Best thread ever.
I know that lots of people wont believe a word thats being said by John Lear in that thread. But ive decided to post this anyway since its a absolute fascinating read.
There is no proof for anything he says, so if you are the kind of guy who wants NASA to tell you what is the truth, there is no need to go there.
For the rest, enjoy the 86 pages. Its hard to stop reading.
Edit: Its not only about aliens by the way.

Could you briefly summarise?
I don't think anyone has absolute proof. But if they did, how do you propose the information be suppressed for decades?

It's quite simple, you provide them with wine and circuses to take their minds off what is really going on.
It's obvious when a cover-up is going on, as the first thing that happens is.... hang on.... someone's at the door..... "Hello"..... "If that's Jehovah's Witnesses, I've told you not to call".... No use, I'll have to go see who it is..... *whack*,*crump*,*drag*

People believed the Earth was flat yes? Because the idea of a round earth was appalling. People believed the Earth was the center of the universe yes? Because the alternative was appalling.
Aliens and things are within the realm of possibility, and if nothing else are interesting food for thought. Id say that rather than just opposing something because youve been taught to think its stupid you should just look at evidence being reported and form some reasonable position based off of that, noting that reason doesnt have to and often doesnt anyway agree with popular opinion.
As to making people believe something that has no evidence, just give them some incentive, like "youle go to hell forever," and before you know it youle be the Catholic Church with millions of followers to boot.

This is very much how I like to think of it myself. I mean, take the UFO thing for example. How incredible would it not be if ALL of these sightings were made by people that wanted to hoax people? That, to me, is something much more unlikely than the existence of other races visiting earth. But my head is not filled with Drakes equation or stuff like that. I just look at what is happening. Its simple.
I dont expect the Average Joe to be more interested in UFO's than who wins this weeks American Idol, but I think a few people will get interested the more they hear about it.

There is a difference, though. Did you know, the ancient Greeks and Persians and Babylonians all knew the world was spherical? They did. There is even evidence that they'd worked out a rough idea of how big it was, calculated by celestial movements. The concept of a flat earth was largely adopted by the Catholic church, a body who routinely executed anyone who disagreed with them and generally suppressed scientific method.
Nothing similar can be said of aliens. NASA doesn't execute people who say aliens exist. Plenty of people set about SETI and UFO projects with scientific vim and vigour (as testament by the various links Jim has posted). And yet there is still no reliable evidence to say that there are flying saucers abducting hill billies. Theres a lot of speculation, and a lot of hoaxes, and it's almost always coupled with genuinely mad ideas detracting from what scientific merit there is ("as you can see from this telescopic imagery, we can clearly see an alien moon base, and THE FBI ARE STEALING OUR SOULS!")
I've always been open minded about aliens. I've always been obsessed with space and space travel and aliens, and always taken interest in genuine scientific advancement in the area. But being sceptical is healthy, and unfortunately for every 1 good idea in the field there are 200 crazy ones drowning it out.
It is not healthy, sensible, or reasonable to believe every *****pot theory about UFOs just because you believe UFOs exist. Even if they did exist, almost all of these "experts" are nothing but charlatans or crazy. Believing every theory that supports your personal fantasies is no better than being close minded and believing nothing.
And before you say it, no I haven't read this link this time. I've got stuff to do today- maybe later ------

I managed to read until he wrote that the 18 different species of aliens all call us "containers" because of the souls locked up in our bodies.
Dear god how stupid do you have to be! First to believe in such a thing as a soul and secondly , if you do have to believe in souls, think so much of yourself as to be the only species to have souls.
Jezus this really blows my mind. Humans aren't the center of the universe ffs.
Edit: hahaha I just kept reading and now i've come to this part where theres an alien species to gruesome that you'll die of a hearth attack just by looking at it.
I seem to remember a southpark episode with the Mexican Staring Frog of southern Shri Lanka that had the same idea

Iv read it all and its very interesting. However you cannot prove or disprove anything Lear said. I definetly believe there is some inteligent life out there, theres thousands of abduction/ufo sightings on file for gods sake. (not the "oh my god, its a shiny light in the sky" thing but testimonys from POLICE men, militery men and commercial jet pilets seeing somthing up close and personal.) I definetly think there isnt nearly as much attention being give the these accounts from regular people, and theyr increasing. Society just doesnt wnat to touch that area and thats just sad. However what John Lear said cannot be deamed as credible. Its definetly a riviting story but it just might as well be some bored guy looking for kicks and giggles. Who knows? Pay attention to the credible people, the thousands of eye wittnesses that have been ignored and ridiculed just because they saw something amazing one night and had the guts to report it.

Some of it may be true, some of it may be false, but its all interesting.

So instead of having a government agency tell us what to think, we'll have John Lear telling us what to do.
NASA has bureaucratic problems, but they also employ many competent scientists. Because of that, they're generally correct on scientific matters, but management is too incompetent to hold any sort of conspiracy.
