Edited by: Joshua Calvert on 13/02/2004 20:22:58 Hold up, hold up, this isn't an accusation.
This isn't a discussion about whether they are or are not pirates.
Have SA/CFS/FA/any other person ever given thought that the reason behind CA's ascendancy and rise in power is directly related to the accusations of piracy rightly/wrongly laid at their feet?
If you're a new player and you want to do PVP, what is the most romantic and exciting way of playing the game? Piracy.
If you're a mid-term player who has become a little bit bored of mining/shooting NPC's, what is the natural progression of your gaming experience? Piracy.
Therefore, due to the reasons above, their ranks have swelled and they can now field a combat force sufficient to combat any other alliance while maintaining empire/0,0 mining/npc farming operations. All at the same time.
Discuss.

Frankly, "pirate" is not a useful term any more, since almost everybody defines it as "someone who kills me."
Far as I'm concerned, a pirate tries to extort money on pain of death: a killer, just kills me. On that basis I don't think anyone would accuse CA of piracy; just of killing

Only according to your definition of piracy. Which is near enough the same as mine; but there's plenty of others in use.

I did say this was not about whether you are or aren't pirates.
It's about whether the perceived ideas of players give them a natural predilection towards one side or another.

Well quite true.
In that case - if you call blood thirsty, ebil doing, PVP Junkies pirates - then slap me a pirate(edit: er... make that parrot - blame it on the beer *AGAIN*) on me shoulder and hear me say "HAARRRRRRRRRRRR". Reverend Necrona |

I've drank too much beer then.
I'd say that Xanadu's fantastic PR way back many people still start with ammonosity when it comes to the CA.
It was very good PR, but then again Xanadu had the best training in PR wars - hello planetarion. :) Reverend Necrona |

Exactly, Necrona.
Perhaps the reason CA got so big and strong was the fact people just love being the bad guy and all the hard work of SA/FA to make you out as bad guys only helped you in the long run.

ROFL. Never really thought of that. You may be right. Not that SA/FA were ever the good guys of course. I don't think any of us are.

Hmm. I understand your point. I believe the the word "piracy" is over used, and used by people that have no idea the true meaning of a "pirate".
My opinion of what a means pirate: Empire Space Gate Camper, that makes a living off of others.
You can't really call an alliance or a player "pirate" unless they fit the above description.
Join an Alliance to fight large scale battles (fleet battles).
If you wanna pirate you are better off in a smaller group, camping gates.

Perhaps yea - remind me to thank [Xan]niwaie and [Xan]hir0 sometime hehe :).
I still think there is a large opposition to the 'Dark Force'. Despite Stain being on the Backfoot, Evolution and FA are only occupied at the momment, in the long run they still oppose our ways and with the FA getting more and more PvP experience things are going to get very interesting :).

More likely the name of the region and its vast resources, it doesn't hurt their influx of applications that they remain untouched by pirates though.

Edited by: TIvian on 13/02/2004 23:36:31 Nice topic Josh, IMO, when I first joined the game I had a set idea as to what piracy is. You gank indies for loot. you take ships from pilots. and you take money for payment of ransom.
But in life we all know the mob rules. and if everyone considers CA pirates then no matter what we say or do we will be pirates.
I don't believe we are pirates not because of my own beliefs but because in reality we have only attacked those that have shown open hostility to us or who have declaired war on CA.
Sorsha Lightbringer says that all alliances are pirates. and that may be the oppinion of every one in empire space. I used to believe that as well. but for any one fighting pvp its the only place to do it safe with out having to declair corp war and not take the sec rating hit. I personally love the pvp aspect of the game.
I have enjoyed going up against Evol and SA and FA Zombie and SMUG and CFS in the first war. and I thank you all for a great time(and as a personal side note I am forced in my RL to be nice ALL The time due to my job, its nice to be hated and called the biggest trash talker-but I really dont think ill of any one in game. its all character based. so if any of you have taken any thing from here to RL that I have said. let it go and I am sorry.)
Now in closeing I can say that if I am a pirate. I sure as heck must be the worst pirate in game.....I am not rich nor do I have any of the perks of the pirate life. I am one poor son of a b!tch!!!
Remember....its all perception! we see things different then those of the rest of the community.

With so many wars going on, when I decided to join Black Omega Security one of the deciding factors for me was that by entering into a CA corp there would be no shortage of PVP oportunities.
So in my case, yes the rep helped move me toward CA. Now as to wether or not I help make CA stronger?

Piracy is any situatuion you exort isk from the teletubbie against his reflected will. That's ransoming him, steal his corps assets, blow him away and take his modules or form an alliance that demands 1 million isk per day, just for access.

If your bored of PvE, yes PvP is a natural step. But you draw no distinction between PvP and piracy Josh. Pirating involving attacking for the sole reason of profit - or boredom/fun. PvP also includes personal vendettas, competition for resources, political gains, reputation, role playing reasons, and im sure many of you could provide more reasons.
To me the numbers a corp has is irrelevent. Its a question of quantity vs quality. Attracting large numbers of players may be impressive, but players who seek a true challenge and roleplaying experience will find the 'good' path far more rewarding. ...I want loyal soldiers for our wars - not corp-shifters and vagabonds. -------

Nego, you simply don't know what you're talking about. I take isk against other peoples will and put them into my own wallet. That's parasitical behaviour at bare minimum.
Now go and cry a river to Stav since 98.98652% don't think that m0o corp is sooo uber cool as you think it is.

And now im forced to point out there is a difference between a war and piracy. A war for profit is one thing. Piracy for profit is yet another. Note that I havent called the CA pirates. People who know you far better than I have though. then again, the same has been said of all alliances. -------

Never said u did call us pirates.
What i mean is in terms of eve war. Most of them are started as a cover mostly for piracy, well piracy in the sense of PvP. The ability to attack and pillage people. To have the thrill of hunting and being hunted.
I admit that i didn't really explain that too well - sorry. :) Reverend Necrona |
