Bridge crew are hired NPCs offered to you by Agents. You pay them a weekly fee depending on the importance of their abilities. They leave if you go broke. Bridge crew arnt tradeable or escrowable. They respect your ability and wont follow another player.
The number of bridge crew slots available varies by ship. Ship class and race being a variable.
A frigate would have only one bridge crew slot (copilot). A battleship would typically have 5 slots availabe.
When you eject from a ship bridgecrew come with you and appear in your hold. If you get pod killed your bridgecrew are dead.
Bridge crew vary in ability but generally only add the equivalent of 1 skill level to your ships ability. For example one bridge crew might have +1 gunnery type abilities. While another might have +1 sensory type abilities.
Bridge crew are relatively rare rewards from missions so it would take a while to get the perfect crew for your ship.

Actually no, as the cruiser class ships or higher we originally described as having a "crew" running them, I think the battleships were supposed to have a crew of about 5000 or something.

All frigates, indies, and about half the cruisers have a crew of one, you.
The Other ships have a crew of varying size.
Most cruisers that have more than one, just have a dozen or two. Battleships range from a hundred to a couple thousand.
Back in beta there were some schematics in the ships section of what is now World of EVE. I don't know why they disappeared.

I can't begin to comprehend the lag that 5000 small pods ejecting from each BS would be like :)
Makes me think of spaceballs, when the Mega Maid goes kaboom.
But hey. I think i speak for a lot of ppl when i say NO MORE fleabitten homeless science slaves thank you. A single damsel purr-hapz if she's cute and doesn't weigh in at the old 400 kg/1 m3.
and you can take your droids and that wookie back to SWG, we don't serve their kind here.
