Originally by: E-Mail Thank you all and welcome to the EVE Linux and Mac Beta Test program.
Before we move on we need to outline what will be expected of you and how we will achieve this. I would also like to get a better understanding of what systems you each have so we can make sure we are well covered.
So firstly if you could reply to the email and fill in the following information please.
Personal Information
Full Name :
Email Contact :
Country :
Account Name :
System Information (for Each Machine)
Processor Type/Name :
Processor Speed :
RAM :
Video Card :
Video Driver Version :
Operating System :
Additional Information :
Why we are collecting this is the following. We will be setting up a specific test server to do this testing against and will be giving your primary account (on that server) the additional roles needed to make/create the items you need.
As for the Machine information we need to make sure we are testing enough variety to be safe.
Now a few bits of information. Yes this is a wrapped Client. It has the Transgaming Cedega/Cider engine wrapped round the EVE client to enable it to run on the new platforms. This means the following.
On Linux : ATI driver support is not that great on Linux at this time and as such we will not be officially supporting it. Yes we are aware that there are a number of workarounds and other drivers and we will be providing links to them for people to use but we cannot support it.
On Mac : Only Intel Based MacÆs are supported at this time. As we are using the Cider Engine to back the game this limited us to the Intel Processors only.
The testing process.
We will be granting access to your accounts listed above to a members only forum on the myeve website. It will have special threads in it for a number of different test that need to be conducted. You will need to complete a number of these to make sure that we get the system coverage we need. Most of these tests are not difficult, but some can be time consuming. You will also be able to work on your own testing but we ask that you write up a thread to detail this testing so we can track it and others can also repeat it if they want.
We would like a couple of people to complete each test and post their results on the forums (more details on this will come out in the next email).
At the Bottom of this email is an example of a test.
You will be given methods for contacting our support team that will be supporting this Beta program.
Thank you all again and I look forward to hearing from you.

I just do not want to give up my account name, for any reason, because then if it is a phishing expedition, they can claim they forgot the password, provide them with some additional info, and I would be screwed, so I would appreciate if someone from the GM team would let me know.

As far as I am aware this is a genuine mail.
I am attempting to get clarification so hopefully I can update or a Developer can post to confirm shortly.

all mails in this vein should be accompanied by a link to a page on the eve website, outlining whats happening i think. that way it would provide easy certification.

Did you, by any chance, sign up to the linux and mac client beta test from which they said they would email you for more info?

Hence I am posting here... it supposedly came from: [email protected], but faking the header is not really such a big deal, or re-routing apparently legitimate e-mail.
So, I am just little suspicious and figured, if anyone else got it, they should be suspicious as well, since it is asking for a full account name, why the hell they need a full account name? There is no reason to ask for that at all. And, as a matter of fact, they should know what the account name is.... if it is legitimate CCP e-mail.

I probably did, specifically MAC, but the e-mail and account name threw me off. I figured such info they would have already. So, my paranoia kicked into overdrive.

Edited by: Lady Trade on 21/08/2007 10:31:06 Edited by: Lady Trade on 21/08/2007 10:29:49 Yeah why don't they just ask for the stupid API-Key thats also used for EVEMON etc..? I'm sure CCP of all people could then get hold of the account-name through the API-Key and if anyone else were to get their hands on the Key then it wouldn't hurt because they cold not get the account name.
That is what the system was implemented for or not?
Edit 2: Is it not one of the highest rules of MMORPGs that the GMs and Devs will NEVER ask you for your account info? I thought it was thb. |

Apologies.
Yes it is a genuine email. I asked for volunteers for testing the of the new Linux and Mac Clients.
I also mentioned in that thread to expect and email confirming. If you where registered on it by mistake then I appologise and you are under no obligation to participate in the trial.
I asked for the account name to confirm account names so that your accounts on the TEST server can be configured to participate in the testing. If you feel uncomfortable with sending your account name via email you can EVEmail it to me on tranquility.
Sorry again for any confusion.

Would it not be wise to put something into the ingame news thing when doing something like this.
It's not the 1st time I've read posts about spurious emails from CCP.

Indeed, this is the third or fourth such email sent in recent months that I am aware of. It needs addressing.
Ideally, no one should ever ask for your account name, it should be just as easy for CCP to activate accounts on SiSi (and obtain personal account information) using character names.

OMG!! Where do I sign up. I've been running eve in Cedega for a while now. The ability to test a native linux client would be amazing.
I work as an application developer, from home. so I have time on my hands, a fast computer, and linux as my main OS.

You signup for mac/linux betatesting. You read in the corresponding thread on EVE-O you will be sent an email if you are accepted. You get an email with said topic, from someone @ccpgames.com.
Indeed, very confusing.

I signed up, a long time ago...., and when I see a company that should know my account name, actually requesting it, I think an amount of healthy paranoia is in order. It is fairly easy to mask the actual sender address and receiving address in the e-mail fields. And, since I use Apple Mail, it is an extremely streamlined interface, that requires one to go through the actual routing information to determine the validity of chosen e-mail. So, yea, I was confused, and now I am not.
Originally by: CCP Lingorm ....Yes it is a genuine email. I asked for volunteers for testing the of the new Linux and Mac Clients..
YAY, and thank you for the clarification. And I have not checked the other thread on the client info for a long time, I guess that is where it all started. As I said I was just little worried about account name and all that jazz, since I would think you will have it. But, I guess you will want an easier way to database the computer specs & participants, hence the info via E-Mail Expect an e-mail reply from me back. Cant wait to test the MAC client. And thank you again for clarifying it.

overparanoia much?
Then again you do have a point to confirm it, it would have been more suitable to email kieron and not set off tinfoilhat alarms on the forums uneedingly -

Why is none of this ever done on the Eve Website ? You have a whole web cell doing what exactly ? Get them to code you a sign up page and the confusion and paranoia will go away. Once logged in you know thier account name, & personal information & dont need to ask for it. ___

I tried to be as tinfoil free as possible. Rather than repeat what most people do - they make a declarative statement like: "This is another Scam...BEWARE" - I chose to ask the question: "Is this for real, or a phishing expedition?" Thus, offsetting any obvious tinfoil influence as much as possible.
But, as some people know me in game, I am extremely paranoid, to the point of being ridiculous sometimes. I started the game long time ago, got scammed, learned my lesson, and never really trusted anyone since. Then came the GHSC heist, which by itself impressed me to no end, and made me doubly careful about the people in EVE.
And then EVE became a huge success, to the point where it is now lucrative to hack accounts and empty them out or sell them on 3d party sites. So, I am really sorry that some saw my questioning as overly paranoid, but I could not help it.
On the other hand, I should have e-mailed Kieron, but it was early in the morning, I was running late for work, and I figured if I ask the question on the forum, I will get a quick answer. Since, lets face it, Kieron is usually very busy, an it takes him a day or two to reply, the possibility - which turned out to be true - of the news being legitimate was extremely exiting to me, since I use Apple heavily.
I hope that clarifies my initial intentions to most.

GREAT GOOGLY-MOOGLY!
A test of Mac and Linux clients!
I hope it is a successful test. I'm just about ready to switch from windirt and one of the things that has been holding me back is EVE.

Mac and linux clients seem like good ideas assuming it doesn't take away resources from the native windows programming it should be worth a laugh :)
Guess this means the mac and linux guys spending lots of time on SISI each patch to make sure everything continues to work otherwise you might find yourselvesin a patch and unable to test, sadly i use windows here and without a port of OSX for my hardware (read never happening) or a VMWare solution able to run the required graphics i am unable to assit in testing but wish you the best of luck, you might need it :) ---------
