Yesterday, I got around to rebuilding my desktop PC with XP. All going well, loaded XP,all the updates, drivers etc., started loading on software. Ran out of time, did a proper shutdown.
Came back this morning, PC turns on, no signal to monitor. No beeping, and hard drive light shows on permanently from switch on. I unplug the hard drives, no difference. Unplug the RAM, no difference. Still no error beeps. Hard drive shows permanently on.
I did root around in the case yesterday to fix a WLAN PCI card issue (didn't work and then worked when I put it in a different slot- go figure), but it was working subsequently to this when I installed the s/w.
Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? The HDD light being permanently on is a bit weird, and I've never seen a system do this. I suspect probably the mobo or CPU is shot but would appreciate any pointers if possible.... -- 2d EveMaps

If you're using a video card, try to use the mobo's onboard video plug. I once broke my video card while trying to install something or other...the symptoms sound similar.
If you can't figure it out, and you live in the US, you can take it to Best Buy and have the Geek Squad look at it. They'll usually diagnose the problem for free. ------

Thanks, it doesn't have onboard VGA. I have unplugged all unecessary cards, un/reseated CPU, removed and reseated memory.... still nada
In fact, if i remove CPU and graphics card completely, it still errors the same! -- 2d EveMaps

Have you tried using a different HD to see if that is causing issues? Nothing else comes to mind, although I've just finished a night shift so don't look at me funny. |

No, but I have 3 physical HDDs, and unplugging difference combos made no difference. I spoke to a mate who knows about h/w more and he thinks it's either PSU not supplying enough power, mobo fried or CPU
Will get a cheap old CPU off eBay and ditto PSU and see what happens -- 2d EveMaps

Does it give you the normal error if you try to boot with either the ram/cpu/video card removed?

No, no matter what I pull out or leave in, I always get the same- HDD light on, no signal to monitor, fans and HDD spin but nothing else. -- 2d EveMaps

Sounds like your mobo has something seriously wrong with it. My old P4 box exhibited the same symptoms after having gotten a nasty knock during shipping. The mobo got damaged and while things would power up there was no status beep or video signal.

i had something like this and it was nothing more than a bad hard drive ribbon, i checked the hd, the power supply, the dvdrw, and the vid card. and after swapping those with known good units i changed the ribbon and it was the problem. try getting a different one.

Strip the mobo down to basic. Just CPU, Ram, and Video. The trick then is to work with known "good" cpu, ram, and video. If the mobo doesn't properly boot from that basic mode, it's pretty much toast. (Not un-salvageable but as close to is as no difference.)

Oddly enough, the floppy drive cable being plugged in the wrong way around would likely give you the symptoms you describe.
Might you have unplugged that when installing the PCI card?

The reset or power button getting stuck causes weird problems like he has discribed also.
