Now I am going to be careful in how to word this thread:
If and only if IQFE came out and promised everything or mostly everything that is currently promised here: http://www.fl-tw.com/Infinity/infinity_overview.php
how interested would you be in playing the game and how likely are you to
A) leave eve B) play both C) stick to eve
and how excited are you generally about it eventually coming out and what do you think of a more twitched base successor to Elite/X3.
An honest thread for honest people.

If it's as good as I'm hoping it to be, I'd definately quit EVE for it, or atleast play it in combination.

Just because they constantly update their forums with new developments instead of the front page does not mean it's going without updates

ya 99% of the updates are in the forums, I generally don't look at the MIRC page, the principle differences is that A) twitch based, B) prodecural universe, and C) dynamic missions D) planets will be interactable from the get go I think.

Unfortunately, it is made by two people and they cannot work as fast as a studio, their demo sucks and doesn't show anything more than the poor combat system, and they have been working for years with hardly anything concrete to show. This is going the way of flying cars and the Phantom gaming system. Sorry.

For a few people they sure do seem to have gotten alot of work done enginewise, if my 4 years studying programming has taught me even without a studio 2-3 dedicated programmers and an entire community of supporting forumites/contributors can get alot of work done and also work on the ICP has largely ceased to free up time on working more on the game itself, the ICP is just that, a combat prototype to get a general idea on how the engine will work and from there build on it.
And hey the ICP would be worth 5$ to buy on its own merits and fun to play.
Oh and ya, something occured to me, Eve-Online started out with only 2 people working on it as well, so be careful who you diss.
So you see, there are alot of people out there who are like "ya I am going to be a game designer one day" well geuss what there's 2 people right there out there now making good progress on that dream.

it doesn't really look that great other than the engine and the whole planet thing.
the combat is nothing fresh, if it were more like freespace2 then I would be interested, but right now it's so simple and boring.
and it looks kinda... bland art wise... with eve's graphics being updated and games going DX10, it's going to be down right out of date when it comes out.
I think they should let CCP buy the engine for the flying down to planets. but other than that, it doesn't look so great... maybe if they overhual everything. ----------------------------------- I'm working my way through college target CCP need...more room... |

Yeah, but they've been working on it for at least 3 years, I think, and haven't done anything but work on the engine. It's going to be a long time before it actually comes out, if ever.
And I too am reminded of Derek Smart. His games sound great on paper, but they're slightly less fun to play than sticking a rusty spork in your eye.
They've promised a lot, but I think DNF will be out before Infinity.
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.

Aside from the fact that it looks like blatant vaporware, it seems to lack a lot of what makes EVE good. Non-consensual PvP, death penalties, innovative skill trees and character profession, even single sharding.
I don't play EVE because it's "internet spaceships". I play it because of all those things that make it different from every other MMO on the market. If Infinity is just internet spaceships in a conventional MMO format, I won't be touching it any more than I am PotBS. ------

Where the hell did you get your information from???
1) Non-consensual PvP. Uhm, yes, there will be... Any planet that is not in a core system will have non-consensual PvP. There are ~100 core systems, the rest of the 100 billion are free reign PvP. 2) Death Penalties. Uhm, yes there will be, even perma-death where your character is gone for good and your relatives inherit some of your possesions. 3) No skill tree, meaning no pressure to keep paying for sub just to train skills. There will be as many or more professions than in EVE.
Please don't speak about something when you obviously have no clue in the matter...

Edited by: Patch86 on 02/09/2007 13:28:05 I was listing what makes EVE good, not what Infinity lacks. Sorry for not being clearer.
From what I understand from The FAQ there will be, and I quote, "no perma death", but that's understandable seeing as it's a game.
I gather it will not be a single shard game.
The FAQ mentions that pirating is not a terribly viable profession (to quote: "It will not be easy to play as a pirate, though, and players will be free to explore other domains (trading, mining, doing business, exploring unknown worlds, etc.. )").
I consider skill trees and character professions an important part online games- if I wanted a game where my character is as good in my first 5 minutes as it'll ever be at any point, I'd play Counter Strike.
I also, from a purely personal perspective, don't see how well a first-person shooter (FAQ's words) based game will be able to satisfactorily represent "large" space ship combat. I don't actually want to live my entire game life in a fighter, I want to be in command of a massive star juggernaut (as I am in EVE). ------

The perma death is still in discussion. It would occur if you jumped out of hyperspace near a black hole. And maybe some other scenario's. Nothing is concrete yet.
You gather it's going to be sharded?
No, the plan is for a single server. Most likely with hard limits on number of players in a system, with a tag team type fighting setup, so you can still have 1000 vs. 1000 battles but only 40 players fighting at a time. All this is still in formulation. The only thing being coded right now is the game engine, not the game mechanics...

Every time someone claims, with a straight face, that Infinity will have 100 billion or whatever huge number planets/systems, I laugh a bit in real life.

Edited by: Yao Shiu on 02/09/2007 19:50:37 I'd play a trial, see how it works out... but I've never really been into flight-sim like combat.
depends how it plays, I'd never be bothered to go get a joystick etc.
that said, it does look pretty, and the fact you can fly straight from space into the atmosphere of a planet is very cool.

Have they bothered thinking about the money they're going to need to run a cluster capable of handling the calculations a game with "100's of billions" of dynamic planets in a MMORPG?
