Avoiding bad place application
One the one hand I can see what the advocates are complaining about, on the other hand, having driven a cab in crappy parts of a medium city, there ARE people who are for the most part a real world example of a lowsec gate camper with "nothing better to do".

I wonder if it takes time of day into consideration. I wouldn't want to be in the area of MLK's tomb at night, but during the day, especially on a Sunday given how many chruches are nearby, the area would be safe. (Never mind that there's a Park Ranger patrol car in the area.)
You can tell me what is and isn't true when you pry the tinfoil from my cold, lifeless head.

A lot of bad neighborhoods - notoriously bad ones - are NOT as bad as people think they are.
And of course, lowsec is not as bad either.
I see a lot of parallels now between the high-low-null concerns in this game and how people in RL handle high crime districts.
My cousin was a cop in what is known as "Fort Apache" - which is the South Bronx in New York City. One of the worst places to be. A friend of mine worked there for years with a construction company. Risk? Yes. But, as we are aware of: only if you are stupid.
Harlem, another part of NYC that is notoriously bad, does not in fact have swarms of black kids attacking and killing whitey on site.
But then, neither does the south have that with colors in reverse. In fact when this catholic from New York with ancestry out of SOUTH Europe moved south for 9 years, the people who were the nicest and most helpful to me were the so-called "Rednecks" who everybody says are a bunch of sheet-wearing bible-thumping racists with a penchant for dragging people to death behind pickup trucks.
But when it does happen - the media makes it look like it's the norm.
My point is it's amazing what perceptions we see versus reality in this game and how it's really carried over from RL.

if they take it based on crime rates in a given neighborhood then good for them. i would want something like that in my gps, even though half the city i live near would be basically nullsec.

I think it all depends on the time of day and what city it is. Time of day plays a big factor...huge factor in how bad a neighborhood is. Generally speaking you're pretty good if it's daytime, but after say 10pm and you're sitting in the middle (of the now gone) projects in Chicago, you're going to not be so lucky. http://youtu.be/yytbDZrw1jc |
