Edited by: Jorj Mckie on 18/09/2007 20:35:19 so interceptors are like frigates, but much much faster and actually much much "smaller" because of the tiny signature radius. i can see how they can survive for very long in pvp encounters because of their speed and size, but i just cannot comprehend how people claim to kill cruisers and even battleships! () in an interceptor!
where in the world do they get that much firepower? they can only fit what, 2.. maybe 3 turrets/launchers and those are small size, intended for small targets. how is it possible that it can go through a battleship's tank that is intended to withstand damage from multiple other battleships? this just makes ABSOLUTELY no sense whatsoever! sure the battleship won't be able to kill the interceptor, but the interceptor shouldn't be able to even dent the battleship either!
and whats even more confusing is that when i hear storys of interceptors warping onto a belt, locking down some cruiser, and then "quickly" killing it while his buddies warp in... i mean, same argument here. what "quickly"? how is it possible that a ship with the firepower of a frigate is going through a cruiser-sized tank "quickly"?
am i missing something here, or are people just super-exaggerating?

You're missing the fact that not all cruiser/battleship pilots have a single clue how to fit their ships. As such, an interceptor would chew through a civilian fit mining battleship with no worries.

Some Interceptors do in fact have some pretty good damage potential.
But what you are really missing here is the situation those kills are made in.
The Battleship kills are often made because either the person flying the Battleship has it unfitted, fitted badly, or just has really poor skills and can't keep their tank running. The Interceptor would likely be being flown by someone with very good skills so that their damage potential is quite high. This means that, eventually, the Battleship will die.
Of course, a well fitted and flown Battleship won't have any problem with a single Interceptor.
The same applies to the Cruiser in the belt, except that it may also have NPCs shooting at it, which increases the damage.

so it all comes down to chance, and its most likely that random ratting cruisers in belts are all newbs?

That would probably be the case, yes.
But like I said. Interceptors do have the ability to put out a lot of damage. It just takes a well skilled pilot to do so. That damage can be plenty enough to get through a weaker BS tank, and will easily rip through most cruiser tanks.

In essence it depends on skill levels of both players and setups. The interceptor will just slowly bleed the bs to death if the bs doesn't have enough cap to repair damage received. Most cruisers, bc, and bs that die to interceptors simply belong to noobs, not newbies, but noobs who forgot that they have to have a defense against smaller ships. A web and/or pack of light T2 drones disposes of inties quite nicely.

Edited by: Sakura Nihil on 18/09/2007 21:48:52 A swarm of Crows is quite the sight against a battleship. Might only do 60 DPS or so a piece, but say ten of them outputs as much damage as a Thorax or two without the ability to be killed if they're flown right and the BS doesn't have anti-frigate support.
In short? Its a wolfpack - individually they may be fast and weak, but together they are strong.

Once I was flying my Geddon from Empire to deep 0.0 and ran across 2 ceptors. I warped to the wrong BM, so I wasn't able to jump immediately. They would have killed me had I not had a bunch of stabs fitted which allowed me to warp off to the first gate. I was amazed how quickly my limited tank (remember, travel fitting), melted before I got away.
So if they know what they're doing, it's not that hard to take out an undefended BS with only 2.
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.

Did you ever see The Princess Bride, where the giant is explaining why the Dread Pirate Roberts was able to defeat him? It's kinda like that.
Battleships are often not fitted out to fight frigates; they're used, for example, in mining setups, in sniper setups, etc. and often fitted to engage other large warships. A small frigate speeding around at point-blank range with a high transversal velocity can be simply impossible for a Battleship to hit. If the frigate is scrambling and webbing the battleship so it cannot disengage, then the Battleship is stuck there to take whatever the frigate can dish out. All the frigate needs to do then is dish out more damage than the battleship can tank, whether through DPS or cap draining or some combination of the two.
(Pirates of yore would often sail in small sloops that could get in close enough to be "under the guns" of the larger merchants or warships they engaged.)
Such frigates fear battleships with huge tanks, missiles or rockets, and especially speedy drones.

You can probably add energy neutralizers to that list - battleships don't generally tend to carry them, but I'd imagine a single cycle from a heavy neut would completely drain and inty's cap and make it unable to engage it's MWD, which would be very very bad. After the NOS nerf, we might see a few more neuts about the place too...

The big problem is that the cycles of the neutralizer and the warp scram or whatever won't line up. In other words, you drain the cap of the inty, and in a second or two he gets a bit of cap again - just as his scrambler cycles. So it doesn't get shut off! :(

Yeah...he may be able to engage his scrammer, but he won't have an mwd anymore...and that generally leads to near insta poppage

Inties may sound all like wtfpwnships now, but remember that they're really really dificult to fly and require alot of real life skills to fly properly. They're extremely unforgiveable and one single mistake gets you killed very very quickly.
You have to react very quickly and it can be quite a pain to take notice of every little thing. I've lost 2 crows because I wasn't paying attention...

I have little to add except that your character name is made of win. I wish I'd thought of it.
Maybe I'll have to make an Amarr character and name him Bildoon. ;)

lol. It'd be hard to make anything resembling a Laclac or a Wreave, but Pan Spechi should be fairly easy.
Or maybe a Gallente named Raja Flattery... ;)
Always fun to see someone else who's read his more obscure stuff.

So true, a sense of transversal velocity and the ability to fly inties manually are critical to being successful.

And Sakura sure knows what she's talking about with those Inties....much to my dismay. Still muttering over the lost ship, but I can appreciate the tactics used. _______________________________

Just to put my two cents in, since some people have made similar posts without mentioning this specifically: PvP setups and PvE setups can be VERY different. For PvE I don't typically use any tank at all; just big guns and field stabs or gyrostabs depending on the ship, and a speed boost. Even though it's never failed me in PvE, with this type of fitting tradition I'd be screwed in PvP against pretty much anything, no matter what ship class I was in (unless the aggressing pilot had no clue what they were doing.)
