Sure intelligence is one thing, but what about the other persons efforts.
Guy comes home from work, plays eve for an hour or 2 everyday, makes x amount of money. Decides to buy something nice for a change with the little money he has. Talks to seller for 1 hour chit chatting, time for trade comes, trusts the seller only to see the product and be scammed and lose all the money.

Happens to best of us some times, and yes thatĘs how ccp wants the game to be, and that adds to eve greatness, since it sets very few limits on what can be done, it has nothing to do with u, or what you did.
Just watch out to what you buy next time, and trust no one, unless u know who thy are and where they live and can hit targets at 700m.
so how much did u lose?

Everyone cant be on their toes... some people want to just chill and play a game at the end of the day. Maybe play a space simulation game cuz they like the genre..
considerring everything is time based in this game, what about those who dont have time, still play cuz they like the environment, only to be scammed out of their earnings..
scams in real life.. scams in games..
why cant ccp atleast put anti scam interface design in their implimentations. Then YOU guys will be on your toes. Fair play imo.

There are much worse things in real life. You must have heard about the scams where 2 people knock on your door and give some reason they need to come in, then 1 keeps your attention while the other manages to pocket anything tasty they can see. There are a million variations of it and countless other bad things happen to good people every day. Eve reflects real life in a lot of ways. There will always be bad apples in the population out there trying to gain assets fraudulently.
To avoid fraud, I suggest: 1) Never ever trade with anyone found in jita local. 2) Get the person to make a contract or make your own search for a contract with what you want. Only ever go for item exchange or auction contracts and read each contract you are about to bid on at least twice to make sure it has the right things in it. 3) Don't trade things directly with someone in station, risk of you getting scammed is much bigger. 4) If it sounds like a really nice deal for something, its a scam, 99% of the time. 5) If you are talking to a person about a trade, watch what they say carefully, most scammers are below average IQ and they often contradict themselves or say something that is complete nonsense about how something works in eve. They have a scam that they spam at people time and again and it doesnt change, when they actually have to lie convincingly in a convo, they trip up as often as not.
Hope this helps and sorry for your loss Sim

Thing is that CCP decided that ingame scamming is fair play. It is one of the possible eve careers. Ingame is the keyword here, using normal game mechanics.
Eve in many ways is a game where you gotta be on your toes. Not just because of scammers.

100 mil can be made in a few hours, pretty much no matter what profession you are if your character has been in the game for at least 4 or 5 months. I dont know how old your character is but I would suggest you join a player corp with quite a few guys in it that can give you a lot of support and help you earn isk faster.

It sucks to be scammed but this an adult game, and as such it's not meant to be sugar coated.
There are however plenty of posts on the forums about how to avoid scams, and what and what not to when trading to avoid this happening.

It does suck to be scammed but at the end of the day it is your own fault. I had this happen to me twice. The scammers talked to me for i don't know how many minutes to gain my trust and then finally the killing blow with the scam contract (of course i didn't fall for it). You just have to pay attention and if the conversation with the person is anything longer than a minute, it is most likely a scam to my experience. ___________________________________

Actually it's not that easy for a pure pirate - that's 2 successful solo BS ransoms (not as easy as it sounds) , it's very much dependant on luck (faction loot drops , stuffed haulers ect) Which is why I like scamming sometimes no other profession lets you earn that same amount of ISK in 5 minutes. It's not a complete headache like trading.

Thats like playing good old Doom, or something like that, just coz you like to look at the nice textures, and then get angry when a monster comes along and tries to kill you... Thats the game. EvE is not the kind of game where you can expect to be left alone at all times, just coz you don't feel like seeing other players.

Most scams depend on one of two things:
1) GREED. They hope to snag folks who are looking for an advantageous deal themselves. Thus they post "deals" on "Caldari Navy Ravens" (which are ordinary ravens, and otheer such. My favorite to watch (I don;t scma myself), is the ole "I'm leaving Eve and want to give my money away... send me 1 mill and I'll send 10 mill back!" That one's almost like a lottery since you have to make some early payouts to snag any REAL income.
2) Inexperience or noobishness. Looking to snag some guy with more money than expereince. Happens all the time.
My advice? Always assume you're being scammed and stick with foolprrof trade methods.

A simple answer my good man!
The person who put so much effort into gaining his wealth should put just as much effort into protecting it!

Scamming is good for the game. It keeps it dark, nasty and ebil. That's what this game should have been from day one. Sadly nowerdays it's more of a WoW paradise for newbs...
I've considered scamming before. I can say this because I know people outside of the organisations who've done it and seen how it works. Most scamming is in the game mechanics, but some are obviously exploitive and should be noted.
I very rarely trust anyone with my assets. I won't mention names, but there's my corp and a few people outside. When you're trading with anyone, always be aware that the person on the otherside could be unscrupulous and will do anything to get their hands on your isk/assets.
It's part of the game. It's not 'sad' to limit your trust, so long as you understand that in this games harsh environment - and it is still harsher than any other MMO out there - people will do whatever they can to make themselves richer. It's Ruthless. It's Vicious. It's the few things that make this game more alive than any other out there.
But, in the end, I've never scammed. Save a shuttle I once bought for 7mil by lag-accident and subsequently sold on for the same price... I'm not rich and I don't really care to be. You sound like you're curious but you don't sound as if you've lost a lot. Learn from it. If you're unscrupulous yourself (or RP an unscrupulous character), then try doing it yourself, but always be aware of your reputation. In the end, it's what you want from the game that drives ya.
Besides, once you realise what I've said, you'll realise you don't want to play any other game that isn't as dark and enthralling and brutal.

I have so many ideas in my head for ways to scam, but thats just not the way I want to be portrayed in the game. Piracy is a legitimate career and what some consider an easier way to make their ISK. Its just how Eve is, sorry to say. If you get ganked, pick yourself up and try again. Some play the game as a persona. You have one group that ganks and does it just for the fun and the challenge, while another group that does it because they were picked on as kids (or the nerd at work) and found "their way" of getting back at society anonymously. Loss is a part of Eve that is nothing more than an inevitability. I wouldn't expect this to be the last time you get scammed/ganked/insert other loss word here. Its Eve, and its going to happen, just pay attention to details a little more and you can prolong that inevitability. GL to you.

Real life is so much, much more cruel than EVE. If you think popping your **** thrasher in a belt or scamming you for a couple million ISK makes someone an utter and complete douchebag, I got some bad news for you.
People routinely murder total strangers for their shoes. People also routinely steal millions of dollars. Miz Cenuij and kublai are fluffy kittens in comparison.
