1.3-1.5 Bil, plus a bunch of regular T2 stuff.
Moral of the story- always double check your stuff.

Moral of the story kids: Sober guys JUST flies better!
The whole story about drunk people being better at PVP is so not true. The only good tip i can give you is to fly without pants. The air flow allows higher speeds!

God you whine about probing alot, you must be rediculously unlucky, mag probes still have a very high grav strength (500?) i regularly get hits on mission runners with the deep space probes (1 strength) from 20 or more au away. So either you are the most unlucky pirate in ever, or you just like to ***** alot

I'm just really unlucky. Today I've blown up a Rook, a Hulk, and about another half a bill in loot shooting haulers. That's the stuff that blew up. Yeah, I'm pretty unlucky TBH. Oh well. Now my gang mates won't let me shootin anyone anymore lol.

Grumble at CCP for inventing a system where you use exploration probes to have a small chance of finding a ship... if it was on TV, you still wouldn't laugh.

Why didn't you just catch him on the highsec gate btw? Nowadays its easy to tank the sentries anyway.

That was our original plan, but having a collectively short attention span we got distracted chasing a megathron around.

Nice read. 'Tis always fun to slate your cov ops pilots, in my case it always jinx' them into finding everything with one probe.

Pretty much yes, racial quest probes have 12.5 times the sensor strength a snoop probe does, and 5 times the scan time. So arguably it's more efficient unless you're getting results in the first 4 probe cycles with snoops (which is just luck of the dice roll). I've gone up to 30 minutes with racials getting no result, and conversely gotten 0m results on battlecruisers with fathom probes on the first scan. Just how it goes, some mission runners have no idea just how lucky they are. Hell, few weeks ago, we probed out 5 people on a mission together, had our strike team waiting in their deadsapce ready to activate the second gate, discovered it needed a key, so someone docked to get the key (oh the marvelous wonders you loot busting missions). As said person with the key came out of warp in the first room with the rest of us, we all activated gate and they blipped off scanner right as the tacklers were away in warp. Mission team was literally saved by 5 seconds.

It's stupid isn't it. The fact that the probes that were meant for scanning them down are so terrible at it that probes not meant for it do it better.
Quite a while ago now a guy was out looking for some sites with his probes, I noticed the probe on scanner and was like, oh look that dude's probing stuff with his exploration probes. A few minutes later ... he warped in on us at a safespot, boy was I suprised. Didn't know they could do that back then. _______________

Yeah I had probed out a bc and gave warp on him. He engaged the first of our ships to warp in on his position. I decided to decloak at that point for some fun.

Only had my Covert Ops pilot on hand, and not my shooter. Plus, my whole crew was around and if I wouldn't have let them in on the chance to kill a CNR, I'd have a mutiny on my hands lol.
Could I have soloed him? Sure. Was it more fun to let everyone get a piece of the action? You bet.
