Hey, need help from anyone who's actually used a Dread in fleet combat.
I have 2 setups in mind for my Naglfar's tank, one can tank 7111dmg/sec, but is unsustainable. The other can do just over 5kdmg/sec but is sustainable.
Which would be better?

go for the sustainable tank... if you get primaried by a enemy capital gang it doesnt matter if its a dual rep tank with faction hardeners you're going down and there's nothing that will stop the ship from going boom, if your pinned down.

Offcourse the 7111 dps tank. In a fleet you will be left alone, until its your turn to die. Than everything focusses on you and you turn your dual rep tank on. You will probably die before you hit 25% cap, but tanked 7111 dps in that period.
Also modules can be turned off and on, this means that you can burst rep a lot. Keep 1 capital rep running and use 2e for bursts.
edit: The OMG out of cap = no tank reply made me laugh. Tell that to my plated, no rep blasterthron. Like 40 k armor cant tank...He! It may not fire, but its still tanking. _________________________________________________ Breetime

Depends entirely on how long the 7111dmg/s tank lasts for. The aim is to try and last till your out of siege and can be repped and capped back up by your carrier gang.

Both seem bad for Siege mode ... Are you talking about non-siege tanks?
In Siege mode you can easily fit a Naglfar to tank > 8k DPS sustained with 1 repper or 14k for a short time with 2 reppers (and 7500 sustained).
isn't it funny how some people advocate both GTC<=>ISK trades and EVE being superior due to its cruelty and costly losses, when they use the former to circumvent the latter?

Tanking is repping incoming damage. Your thron doesnt tank, it slowly dies. You just happen to die slower than your enemies in some cases.
For caps, go with the sustainable tank, on a nag being the cap power relay shield tank option that will run even in siege mode and can tank like, what, 18k DPS forever?

No way, please back this up with some fittings/numbers.

Naglfar:
Highs: the usual Mids: 2x DG invu field, capital booster, 2x boost amp Lows: 5x TS capacitor power relay, 1x damage control rigs: 3x CCC
With perfect skills and +3% cap amount and cap recharge implants recharges 420 cap per second at peak, enough to run the capital booster and hardeners forever. Not sure if it fits, may need +3 or +5% cpu implant. Average resists will be around 79% for 16k DPS tanked, so i was a little off.
Swap out the damage control with another TS CPR for easier fitting and more nos sustainability, but slightly less tank.

*edit* you need one named shield boost amp in order to make it fit, so substract a few percent of the tank.
*edit2* this is assuming you use artillery guns, with AC you have a bit more CPU to play with
I tryed that in EFT and im 200cap/s and 60 cpu short. All skills at 5.

Hmm, using EFT I get (with the following setup) to fit,
Highs: 2 Citadel launchers, 2 6x2500mm Repeating Artie
Mids: 2 x DG, 1 Cap Shield Booster, 1 x t2 Amp, 1 cap recharger II
Lows: 5 TS CPR, 1 Dmg Control
Rigs: 3 x CCC I
With maxed skills you can run it all forever but can only tank 10.1k dps in seige and 2.6k dps out of seige, I don't factor in gang skill effects into the shield resists but that surely wouldn't make the tank pass 18k tankable dps...?

It will fit, im certain of that with 911/918.75 CPU taken. However i was wrong on the cap, you need 6 CPR to permarun in siege. Downside is you lose a bit of tank in the form of the DCU, upside is you gain enough CPU to fit another T2 shield boost amp.

Doesn't fitting CPRs wipe out your shield boosting?
6x TS CPRs each with a -10% amount to boost amount, surely you'd be better off fitting Cap Rechargers in the mids and dropping the boost amps. ___________________ Your signature image exceeds the maximum allowed dimensions of 400x120 pixels and filesize of 24000 bytes -Sahwoolo Etoophie |

No it doesn't. The penalty is stacking penalized therefor the maximum you will ever lose is about 28%.

5k is more then enough to tank a POS for a good period of time, that is really the role of a dread so i'd go with sustainable because its better in the long run and micromanaging is bad in pos sieges. __________________________________________ Yes it is great being amarr. OK, so your DPS numbers were more than 50% off and you were wrong about the cap too, even though you came up with a faction-pimped setup.
I rest my case and suggest the cheap T2 (no implants) armor tanking setup with about 8k dps sustained and 1 repper. ;-)

You will be primary in any larger fight with more than one capital. So there are two things to consider:
1) You want to live as long as you can. More dps tanked, some more seconds gained.
2) You want to be able to buy a new ship, so better spare the faction gear.

How are you guys getting over 7000dmg/sec ?? is that will faction tank? With CCC's and all T2 fittings I can't get (armor tank) past that 7111dmg/s mark. (that's also with only 1 repper).

Putting 1bil in mods on a 1.5bil ship is hardly 'pimping'.
I just wanted to prove that a shieldtanked nag works just as well if not better than an armourtanked one, and even my corrected numbers prove that.
