Edited by: Imhothar Xarodit on 13/08/2007 22:16:33 So, for anybody who hasn't tried it yet, this is the face of the new asteroids scanner.
I have 3 proposals to improve it even more, make it more usefull:
1. Put all 3 variations of an ore into the same group. If I am about to mine Omber only, I wish to have all 3 variations of omber in one group, and not spread accross the whole scanner.
2. Use colors to highlight targeted asteroids, and asteroids which have activated mining lasers on them. Use the same color which is used for highlighting bookmarks located in the same system as you are currently in (green) for targetted asteroids. Use the same color that is used for the highlighting of partially trained skills to indicate asteroids which have mining modules on them.
3. Barges and Exhumers are specifically built for the single purpose of mining (and bait maybe). I bet ORE would be intelligent enough to include the survey scanner into the ship's targetting systems as it fills the role of the vessel with 100%. That is, barges and exhumers should get a survey scanner built-in, which has automatically the range of the longest minig laser (if range can be modified in the future) and is auto-updated every time one of your mining lasers completes a cycle. Barges only have 1 med slot which can be put to far better use than a scanner and even on exhumers, with their 4 med slot, it is a waste and can be used for more usefull equipment. My proposal is to change the "overload high rack" button on barges and exhumers to "Open survey scanner", as mining lasers cannot be overloaded anyway.
The final picture would be something like this.
Green asteroids are targetted, yellow ones have active mining modules on them. The colors are of course a matter of taste, but I believe you get the picture.
Besides those 3 points the scanner change is a great improvement already but not finished yet as far as I'm concerned.

Outstanding
If I had a top 10 list this would go to number one with a bullet.

Edited by: Battlecheese on 14/08/2007 02:31:47 I am delighted to see this spiffy new scanner.
Your suggestions are cute, but the only one which would significantly impact the way the scanner is used is #3, which seems like a very large UI change. I cannot think of any other ship that has a specific popup for it that doesn't involve a module. I cannot see them overloading the heat ui like that.
I think I'd rather they deployed the new one asap rather than get distracted by the other minor ui changes.
Edit: The range being displayed is the crucial feature which permits the user to work out which laser to turn off when the roid runs out.

replacing overload rack is not necessary, just integrate the scanner in the onboard ship scanner(the one that scans for encounters). -- Tempus fugit -- |

I would have to agree that no ship should incorporate any thing that doesn't have a module attached to it. Example of the would be any EW bird or Covert ops ships, desighned for EW or Cloaking abilities and comes with ECM or a cloak? makes no sense.
The Idea that the scanner should only scan as far as your longest range is great! Although it really doesn't matter in mining ops when your going to remove the belt anyway.
Cycle timers in the scanner on the asteroid the laser is currently working on would be of better use than highlights. That way the amount is updated by computer every cycle thus optimizing when your going to turn it off and move on.
Roid scanners are only useful if your only trying to get a certain amount. Other than that its going to get poped so knowing how much is mute considering you just need to know how many and where the others are and the overview fills that role.

built-in scanner ? simply add this for mining barges and other ships as module (like probe launcher).

Actually the scanner can save you alot of time, if you know your asteroid has only 10 ore units left it is a waste of time to let it finish the complete cycle instead of aborting it after 10 seconds.

Got a new idea today in case number 1 of my original post cannot be done:
4. Put a checkbox on the scanner window to only use overview settings.
Otherwise I agree point 3 is a difficult thing and the arguments against it are quite valid. I stil consider point 1 (or 4 as alternative) the top priority regarding the survey scanner.

I like these ideas.
However I do see a few issues with suggestion 3. One way of implementing it would be to give the exhumers a 5th mid slot that could only equip a scanner. However this would unbalance the ship because at the moment you have to trade convienience for tanking. Do I use 3 or 4 slots for tanking.
On another point I would quite like to see some dedicated mining rigs.
