Those screenshots on the site look freaking amazing. I knew I couldn't get those graphics running just an ATI Radeon X300. However I just upgraded to a Nvidia 7900GT and aside from being able to run 8X AA and 16X AF the graphics are the same. You can easily tell those screenshots are not the current game. The current game uses 24bit colors and you notice it, the screenshots are obviously 32bit. Are those DX10 shots or something of the upcoming version?

Try 24 bit with 8 bit alpha and uncheck the lod and dither box.. That will get you 32 bit color and every model in your view will render instead of dissapearing into a little white dot at a distance.. Though I bet it will chug along even with your 7900 if your anywere with lots of ships and objects.. Trinity 2 will fix this..

There are moments when you can get those awesome screenies ingame, however when battling one kinda hopes that all the fancy stuff (stars, planets, nebulae) wouldn't be there since they hinder the playability quite a lot in the craze of a fight. -

I beleive the current graphics engine doesnt use the graphics processor at all. Its all on your CPU. Upping the graphics card would of had little effect.
Dont worry though the next engine will fully support the graphics card, run much better and look brill

Wrong, the game actually uses your GFX card in addition to your CPU...

Dammit, I have to say that although the ships in general look great, much better, I actually think the new Vexor is a step backwards overall (I mean art design wise, apart from the greater detail, which in itself is great).
I would rather they had kept the "inlaid brass Art Deco" effect, but just given the ship more detail. The sort of "inlaid brasswork" effect gave it a rather classy, artistic look I thought. Now it just looks "generic industrial", albeit with great detail. *sigh*

The amount of GPU usage on the current client is minimal. According to the software i use to monitor cpu/gpu usage on 3dmax and Unreal Engine the current eve client uses less that 20% of my video cards potential. Almost all processing is done on CPU and most of the GPU functions seem to be DMA access (probably for textures) and the cards video memory (probably for textures).
Take into consideration this software isnt made for monitoring eve, at say a 20% +/- differencial, its still less than %50 GPU....

Add "advancedDevice=1" to prefs.ini
Turns on the anti-aliasing which is off by default.
Ctrl+F9 removes the UI, always looks nice when u do that.
The game is 4 years old, what do u expect? a gfx update? not gonna happen... erm

The EVE client does use a small amount of your GPU, however the amount it uses is limited to simply a framebuffer. There is no T&L support built into the current graphics engine, nor are there any smartmodel commands being sent to your graphics card. In short, all the "snazzy" graphics features of the client are handled entirely in CPU.
The current graphics engine is actually designed and compatible with dx8 rather than anything newer. The reason it "requires" [read: pseudo-requires] DX9 is because Microsoft has stopped supporting older versions of DirectX. If you play the game on a GeForce 3 card, such as a Ti4200 or something similar without DX9 support, the game will infact play perfectly and look the same as with new DX9 graphics cards.
The new graphics engine, TrinityII, fixes a lot of this. It supports DX9 with SmartModel 3 and allows a lot of the T&L and rendering functionality to be pushed off to the graphics card.
Also, the current graphics engine CAN support multisampling. As someone mentioned, you are able to set the "advanceDevice" parameter in the prefs.ini file and enable these functions. It improves some of the textures, especially those with hard edges.

Bit more than framebuffer. Drawing the polygons and texturing them is ofc done by the graphic cards.
Quote: To be able to run EVE, the graphic card is required to offer hardware Transform and Lighting (T&L)support and 32MB RAM, additionally you will need to have DirectX 9.0c installed.
Taken from the eve-site, which suggest that the lighting is done already by the graphics card at the moment.
Just doesn't use any vertex/pixel shaders and all the other improvements that came with Directx 9.0 I think. Dunno what they were, maybe new vertex-arrays, compressed textures and all that stuff that speeds up the graphics ?

Well, don't you sound like a fool? 32 bit colour is nothing more than 24-bit true colour with an alpha channel tacked on. You can clearly see it's 32-bit and not 24, eh? Haha.

No, Eve currently uses DirectX. And DirectX automatically uses your graphics card to its fullest if you have one.
