Hi all,
Being a new player I imediatly went looking through all the skills in this game and I found a path that interests me. I am currious how strong a fighter drone build would be in the world of EVE. I dont know why but for some reason I just keep thinking of a Protoss Carrier from Star Craft, little ships flying around doing my bidding.
Any advice would wonderful. Thanks, Zerosend

Fighter drones are tough mo'fo's... but you can only use them from a carrier.
Rest assures, ive had my BS's popped by more than few of them

So its not a bad long term goal for a new player? If so i am glad to hear that.
Thanks, Zerosend

A carrier is indeed a good long-term goal. By long-term I mean a year or longer.
There are alot of skills to train to get into a carrier, and you'll need to make alot of ISK while training to be able to afford the skillbooks first of all, and the carrier and fittings eventually.

Don't be discouraged by the above about Fighter Drones.
Fighter Drones are for advanced players, but the basic form of drones is available on day 1 if you want. Combat Drones are available to almost everyone - if you start a Gallente character, you'll get some reasonable starter skills for drones.
Light Scout drones will fly about and do you bidding (well sort of). You need to practice with them and there are plenty of guides/threads about them.
After using light drones for a little while you can move up to Medium, Heavy and Sentry Drones (and the T2 versions of each).
I use drones A LOT and just because I can use Heavy or Sentry Drones, doesn't mean I always do. I was having some trouble killing a certain rat the other day with the Heavy Drones....I brought the heavies in and sent out the light fellas...the rat was dead in seconds.
Just don't get FIGHTER Drones mixed up with COMBAT drones.....Combat drones are what you want to start with. Cheers Baka ______________________ Have a Skill in training every second of every day and never buy a ship you can't afford to replace at least once. |

Thanks a ton Baka for the advice. I didnt even realize that there was a lower class of drones that would kill stuff for me. When I get back from work tonight I will start the process of grinding some ISK and getting the skills I need.
Thanks, Zerosend

Another thing-being a capital ship, carriers have some restrictions on where they can and can't go. They're also tempting targets without a decent corp to back them up.
If you're investing the year+ time it's going to take you to get there with decent support skills, make sure you know what you're going to use the thing for and that you have the support you need.

If you want a really nice Drone ship on your way to a Carrier, train into an Ishtar.

I am a drone person myself. I say go for the Myr as it will give you drone bonuses. Getting into a Battle Cruiser is fairly easy in the scheme of things.
If you go Gallente ships, then get armor skills up and the drone skills up.
My goal is also a carrier filled with fighter drones and support drones. But, as mentioned, Carriers cannot come into Hi-Sec... So, that is something to keep in mind as well.

Sounds like you're a drone-lover. Gallente ships are definitely the race for you if this is correct - a few good non-capital ships of theirs would be (an ascending order of toughness on average):
Ishkur Vexor Ishtar Myrmidon Eos Dominix
Try out for a Vexor first, and see if you like it. Its the cheapest and weakest of the T1 drone ships, but can be deadly with a little experience against an alright opponent in combat.

Thanks everyone for all the input it will be taken to heart. I spent some time and grinded some ISK last night and bought the skill book for combat drones and started training. Next I will have to grind out some ISK to upgrade to the crusier class ships. Lots of work ahead of me but here goes nothing!

Remember this also.... with Gallente ships, you need to get armor tanking down. So, you will definately want to get you tank up.

Krytie,
Excuse my ignorance but what does that mean exactly? I know a ship like I am thinking will definatly need to be able to take a hit or two so do you mean beefing up my armor?
Thanks, Zerosend

"Tanking" refers to your ability to absorb damage. A ship is said to be "armor tanked" when it is designed to have its armor (as opposed to its shields) take most of the damage, by fitting extra armor plates, armor hardeners that increase your resistance to damage, and repairers that will patch up your armor in combat.
Likewise, "shield tanking" is when you set up your ship so that your shields will take most of the damage (using shield booster, shield hardeners, and shield extenders).
Some ships are better at one or the other. Armor tanking, for instance, needs a lot of low slots, so ships with more low slots are better for armor tanking. Conversely, ships with more mid slots are better for shield tanking.
What Krytie is saying is that the ships that are designed to use drones are, coincidentally, also all designed to armor tank. So if you want to use those ships, training skills for armor tanking (especially Hull Upgrades and Repair Systems) is also a must.

Edited by: Krytie on 15/08/2007 23:33:38 Derrys said it pretty spot on:
Some things to think about training if you have not already: Repair Systems Thermatic Armor Compensation Explosive Armor Compensation Kinetic Armor Compentsation EM Armor Compensation Hull upgrades Mechanic
Getting these up as high as possible will help your tank VERY much. Not sure what you have in those skills, but if they are low, you will definately want to get them higher.
I use the myr right now and I have all to level 5s with all T2 hardeners on. I am pretty much able to sit and tank most rooms in level 3 with full aggro. Personally, I got my basic drone skills to level 3 and then worked exclusively on my tanking skills after that. I am now going only flat out for the drone skills now as I am not worried at all about how long prior to having to warp out and recall my drones.
So, if you have not thought of the tanking side of things, it may be good to add that in.

Agreed with Krytie save for the compensation skills, train those up if you plan on using passive hardeners like the Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane a lot, with good compensation skills they can compete with active hardeners but are resistant to nos as they need no cap to use.
But yes, *bows down to the Hull Upgrades V on my charactersheet*.

Zero - go to the top of the forum and you'll find a sticky for guides.....go into this and look for "beginners guide to tanking" or something similar, this will answer all your basic tanking questions (and then some).
Wile you're there, take a look at any othe guides that spark and interest......there's lots there and lots to learn.
Glad to see you're progressing with your plans.....if you're getting a cruiser, you'll definitely get some good info out of the tanking guide.

Thanks Krytie, Sakura, and Baka,
I do plan on getting a crusier and will start setting up tanking stuff as soon as I get it. The plan currently is, skill up to cruiser as well as a weapon to fit on the cruiser to hold me over until my drones are ready. Followed by tanking skills while I continue to mission gaining ISK and then I will hit the drone skills hard and I should be able to have a drone ship in a couple of months LOL.
Thanks guys. Zerosend

Depending on how far you have gotten, the Gallente Imicus is a very nice drone frigate and fine for level 1 missions until you get the cash for a vexor. With the right soldier starting build (special forces if I recall correctly), you can be flying drones in one as soon as you can afford the ship.
