It is not difficult to mix training learnings up with training skills you will actually use to have "fun" with.
yes, i vote for more learning skills!

Edited by: Altmar on 05/11/2007 21:50:49 I've recently returned to Eve and being the Skill points I wanted for a PvP character(my goal is PvP) were easier to get from a new character then retrain my more hodge podge industrial based character I rerolled. My wife also just started playing so this is an area we are dealing with now.
We have been following this approach to training our skills.
We pick a basic frigate load out that we want to use short term. For instance Mimitar and the Rifter frigate. We determine what skills we need for this load out (choosing basic load out, not T2 mods). Then we have a short term goal. This requires a bit of research on the forums if you are smart enough to save yourself the headache of learning it first hand. While researching this, we are training our basic learning skills to the first level at least (many times you don't have all the basics). then we choose the skills that would be quick, say I need hull upgrades 1 to fit armor plate, or Repair systems to fit the armor repairer.
The overall goal is to train the quick short term stuff while your playing, and then the longer skills while your off. For example the 3rd level of Learning takes between 8 and 9 hours usually. And same for other learning. once your done playing for the night/day start the long one. It will also alow you to possibly start another skill before your off to work to get you through your work day (depending when you log off/get up). Ths ensures that you always have a skill training. Once I got the reqs for basic load out of my frig I start going all out for learning skills.
This is just the way I do it, allows for decent game play. Most basic frigat load outs can be trained up within a day or two doing this. You get a T1 fitted ship with mods and also rank 3 learning skills normally by the time your done training your basic ship fitting. You can then go to training the longer level 4's and 5's.

I maxed my learning skills all to lvl 5 even the advanced ones inb my first year of play.
I do not regret it almost 3 years later.
I reach my goals a hell'uva alot faster now.

Edited by: Garborg on 06/11/2007 19:13:18 I decided Level 4 on basics and Level 3 on basic was all I could handle while still giving me an edge in a couple months.
Skipped all the CHA ones until I decide I need to go for social skills later on.

I'm keeping the higher-level learning skills for when I won't have access to EVE or I have to start studying like crazy for my exams, which means I won't be able to play anyway.

I agree completely. Balance things, have fun. Train learning when your training goals are far enough out that the learning skills will get you there faster.

I never maxed my learning. I still have Learning 3 and no plans to train further. The way I justified this was I dont play enough to care. If it takes me an extra day or two or three, whatever.
I just play to have fun. I think the whole sp thing is overrated. Guess it depends on how you view EVE. Job or casual fun?

I currently have 5.2 million SP with Learning level 5 and all the other learning skills to level 4 which is about 1.1 million, also have Cybernetics to level 4. I train theses learning skills inbetween other skills I want because hardcore training learning skills all at once would make me quit the game from boredom.
I have reached the point where getting the last 3 points to all atributes (+1 from rank 1 learnings (5 days each), +1 from rank 3 learnings (10-15 days each) and +1 from Cybernetics level 5 (15 days) ) is going to be painfully boring to say the least.
But I will still do it lol as I plan to play the game for a long time, but it wont be all at once it will be inbetween other skills.

I've been playing for 3-4 months now. The first thing I did was max all of my learning skills except presence(its lv4). If I make a new character I'd do the same thing. I did take tangents to other skills when the isk gain was big enough but now that I'm done with the learning skills I'm glad I did it. Plus it would bug me if I was training skills slower then I knew I could.
I vote for more learning skills I'll max them too.
To new players the one thing I would change is training salvaging skills early. I waited untill I was doing lv3 missions before I was able to salvage. Salvage makes you lots of money.

I have to admit this topic puzzles me. From my experience, it's generally wise to level skills 1-2-3 while you play, and put the long-running 3-4-5 skills on when you leave. Obviously a general rule with exceptions, but it's a decent rule.
Applying that rule to the newbie, just level a bunch of skills while you play and put the long-running learning skills on during the off-hours. You won't bethat far behind, and you'll have fun.
