It is clear that there is a traffic control system in EVE.
I often get messages saying a certain gate is closed due to congestion, and when entering a system after downtime, I often get a message that I need to try again in a few moments.
There should also be a traffic control system that prevents too many people from entering a system, and I can't see why it would be so difficult to implement, or why people should really object.
For example, why not set a limit of 400 people in a system?
And/or, set a congestion charge on anyone entering a system with 200 or more people in it.
And/or, apply a residency tax on anyone who stays more than 40 hours a month in a heavily congested system.
(This residency tax could be 1% of your current worth for each hour over the 40 per month.)
Also, why not add an autopilot option to avoid heavily congested systems?
I admit there might be a problem if several adjacent systems are maxed out.
e.g. if Jita has 400 people, and each adjacent system has 400 people, no-one will be able to leave Jita.
But this could be solved by setting systems surrounding Jita (or other maxed systems) to have different entrance limits.
e.g. stop Perimeter from taking new people from other systems, except Jita, when the number of people in Perimeter reaches 200 (leaving room for 200 people from Jita to leave). Or something like that.
I don't see anything wrong about these options (i.e. they don't hurt the spirit of EVE), nor should they be very difficult to implement.
Discuss.

how about you read the devblogs and player news before making 'serious' suggestions. CCP is looking into infiniband and other solutions which will make running jita on multiple cpu cores possible, hopefully bringing a fix and raising the upper level player cap without lag. ----------------------------------------------- "post with your main. delete your alt, you sad little exploiting metagamer."

I am fully aware of these plans, but I still don't see what would be wrong with my suggestions.
Eventually even the infiniband systems would be maxed out sooner rather than later (bandwidth has a habit of being filled quickly if it is abundant).
Ditto multiple cpu cores.

Dude with the supposed new tech CCP could add endless CPU cores to jita. we could have 35K PCU ALL IN JITA, potentially.
Your suggestions seem fine though, but I think we should try the hardware suggestion first, see if we cant fix it in the spirit of truly one world online where everyone can choose to sit in jita if they want. lets hope the new tech also makes fleetwar something other than 'a still life portrait of ships blowing up' ----------------------------------------------- "post with your main. delete your alt, you sad little exploiting metagamer."

I hear you.
The problem is, from economic considerations, such scaling is massively expensive, and neverending.
CCP could in principle install a massively parallel supercomputer, and it would handle the Jita problem easily.
But, the cost to CCP would be very high, and eventually they would still need to upgrade it further.
These suggestions could lower the need to endlessly update the hardware.
Also, if we find that the servers can handle 400 people easily, then the limits could be adjusted later to 2000, or whatever does cause lag.
Anyway, these are just some ideas, and I hope they help.

So you would want defending alliances just park 400 alts in a system able of locking the system fully down instead of allowing a lagfested battle?
Yea I'm sure that that will do PvP lots of good.

That is one reason I suggest adding a congestion charge and residency tax.

Jita isn't an issue really. Just don't go there for anything else than shopping or selling, then just jet out

Agreed - CCP should not be making changes to game mechanics to correct player created, single system problems. The answer to Jita is simple - if the costs of doing business there, including lost time, annoyance etc are too great then don't go there, don't ask for game changes.

Edited by: Lilian Long on 18/09/2007 09:45:10 If they come up with a multiple-nodes per system idea, it should be able to add/remove nodes to/from a system on the fly depending on the load. So there wouldn't be dedicated nodes to handle Jita anymore. Processing power would automatically go, where it is needed the most.
Think the only big technical problem, where they could reach limits with that approach, is splitting people onto different nodes, who are on the same grid. In a huge battle on the same grid handled by several nodes, there would be a lot of communication needed between those nodes. But if the communication overhead between two CPUs is bigger than letting 1 CPU compute everything on its own, then adding the second CPU was just useless in the first place. Makes no sense to double the processing power by adding more CPUs, if the CPUs are just waiting most of the time to receive eachothers results. Will be interesting to see, if infiniband offers enough speed for that or not.

CCP needs to "spin off" Jita into it's own separate MMO.

Jita's sec rating should drop to 0.4 every week, once for 2 hours. Randomly.
