I am heading into lvl 3 missions and I am going to buy a BC to do them, but I can't decide whether I want to fly in the Drake or in the Hurricane. Up until now I've been in a Caracal, firing off missiles at frigates, and it got really boring, so I wanted to try something new. I have skills for both of these ships, the only problem is that I am lacking gunnery skills, although I can learn those up.
I've been looking through some setups in the setup forum and it seems that the Hurricane is more 'tanky', while the Drake is more 'ganky', and I don't know if the Drake has enough tank to go through lvl 3 mishes, or if the Hurricane has enough firepower to go through lvl 3 mishes quick enough

I think you got that switched around, many people think the Drake has one of the Best tanks in game.
The Drake can do Level 4 missions with the right skills and setup.
The Hurricane may be more fun though, never ran any missions in it yet.

certainly hurri for fun imo
6 x ac`s 2 x hamls
2 large extenders (best) ab invul
3/4 sheild power relays 2/3 gyros
core purger rigs when u can afford em
drop ab for extra hardner and swap invul for rat specific hardner if u need more tank, as well as add more spr`s , but generally the above setup works for most

i've gone through them both, and i've been trying the setups using EFT, and it seems the hurricane does much better with shield tanks than the drake. i haven't tried any armour tanks for the drake yet, though.

Set up a good drake passive shield tank and you'll never have to worry about armor. Drakes can tank lvl4's passively without much worry.

Edited by: Kalana Eargon on 05/09/2007 23:02:34 Edited by: Kalana Eargon on 05/09/2007 23:00:29 I personally would suggest Drake, I have done almost every Lvl 4 mission and I never have to warp out in my Drake. Also, the Drake only has a maximum range which is good for all the lvl 3 missions, so you just stay how ever far away you want to take less dmg. Also, passive Drake takes away the worry of capacitor, I can achive 20k shields with 220 shield regen/sec with 80-90% resists on the specific rats. This allows me to tank every mission without fail and the missile help a lot. The only problem to this is missile can get boring (not for me) and I use all tech II modules so it takes some skill. For Lvl 3 missions the Drake is the perfect ship, but if you plan to use it for Lvl 4 missions, then you will need good missile skills or else you wont do enought dmg and it takes WAY to long.
Drake Setup: 6x Heavy Launcher (7x if you have the skills) 1x Tractor Beam
2x Shield Resits Amplifiers II 3x Shield Extenger II 1x Shield Recharger II
4x Shield Power Relay II
Rigs: 1x Core Defence Field Purger I 2x Core Defence Field Extender I
This is again built for Lvl 4 missions, so dont think you need ALL tech II and the 3x Shield Extender IIs, try using 2 shield extenders 3 amps, and the 7 launchers, if you have the skills. Hope this helped.

I fly both and can say that the Drake will tank anything with a good passive setup. But, you are going to be doing the same as with the Caracal, shooting missiles from range. This isn't going to teach you anything you need later in Eve life for PVP. The Drake can be abused and dish out ok damage for ever. But most PVP battles last less then 30 seconds or so.
The Hurricane on the other hand is going to teach you to use gunnery skills, ranges, tanking and interacting with the game. In short it's more fun and you will learn along the way, just don't try taking it into most level 4 missions.
Don't get me wrong, I love my Drake as much as any ship, I just think the Hurrican is way more fun to fly for level 3 missions.

This same setup with T1 and second-best named handles any level 3 easily with mediocre skills.
The Hurricane is definitely funner to fly, but doesn't tank near as well even setup as a passive shield or armor tank simply because the Drake gets that 5% shield resists per level of BC.

In short: A drake will be the most efficient and worry-free battle cruiser you can possibly run missions in. The hurricane is more interesting to fly, more skill intensive, and expect to find lvl3's you cannot run in it, at least without very good skills. ----

You can if you are broke or masochist and have a lot SP .lvl 3s in cruiser will take a lot of time and 95% of lvl3 mission runners new players no huge SP or not much isk in wallet ,then BC is the way to go. I did lvl some 3s in caracal when i was broke missions were painy and slow,i can say BC is the way to go if you have isk and i would not try bloacade in a cruiser.

For that up close and personal feel, you can't go past a Myrmidon for level 3 missions. Afterburners, dive in, cut one out, blasters at point blank, repeat. Makes those standoff missile spam tactics look dull. Effective mind you, but dull. Armor and hull tanking frees up mid slots for cool toys like target painters too.

I've done all the level3s in an armor tanked hurricane. they're all trivial with the exception of AE and Blockade, which aren't hard - you just have to think a little and manage your distance from the rats a bit more. I've done it from 2Mil SP to my current 2.5Mil.
Rough setup: 5x650mm Scout Artys, 3xHeavy launchers, 10MN AB, 3xCap recharger IIs, Med Repper, anything from 2-4 active hardeners, maybe an EANM and/or DC depending on the situation and the rest Gyros. *ALL* the active mods in whatever combination i choose to use (even the AB) are able to perma-run and that's the key to the setup. Not to mention that none of this requires level 5 in any energy/tanky skill.
90% of the level 3s in this are trivial and I find myself going in with just the Med repper, 2 actives and 3 Gyrostabs most of the time. In fact, most missions don't even break shields.
You could of course do pretty much the same in a Drake as they're both more than adequate for level 3s, and i'm close to training for one as i write this (just for fun), but at my SP level the Hurricane pumps out more DPS. With the right skills and loadout, you can run level 4s in a drake - as some of my corpmates already do. They have poor DPS for 4s, but great survivability.

try a hurri,
sheild tank with ab n ac`s
or same but with armor, hell of a lot more fun than in a drake.
4 mids n 6 lows, guys, the hurri can passive tank as well you know, but some people think spaceships should move
both ships can tank, the hurri can sheild or armour tank (drake prob could but with 4 lows it wud be messy) as for dps the hurricanes the sure fire winner!! and 6 autocannons with rof bonus + rapid firing trained sounds downright lethal. rat a tat tat tat rat a tat like a minigun

Seriously... if you find missiles boring stick with drake but slap in 5 t2 light drones.
The added effort you'll need to do to micromanage them and keep them safe from warpins and new aggro will spice up your life.
At the end of the day the drake really is better at running missions.

I've used the Drake, Myrmidon and Hurricane for Level 3s. The Drake is clearly the most efficient level 3 mission runner, following by the Myrmidon. The Hurricane is very capable. If you want to specialize in Minmatar ships, the Hurricane is great. If you just want the best ship for level 3s (and a ship that can tank Level 4 missions as well), go for the Drake. ------------

All 4 tier 2 BC's can run lvl 3's. Harbinger is my favorite so far (have yet to try a Hurricane).

if you want the ability to get up and go to the washroom in the middle of the mission go with a drake with a passive shield tank setup otherwise fly whatever you find fun.

Edited by: Lavinrac Krad on 07/09/2007 11:04:53 Since we are comparing Drake verse Hurricane and some say a Hurricane ain't bad, how bout a Passive tanked Cane like this for missions:
High:
6 X 650 mm T2 2 X Assault Launchers T2
Mid:
3 X LSE T 2 1 X Dread/Caldari Invulnerability Field (What ever is cheaper)
Low 3 X SPR T2 3 X Gyrostabs T2
Rigs
3 Core Defense Purgers
I have a Minmatar alt and wonder if this would work well for mission running.

Edited by: Slugywug on 09/09/2007 14:48:49 The drake seems to be a great mission runner and certainly can do l4's once skills are decent, but if you want a change then you'll probably get the most from your current skills using a Cyclone, which has the bonus of being much cheaper.
Gyrostabilizer II Gyrostabilizer II Gyrostabilizer II Damage Control II
10MN Afterburner II Large Shield Booster II Invulnerability Field II (or rat specific ones) V-M15 Braced Multispectral Shield Matrix Medium Electrochemical Capacitor Booster I
650mm Artillery Cannon II 650mm Artillery Cannon II 650mm Artillery Cannon II 650mm Artillery Cannon II 650mm Artillery Cannon II 'Malkuth' Assault Missile Launcher I 'Malkuth' Assault Missile Launcher I 'Malkuth' Assault Missile Launcher I
With all l5 skills EFT gives 282 average dps permenantly tankable (with booster running), 381 done with t2 Hammerheads and Hobgoblins
The cap injector is for OMG moments - you'll probably hardly use it.
As you'll be using named t1 guns you should be able to fit arby assaults and maybe t2 hardeners - cpu tends to be the tight part of a Cyclone, although without awu you might have to drop to normal launchers.
If you are doing many missions against em/therm heavy rats then go with a 650 arty armour tanked cane.
