I'm very new to eve but loving it, my eventual aim at the moment is to fly bigger and bigger ships until eventually (with a lot of luck and hard work) I can fly the biggest...
I was just wondering whether (and how soon) I should start training skills in other race's ship types (I'm currently caldari)?
If someone could give some advice in terms of me wanting to fly bigger ships (I'm currently on cruiser) but also just in general, I mean should I just concentrate on caldari ships or is it worth the time and effort to 'multi-class'.
And if I were to 'multi-class' what would be the best race to combine with caldari (in terms of the fact that I've been training up my missile skills to fly the caracal)?
I've only been playing 10 days so I haven't really invested major time in any directions so I really don't mind re-directing my skills...
Hope that wasn't too confusing and thanks in advance for the help,

You can train in any race ship you want, there is no limitation or penalty.
Once you have spent months training a race's ships though, you might find that re-doing it all over with another race will be a pain.

Remember that flying a ship is more then just getting the appropriate spaceship command skill up. You have to train all of the support skills and gunnery skills and navigation skills, etc, in order to fly it well. If you don't have those things trained then you're nothing more then a VERY expensive brick in space. That being said, it would take you something along the lines of 6 months to "properly" train for 1 races BSes. You then have to plan out the bigger ships from there. It's no minial task.
Google EVEMon and use that program to get an idea of how long it will take you to train for a ship that you want to use. Don't forget to include all of those support (electronics, electronics upgrades, mechanics, engineering, etc), gunnery (specific weapons and weapons/advanced weapons upgrades) and navigations (don't forget jumpdrive operation and the likes if looking a tcapital ships) skills!
It's good to have a long term plan, but don't forget about what you're going to be doing until you reach that goal. If you get tunnel vision and get bored and quit before then, it's just a waste of time.

Edited by: DubanFP on 20/09/2007 02:41:07 The biggest ships in EVE are the titans. Good luck considering they were released almost 2 years ago and there's only about 10 in all of EVE.
If you want a realistic goal go for a battleship. Maybe if you're still around 2-3 years from now you'll be able to get a carrier/dreadnought. ___________

As far as what synergy there is in training when looking at multiple races, I think there are two areas you need to think about: weapons and tank.
For instance, Caldari and Gallente share an emphasis on hybrid weapons; some Gallente ships support launchers and Caldari can always benifit from drones.
You can probably discover other synergies with Amarr and Minmatar as well.
Since there are examples of each ship class within each race's ship list, you really need to decide how you want to contribute to the mayhem which is EVE and select the ships that fit your style.

Caldari shield tanking overlaps best with Minmatar who have enough mid slots to afford a shield tank. Some Gallente ships also can be shield tanked. But for pvp people prefer armor tanking. Amarr are definite armor tankers - they lack mids to do anything about shields.
With weapons Caldari overlap best with Gallente, no question about it. They use same hybrid weapons and missile skills come handy on many Gallente ships. So overall I think Gallente would be closest match to Caldari.
Saying that, if you choose to cross train you'll be putting a lot of skill points into Ship Command skills that could have gone into support skills. It is entirely up to you. Some people like variety. Others like to train for one thing but be very strong in it. Gallente/Minmatar are nice for PVP while Caldari are nice for PVE (mission running, making iskies) so I think one would complement the other very nicely if you're in for varriety.

Edited by: Baka Lakadaka on 20/09/2007 03:57:13 There's 2 potential strategies here.
I have one character who only flies Gallente and can fly Industrials, Battleships, Transports and elite frigates. This character is about to start training elite cruisers.
I've got another character who only flies elite frigates, but is cross training to other races. Assualt Ships, Covert Ops, etc are cross-race skills and you only need the appropriate racial frigate skills to fly the different race's elite frigates (and destroyers).
You can't get it all right away, so take some time to consider what you want. In the meantime, study up on the support skills needed to fly any ship well - i.e. electronics, engineering, mechanic and navigation.
Cheers Baka ______________________ Have a Skill in training every second of every day and never buy a ship you can't afford to replace at least once. |

Also, remember that the difference between an acceptable level in a ship and a fully pimped out ship with tech 2 everything might not be that big a difference for your training times. Often, if you've got the cash, you can put together a ship only 10% or so worse than said omfgbbq skilled up pilot but needing half to 1/3 of the training time. If you have a strong desire to cross class- feel free to, yes you'd be more powerful in the end specialising in one race, but it doesn't mean squat if you get bored and quit the game

If you want to fly a very LARGE vessel get a Charon. If you want to fly the largest BS in the game go for a Hyperion. Ultimately the Leviathan is one BIG SCARY Titan so that is a great goal.
I would say if you really "WANT" to trian other race's ships (like if you don't want to suck at PvP until you get a Levaithan) then go for Minmatar. They can use missiles pretty good and are a lot of fun to fly and rather deadly but start soon because it takes a lot of time to learn ships and everything that goes with them to make them good.

Thanks guys! A lot of great advice there, I think I'm gonna train up my support skills so I can fly my cruiser a bit better and then decide whether to go down the line of diversity or specialisation. But I've bookmarked this thread so when I do I'll be reading all your advice over again.
Thanks! You guys and gals are great!
